Durability of concrete In this presentation I'm focusing on the durability of concrete. First I'll give a brief overview of concrete, we have to know what does it actually means and where is it used? (slide) Basically concrete is a construction material composed of cement, aggregate (generally gravel, limestone, or granite, plus a fine aggregate such as sand) also water, and chemical admixtures.(slide) Concrete is used to make pavements, architectural structures, foundations, roads, bridges, marine- and parking structures, brick/block walls and footings for gates, fences and so forth. Mainly it is used because of its high durability and availability, but also because it is cheaper than to use wood for example. Concrete is used more than any other man-made material in the world.(slide) Moving on, the durability of concrete can be defined as the ability to remain serviceable for at

Dam types Embankment dams · Embankment dams are the most common type of dam in use today. · Materials used for embankment dams include natural soil or rock · The ability of an embankment dam to resist the reservoir water pressure is primarily a result of the mass weight, type and strength of the materials from which the dam is made. They need good rock the ground stopping the water for their foundations.
Our house consists a lot of different elements and components what I try to describe in my essay. The most important part of construction is foundation because it keeps buildings in one piece. My house has a strip foundation which is taken 1,5m below the ground to protect the structure against ground movement and damages. Due to the fact that foundation transfer the dead and imposed loads of the structure onto the ground it must be very solid and strong. Our foundation is made of pre cast concrete blocks which has a damp-proof course made of mastics on external side. There are sleeper wall after the concrete blocks to support the basement floor slabs. Next primary elements are the walls. My house has four crosswalls which have load bearing and enclosing role. There are also a lot of internal division walls with dividing role. The crosswalls are made of lightweight concrete blocks. Behind the blocks are moisture barrier which is fixed with brick tie

basic principles and plans of Tallinn's fortifications as approved by Nikolai II in 1911; the plan foresaw the construction of two identical and adjacent hangar complexes. At the beginning of March in 1916, Colonel Aleksandr Jaron, who was responsible for the construction works, sent 11 local and foreign companies calls for proposals for designing these hangars, which were then modestly referred to as reinforced concrete sheds. The deadlines were quite short due to the ongoing World War and bids were already expected by the end of March. Construction was set to start during the period of April 15th and June 1st, 1916. However, things did not go so smoothly and the successful project was chosen in the course of negotiations held on April 29th. The winning project was submitted by a Danish company, Christiani & Nielsen (project manager
Since the beginning of time, the goal of bridge builders has been to create as wide a span as possible which is commodious, firm, and occasionally delightful. Spanning greater distances is a distinct measure of engineering prowess. In terms of engineering, bridges are discussed by design or type (beam, arch, truss, cantilever, suspension, or moveable); length (usually expressed in terms of clear or overall span); and materials (stone, wood, cast and wrought iron, and what we use today - concrete and steel). The purpose of this contextual essay is to provide parameters of value and significance so that we can focus our attention on those bridges - globally - that best illustrate the history of bridge building, and to encourage their preservation. What is a World Heritage bridge? The World Heritage Committee states that to be of World Heritage status a monument or site must be of outstanding universal value. It must illustrate or interpret the

When it was announced in 1995 that the two operating reactors at Chernobyl would be closed by 2000, a memorandum of understanding was signed by Ukraine and G7 nations to progress this, but its implementation was delayed. Alternative generating capacity was needed, either gas-fired or nuclear. Construction of these was halted in 1989 but then resumed, and both reactors came on line late in 2004. Chernobyl today Chernobyl unit 4 is now enclosed in a large concrete shelter which was built quickly to allow continuing operation of the other reactors. However, the structure is neither strong nor durable. Some 200 tonnes of highly radioactive material still remains deep within it.A new concrete and steel coffin is to be constructed around the radioactive reactor.

) It remained an upper-class part of town for much of the 17th-century, but by Victorian times the working class had taken over. Due to its proximity to the docks, it suffered plenty of punishing raids in the Blitz German bombs demolished a third of the buildings. When the armistice came in 1945 the area north of St. Paul's resembled a square mile of rubble. The high cost of reconstruction work delayed the diggers for a decade, and it wasn't completed until 1982. The resulting wash of concrete has been much derided down the years, but the original plans were of considerable note. They planned 2,000 apartments for 6,500 people some in tower blocks over 400-foot high (the tallest in Europe at the time). They also included a Museum of London, the Guildhall School of Music, and a fully-featured arts centre. Very few of the finished buildings are pleasing to the eye the complex is deathly grey and cramped, and it's all too easy to get lost in a dreary world of concrete constructs

thougths and understanding a bit more of his point of view, I could almost believe, that Karl Marx saw the world through his own perfection. Seemed to me, that Wright thought about other parties and societies as well and saw the whole thing from a much bigger perspective, which ultimately, makes him differ from Karl Marx. Wright also saw difference from the obedience relationship between classes, he distinguished domination and exploiting rather than just upper and lower class, which have very concrete aspects that define them. In my opinion, Wright did not think the same because he did see the society in a much larger context and bigger picture, whereas the middle class was dealing with life instead of revolutionizing, which inevitably causes inequality. Some people have business knowledge and others have skills, which necessarily makes one getting exploited by the other. What he wanted to say was, that the proletariat does not have to be against the upper class.

Moore often refined the final full plaster shape and added surface marks before casting. Moore produced at least three significant examples of architectural sculpture during his career. In 1928, despite his own self-described "extreme reservations", he accepted his first public commission for West Wind for the London Underground Building at 55 Broadway in London, joining the company of Jacob Epstein and Eric Gill. In 1952, he completed a four- part concrete screen for the Time-Life Building in New Bond Street, London, and in 1955 Moore turned to his first and only work in carved brick, "Wall Relief no. 1" at the Bouwcentrum in Rotterdam. The brick relief was sculptured with 16,000 bricks by two Dutch bricklayers. Even after he passed away, August 31, 1986 in Herforshire, Moore's work is still greatly celebrated, collected, exhibited, auctioned and showcased in museums and other prominent public places near and far.

differential between each set of drive wheels, and they need one between the front and the back wheels as well, because the front wheels travel a different distance through a turn than the rear wheels ● Part-time four-wheel-drive systems don't have a differential between the front and rear wheels; instead, they are locked together so that the front and rear wheels have to turn at the same average speed. This is why these vehicles are hard to turn on concrete when the four-wheel-drive system is engaged.
Energy Agency meeting in Vienna, Austria, in August 1986. Elimination of the consequences • Emergency crews responding to the accident used helicopters to pour sand and boron on the reactor debris. The sand was to stop the fire and additional releases of radioactive material; the boron was to prevent additional nuclear reactions. A few weeks after the accident, the crews completely covered the damaged unit in a temporary concrete structure, called the “sarcophagus,” to limit further release of radioactive material. • After the accident, officials closed off the area within 30 kilometers (18 miles) of the plant, except for persons with official business at the plant and those people evaluating and dealing with the consequences of the accident and operating the undamaged reactors. The Soviet (and later on, Russian) government evacuated about 115,000 people

The Romans came to Britain nearly 2000 years ago and changed our country. The Romans lived in Rome, a city in the centre of the country of Italy .One day, some years before Jesus Christ was born, the Romans came to Britain. First invasion - Caesar's first raid In August 55 B.C. (55 years before Jesus was born) the Roman general, emperor Julius Caesar invaded Britain. He took with him two Roman legions. After winning several battles against the Britons in South-East England he returned to France. Second invasion - Caesar's second raid In 54 B.C. Julius Caesar came to Britain again landing at Walmer near Deal in Kent. This time he brought with him five legions (30,000 foot soldiers) and 2,000 cavalrymen (horse riders). This time the Romans crossed the River Thames. After more fighting, the British tribes promised to pay tribute to Rome and were then left in peace for nearly a century. Third and final invasion In 43 A.D. (43 years after Je...
Women also wear short- sleeved polos and tennis-skirts. Sometimes they might use tennis dresses or just simple shorts. Players often use sweat bands on their wrists to keep their hands dry as well. Although the game can be played in a variety of shoes, specialized tennis shoes have wide, flat soles for stability and a built-up front structure to avoid excess wear. Tennis is played on a rectangular, flat surface, usually grass, clay, a hardcourt of concrete and/or asphalt and occasionally carpet (indoor). In most professional play and some amateur competition, there is an officiating head judge or chair umpire, who sits in a raised chair to one side of the court. The umpire has absolute authority to make factual determinations. The umpire may be assisted by line judges, who determine whether the ball has landed within the required part of the court and who also call foot faults

He attaches to this understanding of himself no sense of honor, nor does he expect any praise for his service. Even after he has been severely wounded, he discourages Rinaldi from pursuing medals of distinction for him. Time and again, through conversations with men like the priest, Ettore Moretti, and Gino, Henry distances himself from such abstract notions as faith, honor, and patriotism. Concepts such as these mean nothing to him beside such concrete facts of war as the names of the cities in which he has fought and the numbers of decimated streets. Against this bleak backdrop, Henry's reaction to Catherine Barkley is rather astonishing. The reader understands why Henry responds to the game that Catherine proposes--why he pledges his love to a woman he barely knows: like Rinaldi, he hopes for a night's simple pleasures. But an active sex drive does not explain why Henry returns
But the city still contains magnificent architecture from the past as well as some dazzling new structures. London's bridges Thirtyfive bridges span the Thames in Greater London. The oldest is London Bridge. Which was originally made of wood? In 1209 it was replaced by a stone bridge with shops and houses along its sides. This was followed by a granite bridge in 1831 and the present concrete bridge in 1973. The Tower of London The Tower of London contains 20 towers. The White Tower at its centre, built by William the Conqueror, is the oldest. The Tower of London is home to the Crown Jewels, and is where two of Henry VIII's wives were beheaded. Westminster's palaces The Palace of Westminster was built by Edward the Confessor and rebuilt by William the Conqueror
You should have a solid, level surface that will restrict the car from rolling. If you are near a road, park as far from traffic as possible and turn on your emergency flashers (hazard lights). Avoid soft ground and hills. Apply the parking brake and put car into "Park" position. If you have a standard transmission, put your vehicle in first or reverse. Place a heavy object (e.g., rock, concrete, spare wheel, etc.) in front of the front and back tires. Take out the spare tire and the jack. Place the jack under the frame near the tire that you are going to change. Ensure that the jack is in contact with the metal portion of your car's frame Many cars have molded plastic along the bottom. If you don't place the jack in the right spot, it will crack the plastic when you start lifting
Designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus of OMA/LMN, this building was awarded a Platinum Award in 2005 for innovation and engineering in its "structural solutions" by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Washington. While most traditional towers employ a proportioned column grid, the Central Library’s structure uses asymmetrical placement of perimeter and interior trusses, in places cantilevering out to bear on opposing sloped steel box columns. The concrete core and the concrete foundation walls on three sides act to tame the twist that the off-set platforms naturally impose, while the exterior steel diamond grid system behind the glass "net" serves as the building's seismic support system (Figure 3). 24 Figure 3.
