Biodiversity
The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity, is commonly referred to
as biodiversity. The number of species of plants, animals, and
microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the
different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral
reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Appropriate conservation
and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being
integral to any approach. In some way or form, almost all cultures have
recognized the importance of nature and its biological diversity for their
societies and have therefore understood the need to maintain it. Yet, power,
greed and politics have affected the precarious balance.
Why Is Biodiversity Important? Who Cares?
· Why is Biodiversity important? Does it really matter if there aren't so many
species?
· Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where each species, no matter

Human overpopulation

Human overpopulation Liis Lukk MJ15 What is overpopulation? • Overpopulation is an undesirable condition where the number of existing human population exceeds the carrying capacity of Earth. • Human overpopulation is among the most pressing environmental issues • Overpopulation can result from an increase in births, a decline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or an unsustainable biome and depletion of resources • Human population has been rising continuously since the end of the Black Death, around the year 1350 • The most significant increase has been since the 1950s, mainly due to medical advancements and increases in agricultural productivity • The recent rapid increase in human population over the past

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS Our environment is constantly changing. However, as our environment changes, so does the need to become increasingly aware of the problems that surround it. With a massive influx of natural disasters people need to be aware of what types of environmental problems our planet is facing. Current environmental problems make us vulnerable to disasters and tragedies, now and in the future. Unless we address the various issues seriously we are surely doomed for disaster. Current environmental problems require urgent attention. 1. Pollution: Pollution of air, water and soil require millions of years to recoup. Industry and motor vehicle exhaust are the number one pollutants. Heavy metals, nitrates and plastic are toxins responsible for pollution

Palm oil

for their income and survival, leaving these villagers incredibly vulnerable to the world market price of palm oil which they have no control over. You may not realize it, but palm oil is everywhere. Demand for this inexpensive, versatile vegetable oil has skyrocketed in recent years, and it can be found in thousands of common consumer products, from cookies to toothpaste. While it may be cheap in economic terms, however, palm oil carries a high environmental price tag. The good news is that palm oil doesn't have to come with these unacceptable impacts. New industry standards show that palm oil can be produced in a way that protects tropical forests, peatlands, and our atmosphere. Some companies in the palm oil supply chain have begun to commit to the new standards. The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) was created in 2004 following concerns raised by non-governmental organizations about environmental impacts related to

Education

while others fail. How can we predict success or failure, and compensate the at-risk children? Few practical options may be available to teachers. It is inevitable in universal public schooling that the extreme students, either dull or bright, will be hurt by our emphasis on the average. It is horrible to admit, but our society cannot assume that all members are capable of being well educated. We have unequal physical, mental and environmental status, and the poorer fringe will always exist. Those of us lucky enough to have a conscience, mature enough to see how things really are, must do what we can to help the less fortunate. Obligation to help. How can a rich person help a poor one? By giving some money? Well, can smart, or educated people give education to those needing it? Sometimes just taking the time to discuss things with troubled people is a great favor and aid. I don't have much surplus

The importance of the rainforest

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE RAINFOREST The beauty, majesty, and timelessness of a primary rainforest are indescribable. It is impossible to capture on film, to describe in words, or to explain to those who have never had the awe-inspiring experience of standing in the heart of a primary rainforest. Rainforests have evolved over millions of years to turn into the incredibly complex environments they are today. Rainforests represent a store of living and breathing renewable natural resources that for eons, by virtue of their richness in both animal and plant species, have contributed a wealth of resources for the survival and well-being of humankind. These resources have included basic food supplies, clothing, shelter, fuel, spices, industrial raw materials, and medicine for all those who have lived in the majesty of the forest. However, the inner dynamics of a tropical rainforest is an intricate and fragile system. Everything is so interdependent that upsetting one part can lead to

Overfishing

The above shows that over 25% of all the world's fish stocks are either overexploited or depleted (dipliitid). Another 52% is fully exploited, these are in imminent danger of overexploitation and collapse (kollaaps). Therefore a total of almost 80% of the world's fisheries are fully to over exploited, depleted, or in a state of collapse. Worldwide about 90% of the stocks of large predatory fish stocks are already gone.  In the real world all this comes down to two serious problems.  We are losing species as well as entire ecosystems. As a result the overall ecological unity of our oceans are under stress and at risk of collapse.  We are in risk of losing a valuable food source many depend upon for social, economical or dietary reasons. FISHING DOWN THE FOOD WEB: It's not only the fish that is affected by fishing. As we are fishing down the food web the increasing effort needed to catch something of commercial value marine

Different types of forests and their forms of usage.

Different types of forests and their forms of usage TARTU 2010 Forest A forest (also called a wood, woodland, wold, weald, holt, frith) is an area with a high density of trees. Forests cover approximately 30% of land and 9.4% of all the planet earth. They are also responsible for regulating our planet's climate and act as large purifiers of airs, by absorbing carbon dioxide, and giving out oxygen. Different types of forests Forests are divided into following main types: o Tropical forest o Subtropical forest o Plantations o Boreal forest o Temperate forest o Seasonal or monsoon forest Tropical and Subtropical Forests Tropical and subtropical forests, also known as rainforests or tropical rainforests, are lavish and ample forests with broad leave tree. They are mostly found at lowlands near the equator - Asia, Africa, South & Central America and on many of the Pacific Islands. Almost 5
