Delaunay concentrated on Orphism, while his later works were more abstract, reminiscent of Paul Klee. His key influence related to bold use of colour, and a clear love of experimentation of both depth and tone. While he was a child, Delaunay's parents divorced, and he was raised by his uncle, in La Ronchère (near Bourges). He took up painting at an early age and, by 1903, he was producing mature imagery in a confident, impressionistic style.

centuries ago, taking firm root in the middle of the 19th century. From the 13th century onwards the ancient Estonians had to continually fight for their freedom, against the Danes, Germans, Swedes, Poles and Russians. The Russians annexed the Estonian territory from Sweden after the Great Northern War in 1721 by the Treaty of Nystad. After the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917, Estonians fought for their independence, and in 1918 the Republic of Estonia was established and endured until 1940. In the summer of that year the Soviet Union occupied all three Baltic states. As a result of the deep inner crisis within the Soviet Empire it became possible to re-establish the Estonian Republic in August 1991. A month later Estonia joined the United Nations. In 1997 the population reached 1.462 million; from this Estonians total 65% (950,124) and other nationalities 35%. The capital Tallinn, mentioned for the first time in 1154, has a population of 434,800 (1995)

After 1780, Kulibin worked on possibilities for a metallic bridge, but these projects were also rejected by the government. Altogether Kulibin designed three projects for wooden and three projects for metallic bridges. In 1779, he built a lantern that could emit a powerful light using a weak light source. This invention was used industrially for lighting workshops, lighthouses, ships, etc. In 1791, Kulibin constructed a push-cycle cart, in which he used a flywheel, a brake, a gearbox and roller bearing

Born June 11, 1868, Alice Kipling was privately educated. She went to India at age 16 and married British army officer John Fleming. While in India she wrote a number of poems, and in 1893 initially experimented with automatic writing. After a long illness she returned to England in 1902 and in the following year read the classic study Human Personality and Its Survival of Bodily Death, by F. W. H. Myers. As a result she contacted the secretary of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), London, regarding her own automatic writing. She was one of the seven principal mediums involved in the famous cross-correspondences cases. Fleming continued to do automatic writing until 1910, when she suffered a nervous breakdown. Early Life

Eesti kunst 20. sajandi alguses

Tallinnas avas 1903. a. oma ateljeekooli Ants Laikmaa ja Tartus 1904. a. Kristjan Raud. See haridus ei asendanud päris korralikku, kõrgemates koolides saadavat, kuid kanged eesti poisid õppisid ise omal käel, reisides palju, eelkõige Pariisi, külastades muuseume ja täiendasid end vabaakadeemiates (kool, kus väikese raha eest võisid kõik käia). Kunstnikud võtsid koos teiste haritlastega osa 1905. a. revolutsiooni sündmustest, mis kajastus ka nende loomingus. Revolutsioonisündmustes osalemisest oli tegelikult tähtsam

He completed his doctorate on the subject of tabes dorsalis in 1885. In 1882, he joined former classmate George Budd as his partner at a medical practice in Plymouth, but their relationship proved difficult, and Conan Doyle soon left to set up an independent practice. Arriving in Portsmouth in June of that year with less than £10 to his name, he set up a medical practice at 1 Bush Villas in Elm Grove, Southsea. The practice was initially not very successful; while waiting for patients, he again began writing stories. His first significant work was A Study in Scarlet, which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and featured the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes, who was partially modelled after his former university professor, Joseph Bell. They also had their parties and receptions there. Town Hall Square In the Middle Ages it was the real centre of the town, the focus of its social life and the most crowded part of Tallinn in those days. There were dwelling houses of the merchants and craftsmen at the side of the square. Numerous shops and stalls stood in front of them where tradesmen sold their goods. The square was a market place already in the 11th century and served as such until 1896. It was called Suur Turg and got its present name Raekoja Plats only in 1923. On one side of the square, there was the House of Weights and Measures where all imported goods were weighed and measured before they got into the shop. There were also two pillories the big and the small one in the square. The culprits and those who were sentenced to death were brought to the pillory. The small pillory (for smaller criminals) was fixed to the wall of the Town Hall

Previous names of the street also refer to it: Susterstrate 1361; Platea sororum 1364-1380; 1606 Süsterstrasse and Schwestergasse, all of which include the concept of a nun or a sister. After the Reformation, the monastery was eliminated and in 1631 a gymnasium was founded in its rooms, but the street name remained in the form of Süsterstrasse and Cisternstrasse. Art Museum of Estonia

Art Museum of Estonia Art Museum of Estonia was founded on November 17th, 1919, but it was not until 1921 that it got its first permanent building the Kadriorg Palace, built in the 18th century. In 1929 the palace was expropriated from the Art Museum in order to rebuild it as the residence of the President of Estonia. The Art Museum of Estonia was housed in several different temporary spaces, until it moved back to the palace in 1946. In September, 1991 the Kadriorg Palace was closed, because it had totally deteriorated by then. At the end of the year the Supreme Council of the Republic of Estonia decided to guarantee the construction of a new building for the Art Museum of Estonia in Kadriorg. Untill then the Knighthood House at Toompea Hill served as the temporary main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. The exhibition there was opened on April 1, 1993

times, the medieval cathedral was quite different from the present appearance. For example, the tower on the western side of the church was built only in the 18 th century, the annexes of the southern side date back to the 16 th -18th centuries and those on the northern side to the 15th century. While the Lutheran reformation movement had prevailed in the churches of downtown Tallinn by 1524, the Toompea cathedral held Catholic services until 1561, when the Kingdom of Sweden gained control over Tallinn. A library was established at the church in 1641. The copper roof was built thanks to the donation of Queen Christina in 1651. While nearly the entire Toompea burnt down in a fire in 1433, the fire of 1684 was even more devastating. Only the walls of the church survived the whole wooden interior and the library burned down and even the arches and carved stone details suffered some damage

Tallinn-topic

The Estonians were the first to build a stronghold on the spot of the Toompea Hill, but the real Tallinn was built by the Danes who conquered the north of Estonia in 1219. Legend has it that one day, when the Danes were about to lose a bloody battle, the sky suddenly opened and a red flag with a white cross on it dropped down upon them from the heaven. This is how the Danes obtained their national flag. In 1346 the Danish king sold his Estonian lands to the Teutonic Order, who a year later resold them to the Livonian Order. The Germans renamed Tallinn and called it Reval. Toompea became the seat of the German-born gentry. A fortified wall was built between Toompea (the Upper Town) and the Lower Town, as there were conflicts between the two. The Lower Town was the home of simple people, the artisans and the merchants. The doors and gates in the wall were locked at night. Tallinn joined the German-dominated Hanseatic League in 1285 and became a junction
