called "machinery." 5. The style of writing is elevated, even ceremonial. 6. Additional conventions: certainly all are not always present) 1. Opens by stating the theme of the epic. 2. Writer invokes a Muse, one of the nine daughters of Zeus. The poet prays to the muses to provide him with divine inspiration to tell the story of a great hero. 3. Narrative opens in media res. This means "in the middle of things," usually with the hero at his lowest point. Earlier portions of the story appear later as flashbacks. 4. Catalogs and geneaologies are given. These long lists of objects, places, and people place the finite action of the epic within a broader, universal context. Oftentimes, the poet is also paying homage to the ancestors of audience members. 5. Main characters give extended formal speeches. 6

and Myrtle. All the female characters were in their twenties but Jordan was the only one who still had not got married nor had a child. She had her own ideals and goals, and she stood for them without hesitation. However, by the end of the novel, she did get engaged, which can be seen from a conversation between Nick and Jordan as Nick says that "there were several she could have married at a nod of her head /.../" (Fitzgerald 1993: 160), which means that for a long time, Jordan chose not to marry, ignoring society's pressure and its prototypical image of the 1920s women. When it came to her personality, Jordan was portrayed to be quite arrogant and restless, and she somehow thought herself to be better than others, especially, when it concerned the people who lived in West Egg. For example, the first time she spoke to Nick "she remarked contemptuously, that he lived in West Egg" (Fitzgerald 1993: 27). West Egg

Writting a summary

’ This provocative statement opens the first chapter of „Europe. A journal for young people“. It is, of course, not true. As EU citizens, Europe is our home. It affects our lives in many areas. For example: money (euro is a common currency); flying has become much cheaper and safer; the police forces in the EU work closely together and European environmental protection lays down common standards. The second sections provides information about what does the European Union exactly means and when did 28 countries come all together. The third section gives a brief, simple explanation of how the most important EU institutions work. The European Union is a grouping of countries and their citizens. Both of these have a say in European matters. This happens through the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament. The Council of the European Union is the body representing the goverments of the EU countries. The

) is put into a wooden shallow bucket-like container and patted with water by one person while another person hits it with a large wooden mallet. Mashing the rice, it forms a sticky white dumpling. This is made before New Year's Day and eaten during the beginning of January. Mochi is made into a New Year's decoration called kagami mochi (?), formed from two round cakes of mochi with a bitter orange (, daidai?) placed on top. The name daidai is supposed to be auspicious since it means "several generations." Because of mochi's extremely sticky texture, there is usually a small number of choking deaths around New Year in Japan, particularly amongst the elderly. The death toll is reported in newspapers in the days after New Year Poetry The New Year traditions are also a part of Japanese poetry, including haiku and renga. All of the traditions above would be appropriate to include in haiku as kigo (season words). There

Microbial culture may also be used in the identification of viruses: the medium in this case being cells grown in culture that the virus can infect, and then alter or kill. In the case of viral identification, a region of dead cells results from viral growth, and is called a "plaque". Eukaryotic parasites may also be grown in culture as a means of identifying a particular agent. Microscopy Another principal tool in the diagnosis of infectious disease is microscopy. Virtually all of the culture techniques discussed above rely, at some point, on microscopic examination for definitive identification of the infectious agent. Microscopy may be carried out with simple instruments, such as the compound light microscope, or with instruments as complex as an electron microscope. Samples obtained from patients may

The negative side of the work might be the unconstat routine, but as i know, this might also be a plus side of this work, you will never know what will happen tomorrow or where will you go next week. When you have family and children, it is more difficult to go abroad for 5 years but you can bring your family with you to this country but when children are getting older then it is better to have stability in their lives. Diplomat has to work abroad, this means in another country and you will be away from your homeland. For me it's not so important how much you will make when you are a diplomat but for people who it is, i think the wages are around 30 000 krones plus the advantages you get for doing it. But i think if person decides that he wants to do it, then the money doesn't have so big role in it. Important is the cause. Media

Newspapers cover more stories than do any any of the other news media. Many millions of people watch television for amusement during their free time. But television provides viewers with more than just entertainment. Most people get a large proportion of their news from TV news broadcasts. So television is the chief source of news for many households around the world. TV does what none of the other media can: it brings the sights and sounds of some importnant news events by means of filmed, taped, or live reports. In addition to daily news reports, television covers special news events. Coverage of such an event may replace many hours of regular TV shows. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, Jr. KBE (April 16, 1889 December 25, 1977), better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an Academy Award-winning English comedy actor. Chaplin became one of the most famous actors as well as a notable director, composer and musician in the early to mid Hollywood cinema era

Unless your last name is Harryhausen, you shouldn't really maneuver Greek mythology, and you definitely don't need to use it as a source from some Shrek-inspired collection of tired pop culture riffs. Yet that's exactly what this Chris Columbus helmed half-success does. We begin by learning that the fabled gods of old do exist, and that Zeus is especially mad at brother Poseidon. Seems the head hocho's magical lightning bolt has been stolen, and each accuses the other of using the crime as a means of starting an all out Olympian war. Zeus specifically blames Poseidon's son, Percy Jackson, and soon, all the various creatures of myth - harpies, centaurs, minotaurs, and hydras -- are after the unsuspecting teen. When he learns of his lineage from his mother Sally, Percy teams up with half-man, half goat protector Grover, the battle skilled daughter of Athena, Annabeth and mentor Chiron to take on

Introduction to macroeconomics

economic environment changes, regardless of how well they are managed. Macroeconomics is relevant to voters who · wonder what their governments are up to · can also help governments avoid the worst economic crises Economic growth is one of the most exciting issues in macroeconomics. The list of reasons why economies grow: · population increase, since more people can produce more output. · accumulation of means of production: plant and equipment, roads, communication networks, and other forms of infrastructure make workers more productive. Most important is the development and harnessing of knowledge to economic ends. The most frequently used measure of a nation's economic well-being is its output and income, the gross domestic product (GDP). The monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country's borders in a specific time period,

I believe your advertisement was misleading in a number of ways. Firstly, the apartment was by no means spacious. The rooms were cramped and there was very little storage space. Also, the distance from the beach was in fact ten times farther than you claimed. Furthermore, the balcony railing was broken. This was quite dangerous and could have caused an accident. In addition, it overlooked an unattractive car park in contrast to the `great view' you advertised. Finally, the kitchen was poorly equipped and a lot of essential items were missing, such as plates and saucepans

Using Blogs as a Platform in the TEFL

it in your lessons. You firstly, need to consider the possibility (equipment, school funding, affordability for each student personally). Then you should test it yourself, then pay a considerable amount of time explaining and `guiding' the pupils to make them understand the goal you have in mind and then maintain the welcoming and safe environment throughout the whole blogging process. In other words it means that in order to provide the higher quality of students' reflections, teachers must always keep `an ear to the ground' and constantly take part in discussions, which means twice as more extra reading to do. However, in my view, such a work model has a huge potential especially for the ones who only start teaching (e.g. teaching assistants, young specialists) since I strongly believe that blogs provide an immediate and the least formalized form of feedback

solo travellers are more likely to be male, but female tourists are more likely to classify as a group travellers. There has been a low tide among tourists in Egypt. According to Mintel (2014), international tourist arrivals were affected by Arab Spring in 2011, when visitor numbers had dropped to 9.5 million arrivals. It recovered in 2012 to 11,2 millions, but dropped again in 2013 back to 9.5 millions. These figures show that the country is not stable for travelling, which in turn means that it is not a safe place for females to travel (females are seeking comfort and security, Mintel 2013). Therefore, if Egypt would like to (receive more tourists) generate more profit and tourist friendly profile, then local tourism agencies should promote and expand female friendly tourism idea in country. There are some solutions for cultural problems in female tourism. Cultural differences can cause

Car manufacturers have made their results out of that and are producing cars more environment-friendly. They are using car parts that can be recycled after their time when economic useful life has reached to an end. Also they have to take into account the pollution law; it means that their cars have to work more economically then they were before. Coca-Cola roll rahvusvahelises majanduspoliitikas

The biggest segment is North America, accounting for nearly 30% of revenue (World of Coca-Cola). Role in IPE Coca-Cola's role in international political economy is undoubtedly very great. There are not too many beverage companies that can compete with Coca-Cola and therefore it has the ruling position on international level of beverage companies. Coca-Cola company has a great power to change many factors that are important in the beverage industry. This means that in today's globalized world Coca-Cola has a lot of trailblazing work done and to do. For example the introduction of the new renewable and recyclable plastic bottle in 2009 which made many similar companies to follow the lead because the health of the planet is important to many people and therefore big companies have to be more planet friendly because otherwise many people would not buy their products and buy something more economically friendly, in this case Coca-Cola

Bullying

As many as students may stay home on any given day because they're afraid of being bullied. It downgrades students marks and makes an awful inside pain. What is more children who bully are more likely to get into fights, vandalize property, and drop out of school. If I see that someone is being bullied Im always going to try to stop it. Sometimes the best thing you can do for a person who is being bullied is just to be there for him or her and be a friend. Whether this means agreeing to walk home with him or her after school, sitting with him or her on the bus or at lunch, trying to include him or her in your school or social activities, or just spending some time with him or her and trying to understand what he or she is going through. I know what feeling you have when someones is calling you with nasty names or talking rubbish about your parents. It will make such an anger inside you that you really want to kill that person who is bullying you.

Canada´s history

Canada's History North America was first settled by people who came from the northern and eastern parts of Asia about 15,000 years ago. They crossed the Bering Strait from Siberia to Alaska. Some of those people followed the Yukon River and found their way south. Others followed the MacKenzie River which opened the way to the plains of the interior, and then travelled on to the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. The third group of people inhabited the Arctic regions. The first two groups were called Indians, the group that settled in the north were called Eskimos. These people are the only true native Canadians, the rest are new Canadians who have been transplanted from other parts of the world, especially from Europe. The first European visitors to North America were Norsemen who settled briefly in the 11th century. John Cabot, a Venetian seeking riches for England, made the next known voyage in 1...

Many different nationalities live there: besides Estonians there are Russians, Ukrainians, Belarussians, Finnish, Tatars, Latvians, Poles, Lithuanians, Jews, Germans and others. Due to this fact, the most popular languages spoken as a mother language are Estonian, Russian and Ukrainian

Home description

Home I live in a village called Kapu. This is a small and beautiful place where each house seems to stand on it's own little hill like royalty. Our home is family house with a large enclosed garden which is constrained with spruce hedge. My house was built in 1992 but it has been extensively modernised and extended since then. Our house consists a lot of different elements and components what I try to describe in my essay. The most important part of construction is foundation because it keeps buildings in one piece. My house has a strip foundation which is taken 1,5m below the ground to protect the structure against ground movement and damages. Due to the fact that foundation transfer the dead and imposed loads of the structure onto the ground it must be very solid and strong. Our foundation is made of pre cast concrete blocks which has a damp-proof course made of mastics on external side. ...

Past Tenses

I was studying when the phone rang. (Remember: there are some verbs that have no continuous know, believe, heat, etc.) Present Perfect Simple Used to talk about finished actions in an unfinished time period. I have eaten three cookies today (the cookies are finished but today isn't). I have cleaned my room this morning (the cleaning is finished, but it's still morning). Often the time period isn't mentioned. That means that it's the lifetime of the speaker. I have travelled to Europe (in my life). If the person is dead we can't use Present Perfect. Hitler has killed killed many people. (Hitler's time period is finished, so Past Simple must be used) Used with just, already, yet, ever, never. I've just finished my work. I've already walked the dog. He hasn't done his homework yet. Have you ever seen a dragon? I've never hurt anybody.

To begin with, I would strongly suggest that the number of students per class kept to below ten. In this way... To sump up, while most of us are satisfied with the conditions, I feel that above improvements would make things even better. If these suggestions were carried out... Complaint Dear Sir I am writing to complain about the holiday apartment I rented from you on 15th of August. I believe your advertisement was misleading in a number of ways. Firstly, the apartment was by no means spacious. The rooms were cramped and there was very little storage space. Also, the distance from the beach was ten times farther than you claimed. Furthermore, the balcony railing was broken. This was quite dangerous and could have caused an accident. In addition, it overlooked an unattractive car park in contrast to the ,,great view" you advertised. Consequently, I felt I could not stay any longer and returned home after 3 days. As you can imagine, I am quite disappointed

.......................7-8 Practice Online (TPO)......................................................................................................8-9 Conclusion.........................................................................................................................10 2 Introduction This chapter documents the advent and rise of automated essay scoring (AES) as a means of both assessment and instruction. The first section discusses what AES is, how it works, and who the major purveyors of the technology are. The second section describes outgrowths of the technology as it applies to on-going projects in measurement and education. In 1973, the late Ellis Page and colleagues at the University of Connecticut programmed the first successful automated essay scoring engine, "Project Essay Grade (PEG)" (1973)

Estuary English - A Controversial Issue?

[3][4] Rosewarne (1984) states that "the heartland of this variety lies by the banks of the Thames and its estuary". However, in the name itself the Thames is not mentioned. This seems to have irritated some of the academics, who willingly displayed their reluctance to the term. In his posting to the Linguist List, for instance, Battarbee (1996) talks of "... regional arrogance of the SouthEast within the UK: it takes for granted that 'Estuary' means the Thames Estuary. There are many estuaries in Great Britain, and several of the emerging regional mega-accents are estuarially based". Other linguists have criticised the term because it suggests that the variety is restricted to the area of the Thames estuary. Trudgill (2001) severely criticises both the concept of EE and its name, among others because "it suggests that it is a variety of English confined to the banks of the Thames Estuary, which it is not". Also Maidment (1994)

Silicon Valley

So while there are plenty of hackers who could start startups, there's no one to invest in them. Not Bureaucrats Do you really need the rich people? Wouldn't it work to have the government invest in the nerds? No, it would not. Startup investors are a distinct type of rich people. They tend to have a lot of experience themselves in the technology business. This helps them pick the right startups, and means they can supply advice and connections as well as money. And the fact that they have a personal stake in the outcome makes them really pay attention. Bureaucrats by their nature are the exact opposite sort of people from startup investors. The idea of them making startup investments is comic. It would be like mathematicians runningVogue-- or perhaps more accurately, Vogue editors running a math journal. Though indeed, most things bureaucrats do, they do badly

A letter and an essay

Conclusion It is noticeable that the eating habits of schoolleavers of Freedonian Secondary School are not very healthy. Moreover, there are no students who have both breakfast and school lunch, eat more than four slices of brown bread per day, and avoid fat. Personal freedom is a concept the meaning of which depends on the context from which it arises and to which it applies. In other words, it is a concept without a fixed meaning. To most people, freedom means the absence of fetters or bondage, eg. having the power to act or to speak or to think without externally imposed restraints. One's childhood's dream of adulthood is the desire to be independent. One's adulthood's dream of childhood is the desire to be free from responsibility and enjoy a life without care. In each case, the dream of freedom is idealised. A child dreaming of being an adult wants the independence that the adult has but does not understand the responsibility that

Health

Tuberculosis (TB) was almost stamped out, but now it is returning, having become resistant to many medicines that were used to cure it years ago. The most infectious disease in the Middle Ages was plague, now AIDS has replaced it. It is a serious problem and kills millions of people every year. This is a disease that cannot be cured yet but scientists and doctors are working on this problem. Not all the diseases are infectious. A very widely spread present-day trouble is allergy. Allergy means that people are over-sensitive to certain things, such as some kind of food, medicines, dust etc. Many people suffer from heart diseases. It is not rare that a person has a heart attack or a stroke. These troubles and neuroses are often caused by stress and by the quick tempo of our life. Cancer is still a major problem, in many cases not curable. It is a disease that causes cells in the body to grow uncontrollably. There are about 100 different kinds of cancer.
