At the beginning of the book he was a very wealthy, intelligent man with a very high status. His beauty charmed others. Basil Hallward was inspired to draw his portrait in order to preserve his beauty and youth. With Lord Henry practically "brain-washing" Dorian, he recognised that as long as he remained as young as he was in the painting, he would be handsome. I believe Rojas makes a good point about what effect love has on us, but it doesn't necessarily have to affect everyone. When I wrote my literal translation, I tried to write something that any modern English speaker could understand, and still feel the compassion in Celestina's statement.
