[email protected] ABSTRACT Scholarship on backpackers speculates some individuals may extend backpacking to a way of life. This article empirically explores this proposition using lifestyle consumption as its framing concept and conceptualises individuals who style their lives around the enduring practice of backpacking as ‘lifestyle travellers’. Ethnographic interviews with lifestyle travellers in India and Thailand offer an emic account of the practices, ideologies and social identity that characterise lifestyle travel as a distinctive subtype within backpacking. Departing from the drifter construct, which (re)constitutes this identity as socially deviant, the concept of lifestyle allows for a contemporary appraisal of these individuals’ patterns of meaningful consumption and wider insights into how ongoing mobility can lead to different ways of understanding identities and relating to place.

This means that more work per one dollar needs to be carried out in 2004 than needed to be carried out in 1960 to achieve the same results. The problem of stagnant productivity has been seen to be associated with the slow adoption of new and improved business practices and technologies. Construction has also been seen as a wasteful process. The Construction Industry Institute (CII) in co- operation with the Lean Construction Institute (2004) have estimated that there is up to 57% of non- value adding (NVA) effort or waste in our current business models, but in manufacturing the percentage is only 12%. Eighty percent of Pareto's garden peas were produced by 20% of the peapods he had planted, for example. In practice, the 80/20 principle is often much more disproportionate. To be perceived as uent in conversational Spanish, for example, you need an active vocabulary of approximately 2,500 high-frequency words. This will allow you to comprehend more than 95% of all conversation. To get to 98% comprehension would require at least ve years of practice instead of ve months. Doing the math, 2,500 words is a mere 2.5% of the estimated 100,000 words in the Spanish language. This means: 1. 2
