The games were held every four years. It is also presumed that such competitions pleased the spirits of the dead and were organized as part of funeral ceremonies for important people. Later games became part of religious festivals of honouring the gods but mostly they honoured the king of the gods Zeus. The ancient stadium in Olympia could accommodate more than 40,000 spectators. The only event in the first 13 games was the stadion which is a running-race of 192 metres. As the years passed, longer running races and other types of competition became a part of the games wrestling, the pentathlon, boxing and chariot-racing. The pentathlon was a combination of long jump, running, discus, and javelin throwing and wrestling. The games were so important that truce was called out between the fighting city-states
The City of London History The City of London occupies one square mile in the middle of the capital. It once made up the entire town of London, surrounded by the wall first built by the Romans. The Roman Londinium grew up on the northern side of the "London Bridge" in the past. Products such as olive oil, wines and fruit were brought by ships from different parts of the Roman Empire and unloaded onto wooden quays along the river. In AD 61 the native Celtic Iceni tribe, led by Queen Boudicca, rose up against The Romans. They burnt Londinium to the ground but Roman armies eventually defeated Boudicca. The city was rebuilt and was gradually surrounded with a wall of stone and brick which lasted for many centuries. During the archeological excavations in 1954 the Roman Temple of Mithras was revealed. It was a pagan temple dedicated to the Persian Sun-god. At the 1908 London Olympics the marathon course had been set as usual at 26 miles, in tribute to the distance between Athens and the location of the great battle of Marathon, where the Athenians defended their freedom. The marathon was to be run from a starting line in the magnificent avenue of trees in Windsor Castle grounds to White City Stadium in the west of London. Unfortunately the day before the race, King Edward VII had such a bad cold that his doctor warned him not to go out. Undaunted, the organizers improvised.
