hazardous environment. Many plants have silvery or glossy leaves, allowing them to reflect more radiant energy. These plants often have an unfavourable odor or taste. Semiarid plants include: Creosote bush, bur sage, white thorn, cat claw, mesquite, brittle bushes, lyciums, and jujube. Animals In hot and dry deserts the animals include small nocturnal (active at night) carnivores. The dominant animals are burrowers and kangaroo rats. There are also insects, arachnids, reptiles and birds. The animals stay inactive in protected hideaways during the hot day and come out to forage at dusk, dawn or at night, when the desert is cooler. In semiarid deserts many animals find protection in underground burrows where they are insulated from both heat and aridity. These animals include mammals such as the kangaroo rats, rabbits, and skunks; insects like grasshoppers and ants; reptiles are represented by lizards and snakes; and birds such as burrowing owls and the

for the plant. This is called photosynthesis. When the weather gets cold, broad leaves are not good for the plant, as they lose too much moisture and get damaged. So the trees cut off the water supply to the leaves and seal off the leaf stems where they join onto the tree trunks. The leaves are not able to produce the chlorophyll that makes them green. The leaves become yellow, red or gold before they dry up and fall off the trees. Animals: A wide variety of mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles can be found in the deciduous forest biome. Mammals that can be found include bears, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, wood mice, and deer. Animals like bobcats, elk, bison, mountain lions, timberwolves, and coyotes used to be found in the deciduous forests, but have been hunted down by humans and almost wiped out. Melting snow in spring and rain during summer provide water for streams and ponds. Many water birds, insects, and fishes are found in this biome, along with amphibians such as frogs

Animals shrinking in the heat This article was published in Daily mail, on 17 October 2011. The author of the article is Tamara Cohen. The article discusses about animals who are shrinking due to global warming. Scientist have warned, that animals such as sheep, deer, birds and reptiles are shrinking due to climate change. Researchers say warmer temperatures over the past few years have made some animals adapt to need less body fat to survive while others are struggling for food. In the next few decades, some types of mammals, fish, birds and plants are getting smaller and evolve into miniature versions of what they are today. This could force some creatures, that people eat, to become extinct,

is short and most plants reproduce by budding and division rather than sexually by flowering. There are no deep root systems in the vegetation of the tundra; however, there are a wide variety of plants that are able to resist the cold climate. The fauna is also diverse. Animals such as mammals and birds also have additional insulation from fat. Many animals hibernate during the winter because food is not abundant. Another alternative is to migrate south in the winter, like birds do. Reptiles and amphibians are few or absent because of the extremely cold temperatures. Because of constant migration, the population continually oscillates. Alpine tundra is located on mountains throughout the world at high altitude where trees cannot grow. The growing season is approximately 180 days. The nighttime temperature is usually below freezing. Unlike the arctic tundra, the soil in the alpine is well drained. The plants are very similar to those of the arctic ones.

Australia has over 155 million hectares of native forest, about 80 per cent of which are eucalypt. Animal life Australia is a continent sized museum of ancient animals. Anteater and platypus are the two of the strangest animals in the world. They are really reptile mammals. They have hair like cats and dogs, but they lay shelled eggs like snakes and turtles. And they are found only in Australia. Another group of Australian mammals, the marsupials, are less like reptiles than the anteater and the platypus, but they are not highly developed mammals either. The kangaroo and the wombat are marsupials. Their young are born before they are fully developed. The kangaroo is born after being only seven weeks inside it's mother. It is completely blind and only an inch or an inch and a half long. It crawls into its mother's pouch and attaches itself to a nipple there. There it stays for almost three months, when it begins to stick its head out
accumulation leading to tainting). Marine life may also be affected by clean-up operations or indirectly through physical damage to the habitats in which plants and animals live. The main threat posed to living resources by the persistent residues of spilled oils and water-in- oil emulsions ("mousse") is one of physical smothering. The animals and plants most at risk are those that could come into contact with a contaminated sea surface. Marine mammals and reptiles; birds that feed by diving or form flocks on the sea; marine life on shorelines; and animals and plants in mariculture facilities. The most toxic components in oil tend to be those lost rapidly through evaporation when oil is spilt. Because of this, lethal concentrations of toxic components leading to large scale mortalities of marine life are relatively rare, localised and short-lived. Sub-lethal effects that
8. Animals and plantlife Canada has wide variety of animals that can be found in the mountains, plains, in rivers and lakes and even in people's back-yards. Some of the biggest and widespread are bears. Cougars are the largest cats in Canada. Wolves can be heard but not as easily seen as their cousin the coyote. Bison are now exclusively farmed but goats and sheep can still be seen in the wild. Moose, deer and caribou are also widespread as are the otter and beaver. Reptiles, amphibians and a large selection of snakes also call Canada home. Squirrels, chipmunks, racoons and skunks often found in and around cities. Some of the most common animals to spot in Canada are birds, including Canada Geese, Bald Eagles and the Great Blue Heron. Canada's varied climates allow for a large selection of spiders, bugs and insect while the countless rivers, lakes and 3 oceans are home to dolphins, whales, salmon, sharks and many other species of fish and sealife.
They are reptilelike mammals. They have hair like cats and dogs but they lay shelled eggs like snakes and turtles. Their babies are born from eggs but drink milk from their mothers. The ecidna (spiny anteater) eats ants which it catches with its long fat tongue. The platypus has a wide bill like a duck and a wide flat tail. It swims well but it can only stay under water for a few minutes. First it shuts its ears and eyes. Another group of Australian mammals, the marsupials, are less like reptiles than the spiny anteater and the platypus, but they are not highly developed mammals either. The kangaroo is born after seven weeks inside its mother. It is completly blind and only an inch or an inch a half long. It crawls into its mother's pouch and attaches itself to a nipple there. There it stays almost three months, when it begins to stick its head out. It is six months old before it is big and strong to leave the pouch. The biggest of the fifty diffrent kinds is the red kangaroo
then he escaped by hiding on a ship which sailed to France. He entered a monastery and wanted to study religion. He wanted to become a free man and a missionary. He became a priest, then a bishop. He returned to Ireland to bring Christianity to people. The local pagan priests used all their magic on him and they were very powerful. Once they poisoned his wine but Patrick removed the poison miraculously and drank the wine. One of the legends says that St. Patrick got rid of all the reptiles by beating his drum.
