Philosophy today

Philosophy Today The Great Divide Most contemporary philosophers follow one of two approaches "Continental" philosophy "Analytic" philosophy Continental philosophy is more influential on the European continent Analytic philosophy is predominant in the major research universities in the English-speaking world Analytic Philosophy Analytic philosophy developed from attempts in the early 20th century to make our concepts precise. The model of this procedure was science. Emphasis in contemporary analytic philosophy is on language and meaning, and meaning is understood as a relation between language and objective reality. Thus, understanding the structure of language is what reveals the structure of reality. Continental Philosophy At the same time that analytic philosophy was emerging, E

Õigusfilosoofia

1. What is the object of philosophical study? The object of philosophical study is being itself on an abstract level. Everything and nothing can be or exist. Things like colour, nature, material things like a table just are, but the meaning of being in be-ing in itself is unclear. Non Material things can also be or exist. If something is, then it is a being. But what exactly is this IS that we can see or on the opposite can not see? Therefore this is one of the fundamental questions of philosophy. 2. Can you reject solipsism? Solipsism (solus ipse) means nothing exists, therefore everything is an illusion outside of our own minds. I think that it is true that we know WE as in myself exists. But i can not for certain say that the person reading this exists although it might seems like it to me. I think that you really can’t reject solipsism on the whole because you do know that you exists, but can you for certain say that anybody else does

The Lean Startup summary

The Lean Startup summary “The Lean Startup” was published in September 2011 by Eric Ries. Due to the popularity of the lean startup philosophy, the book was highly anticipated prior to its release, and quickly became a #2 New York Times bestseller. The reason why I picked this book is because it was something that i found interesting and I thought I would really enjoy reading book about business. Eric Ries defines in this book a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or

An analysis of the problem of Political Power - essee

An analysis of the problem of Political Power Written by: Katre Kikkas Introduction It is said that in the political philosophy there are only two questions: ,,Who can have what?" and ,,Who will decide over it?". It is not exactly like that but it is quite close to the trough, to begin with. The first question includes material amenity's, and dividing rights and liberties.(Wolff, 1996) What is power? It is ability to influence others to do something they otherwise would not. Also, others can be affected with threats and force. (Kilp, 2010) Political power includes also right to force the others and to punish them if

Positivism

Kas 1 Philosophy does not produce propositions which are true or false; it merely clarifies the meaning of statements, showing some to be scientific, some to be mathematical and some (including most so-called philosophical statements) to be nonsensical. 4 ühiskonnal on õiguslik süsteem sõltub valitsuse teatud struktuuridest, mitte sellest kas see rahuldab õiguslikke ideaale, demokraatiat või seaduse reeglit. The Picture of Dorian Gray / Dorian Gray portree

Evaluation I think that the writing was effective and definately the author achieved his purpose. Many people told me before reading this book, that they have never read a better book in their life. After first couple of chapters I thought we just have different tastes in books, as I usually do have, but the book was quite interesting in the end. Most of all I liked the plot, I think it was very well written and the author had good imagination. Also, the philosophy in this book was worth reading. Usually when you are in the middle of the book, you can predict what happens in the end. With this book it was different. I did not think it would end like that, so the end was a bit surprising and interesting for me. On the other hand, I did not like the long weird descriptions that occured frequently. "Kui ta läks männipuust maalimislaua juurde, mis asetses kõrge kardinatega kaetud akna all, tõstis Dorian

Hariduse areng kaasaegses Eestis (J.Dewey)

1 Dewey, J. (1922). Democracy and education : an introduction to the philosophy of education. NY: Macmillan, pt 1 Juba 1916.a. väitis Dewey, et kuna elamine tähendab kasvamist, tähendab haridus tingimuste loomist edasisteks õpinguteks. Haridus ei tohiks lõppeda kooli lõpetamisega. Kooli ülesanne on kindlustada hariduse jätkamine läbi inimpotentsiaali avamise kasvuks.

Keskkonna kunst (Environmental art)

Marika Rodionova 11a What is that?  The term "environmental art" often encompasses "ecological" concerns but is not specific to them. It primarily celebrates an artist's connection with nature using natural materials. The concept is best understood in relationship to historic earth/Land art and the evolving field of ecological art. The field is interdisciplinary in the fact that environmental artists embrace ideas from science and philosophy. The types  Ephemeral - made to disappear or transform  Designed for a particular place - and can't be moved  Involves collaborations between artists and others, such as scientists, educators or community groups What is the point?  Informs and interprets nature and its processes, or educates us about environmental problems  Is concerned with environmental forces and materials, creating artworks affected

The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium

The First Years of the School: Reval Gymnasium In the beginning the school was upheld by the city of Tallinn and it’s knighthood. The school was meant for the sons of the noblemen and citizens. There were 4 professors and 2 colleagues. Students studied reading, writing, maths, theology, music, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, law, poetry, speech, geography, history and philosophy. Older students studied in Latin. Music was very important. There were four classes: quarta, tertia, secunda and prima, prima being the last and quarta the lowest grade. The head of school was a rector. For the first 15 years the rector was Heinrich Vulpius whose Gymnasium Laws (show the picture) were used for more than a century. The set of laws influenced the life of the students a lot. They designated how the students were supposed to act in the school and in their free time. (show the pic)

something new, to push yourself to a new limit and realise your dreams. You can do something that you've never tried before, like going to new places or take part of the adventure games. You can go to the gym or run every day 5 km. I like to go hiking in the woods or just take a daytrip to a city where I have never been before. The other possibility is to go for a mental challenge, like learning new language, or reading an interesting book. It is good challenge to take a science or philosophy book, something that is not so easy to read so you can be proud of yourself after finishing it. It is also possible to learn new skills such as cooking or dancing or making yourself a short film or learn a new computer program. Some people find yourself a job for a holiday and earn money. Sometimes all it takes to feel challenged is just to do old things differently or meet new people. Any type of challenge is possible as you look to push yourself to new limits. So next

Plato

PLATO My favorite and most interesting subject was about Plato. The fact that he is the worlds most known and widely read and studied philosophers is really interesting. I really like the metafors he used to compare every day life and problems. If he said that people are blind, he ment that people are dumb and havent learned things that life offers them. It is really amazing how Plato guessed so many years ago, what the future will bring. People havent changed, society and things around people have changed. Really great way to tell how people develop and gain experience, was through the metafor of ,,cave". Plato compared just born and small childer to people, who are in the beginning of the cave. Children are helpless just as the people who are in the dark, cold cave. Kids are also dumb and dont know how to deal with things, just like the people who are in the dark and cant see around them. Beowulf(poem and Grendel(book) comparison

human qualities. He is a grotesque monster who terrorizes a small community of Danish warriors. Therefore he can be called a flat character. In the book "Grendel" the protagonist and antagonist have been swapped. Gardner greatly alters the monster's characterization. In his novel, very little separates Grendel from his human counterparts: he has a high level of intelligence, as well as a human capacity for both emotion and philosophy. As the text is written in the first person point of view through Grendel's eyes, one gets a quite good picture of him. Unfortunately he is fighting with the inevitable. He keeps attacking and eating the Danish warriors simply because his instincts tell him to do so. He cannot help it; he is still a beast and not his own master. Beowulf undergoes as radical a transformation as Grendel does. The Beowulf of "Grendel" is uncannily superhuman. He is not only supremely strong, but also a

How much do you know about biology?

What is biology? Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.[1] Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Although biology in its modern form is a relatively recent development, sciences related to and included within it have been studied since ancient times. Natural philosophy was studied as early as the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Indian subcontinent, and China. Much of modern biology can be encompassed within five unifying principles: cell theory, evolution, genetics, homeostasis, and energy. Cell theory states that the cell is the fundamental unit of life, and that all living things are composed of one or more cells or the secreted products of those cells. Evolution is now used to explain the great variations of life found on Earth. Genes

B class Studying abroad These days studying abroad become more and more popular. In my opinion, people who are going study abroad have many advantages. However, it definitely has a negative sides. On the one hand, studying abroad is new experience and motivating, but on the other hand it can be distracting. Firstly, studying abroad give to people more experience and philosophy of life. Compared to the situation one hundred years ago, studying abroad is broadly spread all over the world. Moreover, travel is easier and convenient. In addition, studying abroad has become more and more popular. In my opinion it is the most useful way to learn a new language and you have advantage to be independent.

Kasutatud allikad: 5 Eesti keele instituut. Essee

There are over 6000 different languages in the world and each language comes with a different culture. Because of our ability to remember, humans are able to transmit information from generation to generation. Humans know their history, because we remember what we have created. Our world-view is more than what is seen to the eye. Homo sapiens is a developing species. Our body has changed and so has our mind. We understand concepts like time (past, present, future), religion, philosophy and moral behaviour. A human is curious, asks questions and finds answers. Unlike animals, we are conscious of our inner thoughts, desires and sensations and have the ability not to follow our instincts. The knowledge we have is used to make our world more controllable. The structure of our society is difficult and widely controlled by economy, politics, science and technology. Our lives do not depend on nature, we have created our own artificial world and we are proud to be able to control it

It was influenced by French and Latin. French brouht many words connected with goverment. Modern English eas greatly influenced by the English used in London and changed a great deal until the end of the 18th century. Many words were introduced from Greek and Latin to express new ideas, especially in science, medicine and philosophy. Nowadays 80 percent of the word-stock is foreign-born. So we can say that most world languages have contributed some words to English at some time, and the process is now being reversed. Purists of the languages are resisting the arrival of English in their vocabulary. The standard English oh today is known as BBC English. Few British people know much about grammar, since it is not usually taught in schools. Spelling and pronunciation seem to be the most difficult aspects of the English
