Might the Welsh language face a bright future?
Welsh belongs to a branch of Celtic , an Indo-European language . The language is being used about half a million people in Wales and possibly another few hundred thousand people within England and even Australia and United States of America.
The normal language of every day life is still English but in some regions such as Gwynedd and Dyfed, the use of Welsh is very wide and well spread. The tendency nowadays is towards the development and introduction of Welsh. This could not have been said at the first part of the 20th century .
Welsh have been under the reign or a part of Great Britain for a long time. During the 16th century, particularly at the time of Henry the VIII, they tried to force the Welsh language out by an Act which declared that the language to be used in courts and administrative offices would have to be English. And of course the most natural process started as people were forced to talk English, they taught their children English and the Welsh language was to be forgotten . But that did not happen .
The Welsh language has had its ups and downs, being mostly at its low level. But now I think that the situation has changed. Nowadays more and more young people cherish their roots and it is important to be proud of their origin. The future of the language lies in the hands of the young generation. Before that as English was mostly used, the learning of English was the most important thing because it was the language of communication.
Nowadays the Welsh language is being supported by individuals as well as organizations . The support is material when it comes to supporting different establishments which further the Welsh language. But the support is also moral as more and more public bodies, major businesses, even smaller companies and voluntary organizations are making increasing use of the language. The use of the language as a business language side by side with English has become somewhat of a sign of quality customer service. There has been an increasing interest towards Welsh also because at the workplace the ability to speak and write Welsh has become as important as for example computer skills have been.
To my mind the Welsh people have set their sight to preserving their language and even to enlarge the population speaking it. Families are being reminded of the use of raising their children bilingually. Of course the use of English will not disappear, in my opinion, never , which is quite logical. But I think that the Welsh language itself will not either.
I think that us, Estonians can understand their pursuit very well and the tendency in the world towards preserving smaller languages , is in its high point.
