Irish Potato Famine

In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food needs, failed. Many families were evicted because they couldn't pay for their land. Hand in hand, starvation and diseases spreaded all across the country. As soon as spring began, people started emigrating to Canada - ships bringing lumber to England were glad to receive paying passengers. Almost every ship had a third of their passenger's die at sea or upon their arrival. On the shores of Quebec eyewitnesses saw hundreds literally flung on the beach, left in the mud, dying. Yet, it was only the potato crop that failed wheat, oats, pork, mutton etc. were excellent,

The song is adopted by the Communist Party. Five London prostitutes die (they ate poisoned grapes and were then disemboweled). Jack the Ripper is blamed, but the killer is never caught; the rumor later circulates that Queen Victoria ordered the murders to distract attention from a scandal involving her son, Prince Albert. want to make a difference. It will happen when diverse groups from industry, environment, schools, service clubs, business, governments & the public come together and work towards a common vision of sustainability for our communities - balancing the needs of human and natural systems. My vision is of a world free of war, hatred, and greed. It is a world in balance with nature, a place where poverty and starvation have been abolished and replaced with equality for all. It is a time where we have liberated ourselves from the grip of racism and discrimination and embrace individual and cultural diversity. I see a future in which we meet the basic needs of every man, woman, and child and extend to all the opportunity to realize their hopes and dreams for a better life. It is a vision where education and health are accessible to everyone and where all human beings share in clean water and air.

In essence, hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot afford to meet their most basic need for food. Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger daily are usually poor and often lack the social safety nets we enjoy, such as soup kitchens, food stamps, and job training programs. The polar bear is listed as an endangered species. In the past people hunted polar bears for their fur, today there are conservation projects to restrict hunting in the countries they exist. The polar bears aren't safe yet because chemicals are polluting their food stock. The ice packs in the North Pole are melting sooner in the spring, and cutting their time to hunt seals. The major cause of death for young polar bears is starvation. Musk ox It looks like a huge dust mop on hooves, their long hair reaching almost to the ground. The musk ox gets its name from the odour produced by glands beneath its eyes. The male has thick horns that almost meet on top of its head in what is called a "boss". The horns curve down besides its face and out at the ends. The female has smaller horns, without a boss. Instead the top of her head is covered with whitish hair. In the summer the musk ox herd has about 10 members

Swifts A Modest Proposal

The current essay attempts to analyze the use of satire in Jonathan Swift's most discussed pamphlet A Modest Proposal and the purposes of using this specific genre. The pamphlet reveals a vast number of social and religious problems: one of the major at those days was beggary. The satire was written in 1729, at the time, when economic situation of the country was extremely prejudiced by another crop failure. Thousands of poverty-stricken Irish were dying of starvation, causing the country's population to fall. However, despite the famine and constantly increasing number of deaths, the government did not implement measures to improve the existing situation. Thence, Swift, being an Irishman by birth and feeling disappointed of the ruling classes, proposes a solution to the problem by publishing his shocking work, the bitterest satire A Modest proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People in

evolution remained a mystery. Many scientists rejected evolution and the Great Chain of Life feeling that its concepts had no place in biological science. The key was produced by the theorist of the "dismal science" of economics, Thomas Malthus. Malthus said that human (and animal) populations increased at a geometric rate, whereas food supply increased only at an arithmetic rate. Therefore population was continually outstripping food supply, and was kept in check only by starvation, or by indirect acts such as war and diseases. Malthusianism raised a very good question which is not easily noticed. Which individuals survived in hard times, and which died? Luck was probably the largest factor, but not the only one, other factors applied, such as the strong, the courageous, or the adaptable had a somewhat better chance of surviving than those who lacked those characteristics. To the degree that strength, drive, or adaptability were acquired characteristics, they would

The activists, and in particular the American Indian Movement, used the mass media in an attempt to sway depictions of themselves, which allowed them to generate stronger political support by having sympathetic news reports. Present situation Today there are more than half a million Indians in the United States. Economically they range from pauperism to affluence. A few have made money from oil and other natural sources found on their lands, but many thousands live at near-starvation levels. Some are educated and completely assimilated in white society; many live in nearly complete isolation from non-Indian Americans. Relocation programs have taken hundreds of Indians to work in cities; thousands of others cling to the security of their reservations, hoping to gain education and assistance necessary to develop the resources of their lands and become self-sustaining. Generally, the Indians are still proud of their traditions and heritage, and many of them

Edward I. Edward I conquered Wales in 1284. He also tried to conquer Scotland and it even went right for him but only temporarily. Under the direction of Robert Bruce Scotland managed to restore its independence. In 1307 he was succeeded by Edward II, his son. In 1311-1315 there was the Great Famine. There was a series of cold and wet springs and early winters that reduced harvests throughout western Europe, and by the Spring of 1315, about ten percent of the population had died of starvation, and a number more had perished of illnesses that they could not fight off in their malnourished state. Edward II's reign lasted until 1327 when the leading was taken over from him by his son Edward III. The Hundred Years War began in 1337. It was a struggle between England and France for the dominance of Wester Europe. In Medieval England, the Black Death was to kill 1.5 million people out of an estimated total of 4 million people between 1348 and1350. No medical

The most negative about GMo is the fact that nobody really knows the real effect of it for consumers. Genetically modified food was mainly created to prevent and eventually stop the starvation in the world. Estonian media has been talking alot about GMO in the past couple of years and therefore the author became interested about this topic. Several questions about the GMO has been raised by the autor. These questions were the foundation of this research project and its aims: 1. To find out, why genetically modified food was created. 2. To find out, what are the dangers of comsuming GMO to the environment and people's health. 3

the duration of oil exposure as well as the degree of other stresses. The waters over most reefs are shallow and turbulent, and few clean-up techniques can be recommended. Birds which congregate in large numbers on the sea or shorelines to breed, feed or moult are particularly vulnerable to oil pollution. Although oil ingested by birds during preening may be lethal, the most common cause of death is from drowning, starvation and loss of body heat following damage to the plumage by oil. Impact of oil on fisheries and mariculture An oil spill can directly damage the boats and gear used for catching or cultivating marine species. Floating equipment and fixed traps extending above the sea surface are more likely to become contaminated by floating oil whereas submerged nets, pots, lines and bottom trawls are usually well protected, provided they are not lifted through an oily sea surface.

Commonly, the accused was stripped naked and shaved of all her body hair, then subjected to thumb-screws and the rack, spikes and bone- crushing ,,boots," starvation and beatings. The point is obvious: The witch-craze did not arise spontaneously in the peasantry. It was a calculated ruling class campaign of terrorization. The Church and European society were not always so zealous in hunting witches or blaming them for bad occurrences. Saint Boniface declared in the 8th century that belief in the existence of witches was un-Christian. The emperor Charlemagne decreed that the burning of supposed witches

Harold McMillan articulated his now famous “winds of change” sweeping Africa. We had high hopes for Africa, for the Black race, that the insidious imposition of foreign rule on us, the looting of Africa’s natural resources by our colonial masters accorded us would be things of history. That is more than forty years ago. Unfortunately, the promise of independence has not been fulfilled. Today, Africa has become more desolate; there is more starvation, diseases and non-provision of essential services than when we got our independence. There are all kinds of wars in Africa than the rest of world put together. The majority of so-called Africans leaders want to stay in power until the day their bodies are put in the grave. As they pass by, they seem to have the blank stare of death, unconscious to Marlowe's presence even though they pass within six inches of him. Again in the grove of death, Marlowe sees the effect of the civilizing light of Europe upon the natives. "They were dying slowly . . . nothing but black shadows of disease and starvation . . . lost in uncongenial surroundings, fed on unfamiliar food, they sickened, became inefficient, and were then allowed to crawl away and rest" (82). Marlowe implies in this passage that the natives were abused, used relentlessly for labor until they were spent, at which point they were "allowed" by the civilized whites to crawl into the grove of death to die. Truly a barbaric and dehumanizing view,

Morbidity Dickinson's poems reflect her "early and lifelong fascination" with illness, dying and death. Perhaps surprisingly for a New England spinster, her poems allude to death by many methods: "crucifixion, drowning, hanging, suffocation, freezing, premature burial, shooting, stabbing and guillotinage". She reserved her sharpest insights into the "death blow aimed by God" and the "funeral in the brain", often reinforced by images of thirst and starvation. Dickinson scholar Vivian Pollak considers these references an autobiographical reflection of Dickinson's "thirstingstarving persona", an outward expression of her needy selfimage as small, thin and frail. Dickinson's most psychologically complex poems explore the theme that the loss of hunger for life causes the death of self and place this at "the interface of murder and suicide". Gospel poems Throughout her life, Dickinson wrote poems reflecting a preoccupation with

I know of no better illustration of the way reciprocal obligations can reach long and powerfully into the future than the per- plexing story of $5,000 of relief aid that was exchanged between Mexico and Ethiopia. In 1985, Ethiopia could justly lay claim to the greatest suffering and pri- vation in the world. Its economy was in ruin. Its food supply had been ravaged by years of drought and internal war. Its inhabitants were dying by the thousands from disease and starvation. Under these circumstances, I would not have been surprised to learn of a $5,000 relief donation from Mexico to that wrenchingly needy country. I remember my feeling of amazement, though, when a brief news- paper item I was reading insisted that the aid had gone in the opposite direction. Native officials of the Ethiopian Red Cross had decided to send the money to help the victims of that year's earthquakes in Mexico City.

Their torpedoing of 110 tankers from the East Indies resulted in oil shortages in the homeland that prevented the training of badly needed pilots and forced a split-up of Japan's Navy, with serious tactical results. Starvation at home caused Japan to make surrender overtures even before the islands were invaded, before the atom bombs exploded. After the war, Tojo said that the destruction of the merchant marine was one of the three factors that defeated Japan, the others being leapfrog strategy and fast carrier operations.
