The history of movies starts in early 1900s. American inventor Thomas Edison , began making short motion pictures at the turn of the century . In 1903, a movie called “The Great Train Robbery” was the first one to tell the whole story. Movies were silent at this time and orchestras played music in theathers, so movies would have sound.
The Jazz Singer in 1927 was the first movie to have sound. A year later, 1928, a funny animation movie “Steamboat willie” was produced.
1920-s were also the rise of hollywood . The majority of film making took place in the hollywood area. Hollywood was the initial birth place of the studios. Studios there were separated into 3 different groups. The biggest one was the Big Five . It included studios like ee WB. 20th Century Fox and Paramount.
Movies were fun. Everyone had something to talk about. People would go to see the movies in big groups and have fun. They started to assume that it was normal to be entertained. Most americans went to see the movies at least once a week. The movie industry became a big business. People might not know the names of government officials but they knew the name s of every leading actor and actress .
It also changed people’s thinking . Young americans tried to copy what they saw in the movies. They dreamed about faraway places and a different kind of life. THE STORY (do houses look like in Desperate Housewives and do women look like in Baywatch).
In addition the actors and actresses at this time were told to practice public behavior. Where to eat. How to dress , what they could be seen doing.
Made people more equal. Rich and poor families saw the same movies. The children all shared the same wish to be like movie stars .
Culture and westernization. The culture in big towns moved over to rural areas . The nation exported it-s culture through movies . Movies were actually key to the westernization of the world as 90% of all movies then were made in hollywood/us.
Information travelled faster. At some point the movie companies wanted to expand and do movies further away . People needed to communicate more. Another thing that I read was that world news back then were shown in the beginning at every movie.

Film industry at the prosperity time

with stock market crash and the great depression in 1929. The jobs were lost because of overall industrialization and the usage of conveyering method. People who committed suicide was the highest rate ever. The rich wives of businessmen were trying to sell back their golden accesories, but the gold was no longer taken back, because it had lost its value. Still, all this had no impact on the filming industry. The Last dollars was spent on movies, no matter how poor they were. Even Big movietheatres were built. Ppl escaped the harsh reality by waching movies. When everything else was collapsing, Hollywood got bigger

Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was one of the greatest and widely loved silent movie stars. From "Easy Street" (1917) to "Modern Times" (1936), he made many of the funniest and most popular films of his time. He was best known for his character, the naive and lovable Little Tramp. The Little Tramp, a well meaning man in a raggedy suit with cane, always found himself wobbling into awkward situations and miraculously wobbling away. More than any other figure, it is this kind-hearted character that we associate with the time before the talkies. Born in London in 1889, Chaplin first visited America with a theater company in 1907. Appearing as "Billy" in the play "Sherlock Holmes", the young Chaplin toured the country twice. On his second tour, he met Mack Sennett and was signed to Keystone Studios to act in films. In 1914 Chaplin made his first one-reeler, "Making a Living". That same year he made thirty-four more short films, including "Caught in a Cabaret", "Caught in the Rain", "The Face on the Bar-R

Movie review

Dear John movie review Dear John is a romantic drama. It was released on February 5, 2010. The film was directed by Lasse Hallström and it is a movie made from a book from Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name. The key of the movie were love, war, loss, forgiveness. I liked the actors very much. The actors were Amanda Seyfried as Savannah and Channing Tatum as John. I liked Seyfried before I saw that movie, because she can play different roles and I believe her. She is a really good actor, not like most of the Hollywood actors. Tatum I saw acting the first time but I liked him too. They were really good together. Seyfried played a rich Southern girl who doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs and is spending her spring rebuilding houses for the poor people. Tatum plays a guy from Army who meets Savannah in the beach when Savannah lost her bag into the sea and John goes after that bag. I liked all the scenes of the movie. They were really well mad

Film Studies - The Black Dahlia

In Film Noir morality is less clear (than in Western, for example, where there are simply to sides: good vs evil). There exists a feeling of paranoia about society, as we can clearly see in this film. At first, there is not explanation, why the horrible murder has taken place, at the end, the reasons, why come out, but they are mad and frightening. Sex is the other big theme in Noir. As the years have gone by, the more the audience sees it. In the early Noir movies, like ``The Big Sleep`` there were only clues, in ``The Black Dahlia`` there is one sex scene and characters are talking about it straightly, it is not a hidden part in Noir anymore. For example there is a part of the dialogue in closing scene, Madeline: ``You`d rather fuck me than kill me.`` The film was made in 2006, however, set in 1947. Because of this, houses and design of the rooms depict the time. There are certain behaviour rules, formality. In the closing

Sciuscià. i I am doing my presentation about Vittorio de Sica movie „Siuscia“in English the „Shoeshine.“ This movie was released in 1946 and is often referred to as the first masterpiece of de Sica. I chose this movie because I really enjoyed de Sicas „Ladri di biciclette“ and also, I often enjoy watching old movies. The action of this movie takes place on the streets of Rome after World War II and the characters usually speak Italian but sometimes, they bring in some English. This movie has also received an Oscar for the best foreign movie in 1947. „Sciuscia“ talks about two boys – Giuseppe Filippucci and Pasquale Maggi, who are in desperate need of getting a horse. Unfortunately, the do not have lots of money because they live off their income from shining shoes
