Cats

During the 1990s, some purebred Norwegian Forest Cats in Sweden produced chocolate/lilac and cinnamon/fawn offspring. However, those colours are not found in the purebred Norwegian Forest Cat gene pool. Had the gene pool become polluted by someone, perhaps generations ago, breeding their Norwegian Forest Cat to another breed? Was it a spontaneous mutation? Crossing of those cats with known chocolate and cinnamon colour cats of other breeds ruled out chocolate/lilac and cinnamon/fawn genes. These cats were a totally new colour, peculiar to the Norwegian Forest Cat gene pool and dubbed the "X Colours". They are now called Amber and Light Amber. The Amber effect is due to the extension gene (also called red factor) which controls the production of red and black pigment. The dominant version of the gene produces normal black pigment in the coat while the recessive version produces red pigment. The name comes from the effect of black or brown pigment not being

2003, March), Hebrew (Vantage Learning, 2001), and Bahasa Malay (Vantage Learning, 2002). Computers do not "understand" the written text being evaluated Unlike humans, a computer cannot interpret the play on words, and infer that the predicate in the answer (i.e., "ajar") is being cleverly used as a noun (i.e., "a jar"). What the computer does in an AES context is to analyze the written text into its observable components. Different AES systems evaluate different numbers of these components. Page and Peterson (1995) referred to these elements as "proxes" or approximations for underlying "trins" (i.e., intrinsic characteristics) of writing. It is the observable components that automated essay scoring engines, identify, computationally, and subsequently use to compute essay scores. AES statistical models are developed by weighting the various observable components as they relate to intrinsic characteristics of writing

still exists in different forms, by the Roman invasion begun in 43. AD. The Romans ruled Britain for over two hundred years and left behind three things of importance: their roads, the sights of important cities notably London, and the seeds of Christianity. The Latin way of life villas, arts, language and political organization all vanished, however after the invasions from Northern Europe by the Anglo-Saxons and Jutes from the 5th century onwards. These pagan peoples' were easily converted to Christianity and the preachers from Rome brought with them learning and civilization. Christianity was an important factor in enabling the various kingdoms created by the Nordic invaders to be united in the 9th century. The Vikings first raided England to plunder it, then in the days of Alfred of Wessex. They began to win wide lands `to plow and rule'. In the 10 th century England fell under

Addiction and drugs

Secondly some people start smoking because there's a rumour saying that it's slimming. And another reason may be that it may relieve stress. After three or four cigarettes you get addicted to it because of nicotine. It is a drug that stimulates the brain. When the level of nicotine falls in your blood and you're a regular smoker, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms, such as craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger, difficulty with concentration, or just feeling awful. These symptoms are relieved by the next cigarette. Most smokers need to smoke regularly to feel normal and to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms. So once you start smoking it is very hard to quit. But why is smoking so harmful? Cigarettes have tar in them which contains many chemicals. These deposit in the lungs and can get into the blood vessels and are carried to other parts of the body. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including over 50 known carcinogens (causes of cancer) and

Reasons why human beings are unique

bonobos. But we are the only ones who peer into their world and write books about it. We see the roots of many behaviours once considered uniquely human in our closest relatives "Obviously we have similarities. We have similarities with everything else in nature; it would be astonishing if we didn't. But we've got to look at the differences," says Ian Tattersall, a paleoanthropologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, US. To understand these differences, a good place to start is to look at how we got here. Why are we the only human species still alive today whereas many of our early-human ancestors went extinct? Neanderthals (left) didn't fare as well as we did (Credit: SPL) Neanderthals (left) didn't fare as well as we did (Credit: SPL) Humans and chimpanzees diverged from our common ancestor more than six million years ago. away in the Galaxy. GCRs are mostly pieces of atoms:protons, electrons, and atomic nuclei which have had all of the surrounding electrons stripped during their high-speed (almost the speed of light) passage through the Galaxy. Cosmic rays provide one of our few direct samples of matterfrom outside the solar system. The magnetic fields of the Galaxy, the solar system, and the Earth have scrambled the flight paths of these particles so much that we can no longer point back to their sources in the Galaxy. If you made a map of the sky with cosmic ray intensities, it would be completely uniform. So we have to determine where cosmic rays come from by indirect means. One of the indirect observations we can make is the "composition" of GCRs. This can tell us a lot about the GCR sources and the cosmic rays' trip through the Galaxy. The "composition" of cosmic

School system in the USA

Foreign students who would like to attend an American college or university must have completed coursework that is equivalent to what is taught in an American high school. Foreign students who would like to attend an American high school, need to consider how the high school they select will give them access to the best colleges. Undergraduate school Students who have completed high school and would like to attend college or university must attend as an undergraduate school. These are schools that offer either a two-year degree called an associate degree or a four-year degree called a bachelors degree in a specific course of study. That course of study is called the major. While most schools that offer a four-year degree will admit students who have not yet chosen a major, all students are required to select a major by their second year at school. Students who complete an associate degree can

Identity as a personal project

In this space important is ability to be flexible, on the one side, and to stay individual on the other side. An identity should be strong and reflective to be able to change and to adapt. “Particular narrative going” Actually I like the metaphor, as I already mentioned, I think of an identity as a story and characters. I think every word in this metaphor means something special about self-identity. My own “narrative” consists of these three words “particular” “narrative” “going”. Like every story, my one has to be special, individual. The one I designed by myself and for myself. I find, that my own narrative was built with help of my family and friends – that’s what adds individual traits. I learned from my parents our family culture and from my friends rules of communication. In my opinion, these are groups what influenced my behaviour at the start. The “narrative” means the context

Sheep senses and social cognition

When young lambs sleep, they will seek out their mothers and lie close to them. Sheep conscious of their surroundings and thinking about individuals or objects in their absence Do you think that sheep are conscious? A number of complex behaviours are higly suggestive of consciousness, such as self- recognition, social communication, individual recognition of members of their own, or other, species, deceit and emphati and complex rule learning. However, reasonable evidence for many of these behaviours has only been provided in higher primates and even in these cases experiment are often open to re-interpretation due to limitations in the paradigms used. Recent advantages in functional brain Imaging techniques using magnetic resonance Imaging and positron emissioon tomography have allowed studies to be conducted in humans aimed at understanding which brain regions are functionally active during actual perception of objects.

dozen countries, capital punishment may be actually carried out (Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia...). In Africa, recently, several presidents have brutally acted on their will to combat personally this "scourge" which they consider "anti-African". Even in other countries where homosexuality is not considered a crime, persecutions have multiplied. In Brazil, for example, death squads and skin heads spread terror: 1,960 homophobic murders have been officially reported between 1980 and 2000. In these conditions, it is difficult to think that "tolerance" is gaining ground. On the contrary, in the majority of these nations, homophobia appears more violent today than ever before. The tendency is not, therefore, towards a general improvement, far from it. Tolerance and diversity

Tolerance and diversity Tolerance is a very important issue for the people all over the world. Sadly the lack of it has influenced us more than the existence. On the other hand people have always liked the diversity of this world. For example, we can't imagine life without our Chinese food, Italian pasta and especially McDonalds , can we? We have to admit that it would be very unpleasant without simple things like these so is it so hard for us to cope with different types of people? We live our lives differently and see the world in different ways, everyone use words that they feel like using , but in the end we are all trying to answer the same question. There is no such thing as the correctness of one people with his religion because each and every one of us thinks that the one he believes is the only real. You do not have to like the same food,

Would less TV and movie violence lead to fewer violent crimes

Would less TV and movie violence lead to fewer violent crimes TV and movies become more and more popular in each year. Reason why we enjoy that kind of entertainment is because of the excitement and fun it offers. There are lots of genres in movies and TV series but most watched of them is action where plenty of crime is shown. Because of the rise in crime and at the same time in action movies or series people have started worrying that these kind of movies affect people to commit more crimes. Firstly, action films/ TV series always include robberys, explosions, car chases, shooting and all the other more little crimes. Usually these movies/series have about the same plot, where there are good guys and bad guys fighting and chasing each other. Often in the end good guys somehow still capture the criminals and live happily forward. This actually shows that the good guys will always eventually capture the

In 1922, Ernst Öpik published a paper where he estimated the distance of the Andromeda Galaxy. Using a novel and simple astrophysical method, he determined the distance as 450 kpc. To Room Nineteen

“To Room Nineteen” “To room nineteen” is considered to be one of the best short stories by Doris Lessing. The book takes place in a mid-twentieth century in London suburb. It gives insight about women’s rights and London society on these days. Showes how the perfect lives as they seemed from outside, acctually weren’t that ideal on the inside. The book itself is about a middle-aged woman, Susan, whose life is spinning around her four children, ideal husband and lovely home. Everything seems to be just perfect. When the youngest child went off to school, the seeming peace in this family is soon gone. Susan didn’t find the sense of freedom that she expected. Brands are...

When we talk about Apple or Mercedes everyone has their brand image. Brand awareness raises and we recognize brand name by logo or slogan. So, it seems that brands are necessary. On the one hand they do. Brand is luxury, exclusivity, and the top we should seek for. Everyone wants to be attractive and brands may help to impress other people. Buying brands show that you have taste, you look for newness, it also shows that you can achieve something more, than an ordinary person, because all these brands are expensive and not everyone can buy them. People also buy brands, because they guarantee the high quality of product. On the other hand, today you never can be 100% sure in quality and originality even if you buy product of market leader. Also, after a good brand launch, there is a large probability that someone besides you will buy something from the new collection and if you are living in a small

Linguistics lexicon handout

The history of many languages is greatly marked by the fact that their environments have changed dramatically over the past couple of millennia. Great technological changes have led to great cultural changes, including greater contact between different peoples, which in turn have led to more cultural and technological changes. Therefore it's not surprising that there have been great changes in the lexicons of these languages as well, mostly in the form of new words for new things. ("Things" in this context can be virtually anything, not just physical objects, but cultural artefacts like a new type of dance, a new way of killing people, or the concept of voting for your leaders.) Where do all the new words come from? The diachronic development of the lexicon in any given language or group of languages is characterised by quite a few regularities and regularly occurring phenomena. Moreover,

PETROLEUM

Because the pressure is lower at the surface than underground, some of the gas will come out of solution and be recovered (or burned) as associated gas or solution gas. A gas well produces predominantly natural gas. However, because the underground temperature and pressure are higher than at the surface, the gas may contain heavier hydrocarbons such as pentane, hexane, and heptane in the gaseous state. At surface conditions these will condense out of the gas to form natural gas condensate, often shortened to condensate. Condensate resembles petrol in appearance and is similar in composition to some volatile light crude oils. The proportion of light hydrocarbons in the petroleum mixture varies greatly among different oil fields, ranging from as much as 97 percent by weight in the lighter oils to as little as 50 percent in the heavier oils and bitumens.

We delude ourselves about African Kingdoms which had thrived before the onslaught of first the Arabs, and later the Caucasians. We talk about the Pyramids of Egypt, the great empire of Mali and the learning capital of Timbuktu. Yes, I am constrained to agree that these were great legacies that our ancestors left us, but one cannot deny the fact that in the middle Passage of the 19th century we stopped functioning as a people with intelligence and the instinct to defend ourselves. In the 17th century, more than 36 million African men and women were taken into slavery and to the shores of America. Of that 36 million, more than 18 million died in the Trans-Atlantic crossings. our brand new selves. We could leave behind the mistakes, the regret and the hurtful words, all of it. Surely Christmas is a perfect time to start over, to make changes that matter and to turn our lives around. People celebrate Christmas differently from one to another. For example, my family celebrates Christmas by having a Christmas tree and decorating it. We also exchange gifts, sometimes go to church, and cook a big dinner, a really big dinner. But I must say that when we do all these things, we don't keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas - celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas is one of the biggest celebrations for all Christians. However, it would be wrong to assume that it is only celebrated among Christians. With the world becoming a global village, Christmas is now celebrated in many countries around the world. Though the mode of celebration, the dates and the traditions vary, the spirit remains the same everywhere.

Recreational use of Pärnu river (essee)

The flood plain grasslands located along the riverbanks are the typical example of plant communities formed as a result of the joint influence of river floods and human activities. They used to maintain the grassland through hay-making but now the endorsements are very low and owners don't take care of the land at the river bank. Some scientists think that letting the grasslands grow untouched is good for the biodiversity, but this is not the case here. For example eagles, which hunt on these grounds just abandon these areas and move on to nest somewhere else. Also the growth of the bigger trees is hindered by the underwood vegetation, which consist of willow, alder and aspen. Pärnu river affords many opportunities for tourism and recreational activity. As an example: 1) Fishing: There is a fish farm in Roosna-Alliku that breed rainbow trouts 2) Canoeing: There are several enterprises (e.g. Edela Loodusmatkad OÜ) which offer canoeing trip for a day or up to 3 days

A basic education is provided free of charge for young people in nearly all developed and democratic countries. However, when it comes to university, or higher education, there are many different approaches taken. In some countries (such as Finland and Sweden) higher education is still free. In other countries, higher education is purchased like any other service. In many countries (such as the UK and the USA), fees are charged to students but how much of the cost of education these cover varies greatly. Often governments offer loans and financial support to help students pay these fees. However, more and more people want to go to university, putting student funding systems under pressure. So should Governments charge fees for higher education, or provide it for free? Government should charge fees because it is well known that the `education' is often only a small part of the university experience. Students spend far too much time and

My analysis of the article “ Why Ebola is so dangerous”

Ebola, what are it's symptoms, and how it spreads. People have to be aware that it is very dangerous, deadly and easily spreading disease. Let's hope that scientists will work out a vaccine that helps to treat the ones with Ebola. The author used some expressions that I think are common to journalism. I have heard those expressions in news, read in newspapers and magazines For example, in some cases; as more than; although; to avoid; to get across; in addition to; such as; including. These expressions are important because they make an article more understandable and easier to read. It gives colour to an article. From the lecture "Organizing text" the author has used following expressions: as more than; which; through; with; by; although; so far; as long as; such as; to avoid; in the way; in addition to; so. These words are in the text to diverse it and make it more understandable. The structure of the article is divided with subtitles. Although, there are no

One of the most outstanding BMW manufacturing facility is the Cowley plant. Unions in that plant won the CIPD People Management Award because of their high performance and very good teamwork. HRM had two high-profile initiatives like establishing self-directed work groups and using an employee suggestion scheme in which individual bonus payments are given in return for cost savings and production improvement suggestions. Here is some statistics how these initiatives worked: · in 2002, production targets were exceeded by more than 60 per cent; · the programme of continuous process improvement saved £10.5 million in two years 2002- 2003; · in 2003 there were 14 333 employee suggestions of which 11 064 ( 80 per cent) were implemented. Thesis Statement The Sorrows on Young Werther

Tähe-Kai Tillo XI a Thesis Statement(NEW) ,,The Sorrows of Young Werther" The main character Werther was selfish and with low self-esteem. His selfishness can be seen in two turning-points of the book, when Werther leaves Wahlheim and when he commits suicide. From his point of view these are the only solutions but he is not thinking about Lotte. Although she denies it Werther was much loved by her, he just did not try hard enough to win over her heart. Werther believes that the only way to end his sorrows is to commit suicide but he doesn't have enough positivity to keep on fighting for the love of his life. "Sometimes I don't understand how another can love her, is allowed to love her, since I love her so

Public International Law is a system of law

letter gets delivered. Why is this so easy, because there are certain international conventions that regulate postal services. E.g. traffic signs are almost the same everywhere, why? Because of certain int conventions that require the states to have more or less unified traffic signs. States apply international regulations to national regulations and they have to be in accordance with each other, the states can always specify these regulations. Therefore, PIL regulates people indirectly. Another unique feature: domestic law sources have a clear pyramid (top to bottom: constitution, laws, individual contracts, they cannot contradict each other) and all sources are written. In PIL there is no such hierarchy, but there are primary sources (all are equally important) and secondary sources and all are not written. Primary sources: written documents

Conditions of the productive animals in farms.

That is why there was conducted an inquiry to investigate the real conditions in Finnish farms. During the investigation 21 Finnish broiler farms, 60 pig factories and 20 egg were visited during a year-long period between 2006 and 2007. The size of the egg farms varied from thousands to hundreds of thousands of individuals. It was found out that in all the broiler farms there were dead and crippled birds. It can be said that most of these problems exict because there is not enough space for birds. They are kept in huge factory sheds, each containing 15,000-25,000 animals. It also means that individual care is impossible which also leads to the fact that those animals suffer day after day for all their life. In almost every pig farm there were many inadmissible problems. For example, pigs were kept in filthy confined pens, they had scars and injuries. Usually they were bodily harmed because of the lack of space

Constructivism theory

As a paradigm or worldview, constructivism (as a learning theory) states that learning is an active, contextualized process of constructing knowledge rather than acquiring it. Knowledge is constructed based on personal experiences and hypotheses of the environment. Learners continuously test these hypotheses through social negotiation. Each person has a different interpretation and construction of knowledge process. The learner is not a blank slate (tabula rasa) but brings past experiences and cultural factors to a situation The term ,,Constructivism" was first introduced to IR theory in 1989 by Nicholas Onuf. It was first considered as an interpretive meta-theory, a reflectivist approach. It emphasizes the social construction of world affairs as

product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture. The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later. Acute radiation syndrome was originally diagnosed in 237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up. Of these, 28 people died as a result of it within a few weeks of the accident. Nobody off-site suffered from acute radiation effects although a large proportion of childhood thyroid cancers diagnosed since the accident is likely to be due to intake of radioactive iodine fallout. Furthermore, large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, Russia and beyond were affected. The Chernobyl site and plant The Chernobyl Power Complex in Ukraine consisted of four nuclear reactors. Two

Forestry and the forest industry in Japan

Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan Today I'm going to do a presentation about a book called ,,Forestry and the Forest Industry in Japan", edited by Yoshiya Iwai. --------------------- Participants in private forestry are classified into six categories: forestry households; companies; shrines and temples; joint holdings; various groups and cooperatives; and habitual joint holdings. Except for shrines and temples, these groups manage forests to produce income. In general, these forests are not very large: the average forest area per establishment was 3.7 ha in 1990. Groups operating forests of less than 100 ha control 67% of the total area. Hence forests are not necessarily owned by a few large concerns. Private ownership of forestland was officially permitted after the Meiji restoration of 1868, which marked the end of feudalism. Previously, forestland was legally owned collectively for the use of local

History of english review questions and answers 2016

Grimm's law consists of three parts which form consecutive phases in the sense of a chain shift. [1] The phases are usually constructed as follows: - Proto-Indo-European voiceless stops change into voiceless fricatives. - Proto-Indo-European voiced stops become voiceless stops. - Proto-Indo-European voiced aspirated stops become voiced stops or fricatives (as allophones). Grimm himself already noticed that there were many words that had different consonants from what his law predicted. These exceptions defied linguists for a few decades, but eventually received explanation from Danish linguist Karl Verner in the form of Verner's law. VERNER'S LAW Verner's law, stated by Karl Verner in 1875, describes a historical sound change in the Proto- Germanic language whereby voiceless fricatives *f, *, *s, *h, *h, when immediately following an unstressed syllable in the same word, underwent voicing and became respectively the fricatives[1] *b, *d, *z, *g, *g. TheCodeBreakers

I have tried in this book to write a serious history of cryptology. It is primarily a report to the public on the important role that cryptology has played, but it may also orient cryptology with regard to its past and alert historians to the sub rosa influence of cryptanalysis. The book seeks to cover the entire history of cryptology. My goal has been twofold: to narrate the development of the various methods of making and breaking codes and ciphers, and to tell how these methods have affected men. When I began this book, I, like other well-informed amateurs, knew about all that had been published on the history of cryptology in books on the subject. How little we really knew! Neither we nor any professionals realized that many valuable articles lurked in scholarly journals, or had induced any cryptanalysts to tell their stories for publication, or had tapped the vast treasuries of documentary material,

Harmful effects on the eye caused by smart devices

every half an hour when using smart devices. Another disease which can be caused by the blue light radiation is Macular Degeneration Disease. Macula is located in retina and the image that is focused on the retina is the sharpest in macula. This is the reason why macula can not be damaged at all to have a correct visual acuity. Blue light damages the light-sensitive cells in retina. Macular degeneration disease can lead to permanent loss of eyesight. Both of these diseases can not be cured but it is possible to prevent them. The best prevention would be to avoid the use of smart devices. If there is a need to look at the screen for longer period the screen light should be adjusted to lower level. Another important thing is to blink the eyes to keep them moistured. Also, there are programs for computers and smartphones designed specifically to protect the eyes from blue light radiation. It is also possible to buy

The difference of Estonia and France schools

minutes. In my school there is 3 parallel classes. In my school there is two lunch breaks , one is for younger pupils and other one for pupils who are older. In my school you have more free time and school isn't that strict. The lunch in the school is okay, but if you live in this area the food is free for you. The teachers are more kind and more happy. Conclusion These two schools are very different to each other, but if I had to choose one of these schools I would choose Laagri Kool. I would choose Laagri Kool because the days aren't that long and you don't have a lot of homeworks to do. In Laagri Kool I like the most swimming lessons because In France I didn't have swimming lessons. But in my opinion the French lunch is better than Estonian one.

Manual For Bio-fuels

The hole technological chain from production to flue gas cleaning is brought to reader ´s. Also the energy policy and reguierment for users is shown. Properties of boifuels and peat In the boiler plants of Baltic Sea countries a wide range of various woodbased fuels are burned. To some extent also straw and other biomass based fuels are used. All these fuels are considered as renewables and according to the international agreement the CO2 emitted by the combustion of these fuels is not listed as a greenhouse gas. Wood, in particular the shell of wood cells, consists mainly from cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. Due to the high carbon and hydrogen content, the lignin has higher calorific value than cellulose and hemicellulose. In smaller quantities the wood contains also tar, resins and phenols that can cause fouling of heat transfer surfaces and stack interior with the deposits that are difficult to remove From the point of view of combustion
