The euro in Estonia

Kati-Liis Karu 03.01.2011 The euro in Estonia Joining the European Union in 2004 made people in Estonia think about the changing of currency. We had almost six years to get used to the fact that the Estonian kroon is eventually going to end. In that time there was a lot of discussion about whether we should stick to the kroon or change our money to the euro. Lots of people were afraid that they lose their money during the period of transition - this belief was quite popular among people who still remember the time when the Russian rubles were changed into kroons and did lose much money. Luckily there haven't been any complaints yet. The reason I chose this political concern is its contradictoriness. I myself dislike the fact that the kroon is "leaving us" but I hope that in the long run it will seriously benefit us. According to Conjuncture Institute's research 39% of responden...

European Union

European Union Research Compose: x X School 2009/10 What is European Union? The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries. EU population is almost a half milliard European union stands for caring and fair community. All EU members are devoted to peace, democracy, human rights respecting and working together to spread these values all the world. History The beginning of EU might consider the year 1951, when European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) was constitute. Six countries joined with it for peace: Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, France and Germany. With that move, coal and steel industry were put under one organisation, so war was almost impossible between these six country. Cooperation in different areas improved, when in 25. Writting a summary

Writting a summary I read the following sections of the booklet „Europe. A journal for young people“. The booklet is listed in 7 sections:“ Europe in everday life“; „The European Union- what does this mean exactly?“; „How does the European Union work?“; „What exactly does the EU do?“; „Europe moves on_ the enlargement of the European Union“; „Europe and the wider world“ and „The future of Europe“. ‘Europe is somewhere else.’ This provocative statement opens the first chapter of „Europe. A journal for young people“. It is, of course, not true. As EU citizens, Europe is our home. It affects our lives in many areas. For example: money (euro is a common currency); flying has become much cheaper and safer; the police forces in the EU work closely together and European environmental protection lays down common standards. The second sections provides information about what does the European Union exactly means and when did 28 countries come ...

Benefits and drawbacks of the EU

Benefits and drawbacks of the EU Joining the European Union in 2004 has definitely brought some good and some bad things to Estonia in the past 9 years. As they say, you have to take the good with the bad. One positive thing that almost immediately pops into my head is the fact that being in the EU makes travelling so much easier between the member countries. So, along with the EU currency the euro, travelling in Europe has never been this easy. Now people don't even have to exchange their currency when travelling for example to Finland. But the simplification of travel could also bring some drawbacks. With leaving the country being so easy, many students who are looking for better opportunities abroad now have the chance to easily leave their homeland and maybe never come back. So Estonia is losing some of its valuable young people. And since the use of euro, prices have gone up a lot, and Estonians are...

Shopping in my life

Shopping in my life I like shopping with my friends. I buy clothes once a month with my friends, usually on Saturdays. Sometimes I shop with some member of my family for example with my mother. My mum can give me some good advises. When I buy new clothes, I look for quality clothes, which last longer. My tastes aren't very expensive and I'm not exactly into brand names. I usually buy clothes in Terranova. I spend quite a lot, but I always think carefully before I buy something because my family doesn't have much money to waste. I always go to the sales. When I need some money, I ask my dad or mum and they give me some. I don't have my own credit card but my dad has one. I love fashion clothes. I like jeans, sweat shirts and tops. I wear them every day at school and my favourite colours are pink and purple. I enjoy buying clothes very much. I always have fun shopping experience. Usually I spend a very ...

Churches in Tartu

Churches in Tartu There are about 29 churches in Tartu. Some of them look like modern churches, but a large part of them are old ones. Here is Tartu St. John’s or Jaani church. Tartu St. John's Church, which was built in the 14th century in Gothic style, is one of the oldest in Estonia; moreover, it is unique in Europe due to its many original terracotta sculptures. Numbering around a thousand, these 700- year old sculptures were largely hidden till the 1950's. The entrance to the church is free, but if you're looking for more than old sculptures, a view, then it costs. Access to the viewing platform costs 2 euro per adult and 1.50 euro per student. Rivalling St. John's Church as Tartu's most impressive, St. Peter's church, located over the river, is a red- bricked, pseudo-Gothic. It was built in 1884, allowing it to seat up to 3,000 people. The large altar painting was created by Estonia's artist, Johann Köler, in 1897. ...

European Union economic

European Union economic 9th May 1951, six Western-Europe countries (Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France and Germany) signed a treaty to run their heavy industries coal and steel under a common management. From this economic cooperation agreement, European Union has grown up. For today, the aim of this union has made 180º turn but the reason why more and more countries are joining it is still same to rise the economy. So how does it work? European Union is functioning like an independent country. It collects taxes to reach its objectives. Taxes are collected mainly from member countries GDP (1,1% of countries budget) but as well the import duties on good bought into EU. Also, every member country is paying 0,1%-0,33% of their VAT (value added tax). It is the way how EU gets its budget which is about 120 billion per year. Wooden pallets

SLAID 1 I am going to talk about wooden pallets. After I am finished I will answer any question you might have about my presentation. SLAID 2 Lets start with history. Wooden pallets date back to 1000 B.C. Egiptians used sheets of wood for transport and storage. These wooden sheets are called skids or sleads. They are still in use but their shape and durability has changed a lot. It was the during the early 1920’s, shortly after the modern forklift was invented, when skids evolved into pallets, revolutionizing the way merchandise was stored and transported. The new design of pallets allowed goods to be moved, stored and stacked with extraordinary speed and versatility. During the WWII the allied countries established a standard size pallet to ease shipment and transportation. This agreement skyrocketed the production and popularity of wooden pallets during the war After the war variety of sizes and designs were produced and used. The tra...

According to several folk tales, it is also in these valleys, woods and bogs that Old Nick found refuge.The great variety displayed in the nature is also reflected in the local cultural heritage. At the beginning of the 19th century growing linen spread and became the basis of the legendary wealth of Mulgi farms. The ancient barn-dwellings and decaying manor houses are the mute witnesses of those times. The riches and cultural heritage of Mulgimaa owe to the diligence and tenacity of the local people. Benefits of the EU The European Union was formed after the Second World War, because some political leaders believed that it was the only way to avoid conflicts in the future. There are many benefits in the EU, for example the EU has allowed citizen of the European Union to travel freely around Europe and millions EU citizens have moved to other EU country to work or to study. The EU has also given European countries a voice in world affairs. Smaller countries like Estonia and Latvia now can also get a word in world affairs, they are heard. Another advantage of the EU is that the EU has a strong common currency Euro. It makes travelling easier and also cheaper, because you can go on holiday and not have to worry about exchange money, therefore avoid high exchange charges. There is also peace amongst nations. The EU has managed to avoid conflicts and war and it makes smaller countries feel safe....

Does water consumption matter?

Does water consumption matter? 2 MINUTIT. I'm going to talk about water consumption and about the importance of the water. I've chosen this topic because water is our most important resource and I'm also very worried about how little there is left of it. At the moment a bottle of water costs less than an euro, but within the next 10 years the very same bottle may cost 5 to 10 euros, if we don't conserve and protect our fresh water supply. The thing is, we have enough sea water, but it's the freshwater we lack of. Water covers over 70% of the Earth, but just 3% of it is fresh and less than 1% is the water that is available and we can drink. The amount of freshwater is rapidly decreasing. The water we have now is all we will ever have, we cannot produce anymore. Moving on to the importance of water. There wouldn't be any life on Earth without water. Water cools the Earth and all plants, animals and humans need clean water to survi...

Milestones in Estonian History The Estonians are a Finno-Ugric people who came from the area near the Urals and the Volga and Oka rivers. They migrated westward to the Baltic shores some 5, 000 years ago. In the ninth century A.D. Viking ships invaded Estonia and the country became a vital link in the sea-trade between East and West. By the 12th century, the Arabian geographer al-Idrisi had placed the city on his maps. In the 13th century, Tallinn joined the Hanseatic League, the union of European commercial towns that stretched from London to Novgorod. Pärnu, Viljandi and Tartu were also members. Estonia became a vital link in the sea-trade between East and West. The oldest preserved book written in Estonian, a catechism, dates from 1535. Tartu University was established in 1632, on orders from Sweden's King Gustav II Adolf. Literacy spread. The Bible was translated into Estonian in 1739(pole vaja teada). A period of wars began in...

Pros and Cons of the European Union

Pros and Cons of the European Union The European Union is a unique partnership between 27 democratic countries in the Europe. The European Union has brought peace and economic prosperity to Europe. The European Union helps a lot of countries and many Europe countries wish to be EU members. But is it really useful to join into the union? The European Union has a lot of pros, but there are also some cons. On the one hand, the European Union gives benefits to Member States. Firstly, it is easy to travel from one Member State to another, live, study or even work there. Secondly, there is no need to change money because most Member States use Euro as the common currency. Thirdly, thanks to the European Union food products became safer and phone calls to European countries cheaper. Furthermore, if somebody has own company, it is easy for him to offer his products and services in other Union countries. Fin...

Estonia is divided into 15 counties which are divided in turn into 207 rural municipalities and 47 towns. The Republic of Estonia, the northernmost and smallest of the three Baltic countries, is located on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea in the north-east of Europe. Lying between East and West, it has served as junction of international trade routes for centuries. Moreover, Estonian neighbours are Russia and Latvia. Estonia is accessible, both from a logistical and social point of view - Tallinn is within 3 hours flight from major European capitals and the power distance is very low. In the west, the coast of Estonia is washed by the Baltic Sea. It is a land of great natural beauty with a long and varied history and rich culture. Ireland Ireland (Irish: Éire, Irish pronunciation:) is a country in north-western Europe. The modern sovereign state occupies about five-sixths of the island of Ireland, which was first partitioned on 3 May 1921. It is bordered by Northern Ireland--part of the United Kingdom--to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Irish Sea to the east and the Celtic Sea and St George's Channel to the South and South-East. The legal name of the state is simply "Ireland", but its legal description the Republic of Ireland is sometimes used to differentiate the state from the island. On 29 December 1937 Ireland became the successor-state to the Irish Free State, itself established on 6 December 1922. Ireland was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe and had high emigration. The protectionist economy was opened in the late 1950s and Ireland joined the European Communities (now the European Un...

===Väline kõvaketas===

Väline kõvaketas (inglise ,,external hard drive") on arvutiväline andmesäilitusseade.

---- __TOC__ ---- ===Välise kõvaketta ajalugu===

Esimesed välised kõvakettad tegid debüüdi hilistes 1950ndates. Neil oli 5MB vaba mälu ning nad käisid kaasas esimeste kommertslike IBMi süsteemi...

Essay about Chinese language taking over English

Will Chinese become more important than English in the near future? As David Graddol, a visiting professor in Hong Kong, says in "Will Chinese take over from English as the world's most important language?", he must often answer the questions concerning Chinese importance over English. Graddol states that China's economy is growing and it is already second in the world. In fact, it has become the largest exporter and first in energy consumption. In addition, China will presumably be the largest manufacturer soon. However, he questions whether Chinese language grows at the same pace as its economy. Graddol's teaching in Hong Kong starts with a lecture called "World Englishes". He notes that he wrote his book "The Future of English" in 1997, same year when China got Hong Kong back from Britain. Graddol reminds the students, how many things wasn't happened then: euro was not put in use, even Windows 98 was not ready. He h...

Leonardo Da Vinci

Leonardo Da Vinci We are making a presentation about Leonardo da Vinci. He was an Italian polymath and he had a wide range of interests including sculpture, science and painting. He is widely considered one of the greatest and most famous painters of all time. He was born on April 15th 1452 in a town called Vinci, that is also where he got his name from. Very little is known about his early life, but he spent his first five years with his mother and then moved together with his father. Leonardo had 12 half-siblings who were all much younger than him. Leonardo received an informal education in Latin, geometry and mathematics. At the age of 14 he joined a workshop held by an artist known as Verrocchio. There he painted his painting `'Baptism of Christ'', which first gained notoriety. Leonardo Da Vinci died in 1519 at the age of 67. Leonardo was and is primarily known as a painter. Among his other works, `'Mona Lisa'' is the most famou...

Life in Estonia through the eyes of an economics student

Life in Estonia through the eyes of an economics student I have been studying economics for a few months now and I would not say that my point of view on life in Estonia has changed. There are some things I recently started to look on differently but I am not sure is it because of TUT or not. Through my entire life I have seen Estonia as a strong and fast growing country which is also a fact because Estonian economy was one of the fastest growing in the world until 2006 with growth rates even exceeding 10% annually. I find it being quite impressive. There are some fields which Estonia can fill with supplies by itself. We are nearly energy independent country, supplying over 90% of our electricity need with locally mined oil shale. Estonia has also an alternative energy sources such as wood and peat. I could call myself earth friendly because I love walking around the forest and breading some fresh air but I do not li...

Mari Süda BBA-I Kas vabakaubandus rikastab riiki?
