Estonian Language

Estonian Language Estonian laguage(previously called ,,ground language" by estonians in old days) belongs into Finno-Ugric language group. It is spoken by about 1.1 million people, mostly in Estonia. Some people have said Estonian reminds them of the sound of babbling water. Some non-Estonian people I know just say it sounds weird. Estonian language is closely related to Finnish. Originally they were a single language but they parted about 5000 years ago. Most of Estonian vocabulary is borrowed from other languages like German ang English. Very few of Estonian words are originally Estonian. For example, suu (mouth), vesi (water) and ema (mother). One thing that features Estonian is that unlike any other language, Estonian has three degrees of phoneme lenght: short, long and overlong. Pronouncing the phoneme differently can change the meaning of the word. There are many different dialects in Estonian langu...

Homereading - body language

Body language Body language means communication with the movement or position of the human body. It can be conscious or unconscious. It is something that is noticed by everybody but is not always given enough attention. We sometimes ignore it and try to hide behind words, but we should never forget that we cannot fool everyone! Children react to body language because they experience the world through intuition. The same can be true for adults when feelings are involved. People who are in bad shape emotionally will often place great importance in it. In fact, they often pick up the smallest hint of a lapse in attention in the person they are speaking to. And they frequently jump to the conclusion that they are boring or a nuisance - thus compounding any sense of depression or poor self-esteem. A way to learn the secrets of body language is to watch television with the sound turned off and...

English language history

Old English ( 450-1100 AD) The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100. Middle English (1100-1500) In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy invaded England. The new conquerors brought with them a kind of French and there was a period where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. Modern English Early Modern English (1500-1800) Towards the end of Middle English the change in pronunciation started, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact with many peoples from around the world and many new words and phras...

English is the only foreign language worth learning

English is the only foreign language worth learning Many people think that English is the only language what is worth learning. I strongly disagree. First of all, there is so many countries , which have their own language. I do not see a problem talking in multiple languages. It only helps us develop and communicate with so many other language speaking people. Intercourse is what connects us, but to communicate with others we need to understand one another. What is more, we do not need to be so similar. Speaking some other language makes us more intriguing. Foreign languages are like crayons, all in different colours. Imagine if all the crayons would be in the same colour. If we paint a picture, we need a variety of colours to make the picture interesting. That is why we need to learn not only English, but many others languages too. Of course, there are people who argue that studying English is the only foreign langu...

The huge vocabulary of the language is due to the free admission of words from other language. Old English had several inflections to show singular and plural, tense and person, but over the centuries words have been simpified. The loss of inflections had made English a very flexible lnguage. Learning foreign language - Why is it necessary?

Learning foreign language - Why is it necessary? I think learning different languages are very important if you want to see world and people abroad. It makes your life easier if you can learn some larger language than Estonian. Estonian is very little language and example is quite hard to get god job if you cannot speak some world language. This is very positive that we can learn at least two foreign language in the school. Very important is than we get practice beside school lessons. Some things like watching films and listening music make us understand this language better. In the future I would like to learn french and Swedish but first I should learn to speak Russian and English correctly. If we travel, we anyway communicate with different people and it's easier to make contact than we can speak language very well. And communicating with different people make our world-view larger. If ...

History of the English language

Suppletion Present in languages of different families. Present in Old, Middle and Modern English, though the general tendency is towards more regularity/iconicity so the number of suppletive forms has decreased. In the text: goon to go wenden - to turn Gan was suppletive in Old English, past form: eode.Eode was supplanted by went (past form of wenden) at the end of the Middle English period. To wend has survived in Modern English in phrases such as to wend one's way, we wended homewards (ironic usage). Thus: suppletivity- suppletion different parts of one and the same paradigm come from what were originally different paradigms (different words with close meanings or words in different but close dialects).Suppletion embraces verbs, adjectives, nouns. A method of language sampling kokkuvõte

Keeltevaheline uurimus on üks põhilisi viise keeleliste faktide leidmise...

Class essaay. "Music is the universal language"

Class essay. Music is the Universal Language. Music is everywhere around us.. it is in the wind when it blows.. birds, who are loudly screaming now. The noise of cars.. the noise of humans, expecialli their laughing makes me a little happier everytime when I hear it. There're such beautiful voices. Sometimes we just must stand quiet in center on those voices, and catch their message. Music tells us stories wich were never known. Nowadays young people hear music on MP3. They're like in their own reality. Yes it's great to feel that, but a little bit strange, because when somebody wants to ask something at the bus stop, they can't hear anything. Thats sad. I listen to my iPod too, but sometimes it disturbes me, and then I want to hear the naturalmusic after hearing artificial music, which is just imitted that nature by humans. Essay about Chinese language taking over English

Will Chinese become more important than English in the near future? As David Graddol, a visiting professor in Hong Kong, says in "Will Chinese take over from English as the world's most important language?", he must often answer the questions concerning Chinese importance over English. Graddol states that China's economy is growing and it is already second in the world. In fact, it has become the largest exporter and first in energy consumption. In addition, China will presumably be the largest manufacturer soon. However, he questions whether Chinese language grows at the same pace as its economy. Graddol's teaching in Hong Kong starts with a lecture called "World Englishes". He notes that he wrote his book "The Future of English" in 1997, same year when China got Hong Kong back from Britain. Graddol reminds the students, how many things wasn't happened then: euro was not put in use, even Windows 98 was not ready. He h...

Why do we learn the English language?

Why we learn the english language? It is necessary to learn foreign languages. That´s why the pupils have such subjects as a foreign language at school. Everybody knows his own language, but it is useful to know foreign languages. I learn English, because I understand that I can use it. For example, if I go to England I shall be able to speak English there. If I go to the USA, I shall speak English too, because English is used not only in England, but also in other parts of the world. I leran English because I want to read foreign literature in the original. I know and like such English as Ch.Dickens, M.Twain, L.Carroll and others. I understand that I must learn English. If I know English well, shall be able to go to the library and take books by English and American writers in the original. I like to travel. When a world loses a language it loses a unique treasure

When a world loses a language, it loses a unique treasure There are more than 7000 languages in the world and it is said that more than 50 % of the languages will be extinct by the end of the century. A language dies in every 2 weeks. So what will be lost when a language dies? Much of human knowledge hasn't been written down and it lives in people's memories. In fact, there are even laguages that haven't been written down. In the olden days people use to tell stories. They didn't write them down, just told or sang them to others, who passed them on the same way and so they spread from generation to generation. Now if a language dies, the folklore dies with it. So we will also lose our ancestors knowledge, in what they believed in, what they valued. We will lose the myths and legends, how the world or a certain place was made. In fairytales people learn about virtues, how to make a difference between right and...

English is the only foreign language worth learning

English is the only foreign language worth learning English is quite far-spread language all over the world. Lots of people believe that English is only foreign language what is need to be learned. I strongly agree with this view for a number of reasons. First of all, nowadays English is the most widely spoken and undrestood language in the business world. International companys and other organsations uses English as their communication language. What is more, when students would like to go studying abroad then English is necessery and sufficient. Usually the studies are in English and being on abroad usually you can speak in English. Furthermore, travelling in foreign country is not a problem when you can speak and undrestand a little bit English.
