All the communities living in the country are encouraged to remember their origins and hold their own ethnic events and national festivals. Cultural diversity makes Canada even more interesting. In spite of this, in recent years there is a strong movement in French-speaking Quebec to become an independent country.

Our ovens, freezers, and homes can be kept at any temperature we choose, a luxury that wasn't possible 100 years ago. Keeping our homes comfortable uses a lot of energy. Over 40 percent of the average home's energy consumption is used for heating. Another 20 percent is used for water heating, 8 percent for cooling rooms, and 5 percent for refrigeration. Almost one-fourth of the energy used in homes is used for lighting and appliances. Lighting is essential to a modern society. Lights have revolutionized the way we live, work, and play. Picture 2.2
Parts of Canada are very mountainous and the tallest mountain in Canada is the Yukon's Mount Logan, which is 6050 meters tall. Canada has many mountain ranges. In the east there are the Appalachians, Torngats and Laurentias. In the western region there are the Rocky, Coastal and Mackenzie ranges and Mount St. Elias and the Pelly Mountains in the northern regions. Canada has about two million lakes and they cover about 7.6% of Canada's land. The biggest lakes in order by their surface are Lake Huron, Lake Great Bear, Lake Superior, Lake Great Slave (which is also the deepest), Lake Winnipeg, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. There are also a lot of rivers in Canada. The longest river is the Mackenzie River which is 4241 kilometers long. It runs through the Northwest Territories. PLATINUM The platinum effect is found in some lines of Silver Persian/Chinchilla Longhair. In 1986/7, Cheryl Bennett reported in The Silver and Golden Persian Newsletter (ACFA) that one of her shaded silver females (Kelley Lane Contessa of WeANDE) had changed from pure silver to pale golden. Contessa’s parents were a shaded golden and a shaded silver; these were full siblings. At 10 – 12 months of age, Contessa began to “tarnish” i.e. show cream/reddish patches and by 3 years of age she was entirely pale golden. She produced a number of Silver Persians without tarnish, but she failed to produce any offspring when mated to a golden sire.
