Characters

Mona Lisa
  • Oil on cottonwood
  • One of the most famous paintings of all times is a mystery. It is uncertain whether the painting is a portrait of the wife of the Florentine citizen Francesco del Giocondo as traditionally believed, while Mona Lisa’s enigmatic smile remains a subject of speculation.
  • The painting can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris , France .

The last supper
  • Tempera on gesso, pitch and mastic.
  • The mural represents Jesus and the twelve disciples when Jesus says that one of them would betray him. The painting which covers a wall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy , is mainly a later reconstruction because much of it deteriorated relatively soon as a result of Leonardo’s experimentation with tempera and oil on dry wall.

The drawing which depicts a man in two superimposed positions within a square and circle is named after the architect Vitruvius because it is accompanied by a text which is based on the architect’s work . The Vitruvian Man is held by the Gallerie dell ’Academia in Venice,

The Renaissance

German instead of Latin so that people could understand them better. Many other Christians agreed that the church was in need of change. Luther and others founded new religions and split away from the Roman Catholic church. Although changes took place everywhere in Europe, Florence was the centre of the Renaissance. Fifteenth century Florence was an exciting place to be. At that time the city was independent and had a population of about 60,000 . Leonardo da Vinci (1452--1519) was one of the most famous people of the Renaissance period. He was not only a famous painter but also studied science, designed machines and drew plans for new inventions. Young Leonardo grew up near Florence and studied painting with the great painters of the city. Kubism

KUBISM Kubism on 20. sajandi kunstivool, mis hakkas kujunema Pariisis 1907. aastal Pablo Picasso ja Georges Braque'i töödes. Kubistide eelkäijaks oli Paul Cézanne. Mõiste "kubism" võttis kasutusele prantsuse kriitik Louis Vauxcelles ja see vihjab kuubist lähtuvale kujutamisele. Kriitik kirjeldas Braque'i töid 1908. aastal väljendiga bizarreries cubiques (kuubilised veidrused). Teine, hilisem vool kubismis, kannab nime s

American Art Revision Materials

American Art Revision Materials Colonial Period Portraiture. The first typically American paintings were illustrated maps but painting remained scarce during C17. There were 4 reasons: settlers came from backgrounds where art was unusual, Protestant attitudes was averse to imagery and painting, the English were not yet distinguished in visual arts and religious art was non-existent. The colonial period is almost entirely limited to portraiture (deemed as `useful' by settlers). These first paintings were made by limners and artisans without formal training and were based on what was popular in England during the Tudors. The paintings are technically unskilled, strongly patterned, flat and linear. Spanish painting in America was mostly religious. In C18, painting was a luxury and necessitated wealth that had by then become available. Portraitures remained at the forefront because the rich could thusly display their status and because it was less "frivolous" than other forms of pain
