The Lower Old Town meanwhile developed as an autonomous merchantile centre, flourishing during the 13th-16th centuries, when the city enjoyed membership of the powerful Hanseatic Trading League. Generally speaking these two districts are now collectively referred as the Old Town. The Town wall and towers Medieval fortresses, which emerged during the development of the medieval town at the end of the 13th century, surrounded the city centre as a closed defence zone. By the 16th century, Tallinn's defence system was one of the most powerful in Northern Europe. The city wall was three meters thick, sixteen meters high, and four kilometres long, completely encircling the city with 46 defence towers. The portion of the wall that has survived is two kilometres long, encompassing 26 of the original towers. Three towers and a section of the town wall surrounding the Old Town are open to the public and can be visited by anyone with a sense of adventure.

This floor had a narrow light and airshaft and no embrasures. The ammunition was hoisted up through the openings in the domed vaults by the help of a winch. On the upper, defence floors the guns were rigged in embrasures that were provided with niches for the logs that served to stop the backlash. The floors of the embrasures were initially stepped to enable the men handle the guns better. The fireplaces on every floor were needed to get fire for the firearms. Reconstructions in the 16th and 17th century changed the original looks of the tower considerably. It was built as a defence on the seaward side of Tallinn, but also to impress visitors coming in from the sea. In the Middle Ages the Great Coastal Gate was about 300 footsteps from the harbour. Legends say, that during storms, the waves reached the gate. . In the 16th century, a powerful cannon tower was built next to the Great Coastal Gate. It had 155 loopholes, diameter of 25 meters, and a height of about 20 meters. The tower was named Roosikrantsi, but as it was the stoutest tower in the Wall, people started to call it "Fat Margaret". Through history, the cannon tower has also served as a storehouse for gunpowder and weapons, and as a prison.

A book review The book I read was „As above so below”. It was written by Peter Brugel in 2002. The book covers basically all of the generes: horror, historical, science-fiction, and romance. The bookis about six people in Paris, France in the 16th century. The two main characters know eachother. When the church was handed over, the people had a very grand goodbye(farewell) to the church even though it was only left temporarily. On the 16th April Saint John´s church got a new organ that was shipped from Germany. It was 6 metres high and 3 metres wide. Right now there should be approximately 4 organs in the church. People are worrying right now about the cracks in the floor of the just renovated church. The cracks were made from the constructions on the freedom square. If the cracks turn any bigger, then the tower of the church may fall bringing at least half of the church down with it.
