Kafka's Hunger Artist

Kafka's Hunger Artist Kafka, in his masterpiece "The Hunger Artist," suggests that humans can never satisfy their desires. This is illustrated through the metaphorical hunger artist for whom nourishment is not being nourished at all. The viewing public's interest is derived from their desire to see the hunger artist cheating, but to view this would put an end to that desire. Finally, Kafka presents this idea while the artist is at the circus and describing when people wish to view the starved man. The hunger artist's nourishment is spiritual. The man only wishes to be honored by the public. As he continuously spirals downward in his health, he looses all forms of material nourishment. As the days go on, there is conflict between the artist and the audience, as they do not believe him honest in

The Hunger games

Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake, Avril Lavinge etc. Plot  Years before the start of the series, the thirteen districts attempted to start a revolution against the Capitol. The Capitol won, District 13 was destroyed and, as punishment, an annual televised death match called The Hunger Games was created by the Capitol. Two participants, one male and one female, known as tributes, between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen randomly in a "reaping" from each district. Children may volunteer as a tribute instead of selection by ballot. They are taken to an arena and fight until only one is left alive. Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who volunteers for the

Famine esitlus

Famine Carmen Kaljulaid 11 a World Hunger, Poverty & Famine: How They Fit Together 923 million people across the world are hungry. In essence, hunger is the most extreme form of poverty, where individuals or families cannot afford to meet their most basic need for food. Hunger manifests itself in many ways other than starvation and famine. Most poor people who battle hunger deal with chronic undernourishment and vitamin or mineral deficiencies, which result in stunted growth, weakness and heightened susceptibility to illness. Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger daily are usually poor and often lack the social safety nets we enjoy, such as soup kitchens, food stamps, and job training programs. When a family that lives in a poor country cannot grow enough food or earn enough money to buy

Why students dropp out of college

There are advantages as well as disadvantages of getting international aid. International aid could help in improving the country's position in the world. International aid can contribute to fighting global poverty, hunger and help get access to medical care. It can also provide to solve problems like terrorism, rehabilitation and many other problems. However, receiving countries could misuse international aid. Money could use to fund illegal activities and the strengthening of armed forces. International aid should be used very wisely and judiciously, only then can we eliminate poverty and hunger and other problems in the world.

Modern issues

1st and 2nd world countries may not or don't have that problem at all, but access to a clean water is a serious issue for 3rd world countries. 3rd world countries might have an access to water, but not to clean water. It is important to have a clean water, because there are a lot of dangerous diseases in dirty water. It's a problem, which needs to be solved as quickly as possible. Another problem is an access to good food. About 21,000 people die every day of hunger, or hunger-related causes. This is one person every four seconds. Most of them are children. We already grow enough food for 10 billion people, so the problem isn't the food itself, but the transport and access. Every life is important, and to not pay attention to such topics is just selfish. There are countless number of issues that need to be solved. We have to use all the rights given to us, and use them in positive way.

Britain and the sea

Britain and the sea The sea has always attracted people. It is beautiful, it offers them food, and it carries them to different places round the world. Both countries lost many people in the long series of battles. Seaman suffering from illnesses and hunger died in the streets of coastal villages even several months after returning to land. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the number of ships increased more than four times as trade between Britain and other countries was growing. The ships were small and they were needed in great numbers to carry all the cargoes. Hundreds of then were wrecked off the coasts of the British Isles.

Letter

Start with the fact that Estonia grown food is stored, processed and routed school canteen supply chain for its intended purpose. This approach solves three important problems. The menu could be selective in how many different drinks. Since I myself can not drink milk, and in particular it could be a range of more buttermilk. Students could have a greater choice of food than what they want and what is not. Because some students can not eat everything and they should then suffer from hunger throughout the school day. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Yours faithfully .....

and friends. Secondly, the consequences of a war are horrible. Terrible memories would not leave people. Every time they recall those events, they suffer again because no one is able to make somebody happy fighting. Thirdly, a lot of people die. Families lose their breadwinners and children become orphans. Moreover, some of them may become homeless, it takes lots of time to rehabilitate and restore cities. Hunger and illnesses make innocent people unhappy. All in all, despite the fact that we live in the XXI century, we have not understood yet that not any purpose of war can justify people's lives and that nobody can win a war.

The Major Environmental Problems In Estonia

mindlessly buy things they do not even need. According to that there is overconsumption which also causes huge waste dumps. Lastly there is abuse of the natural resources in Estonia. While wasting paper, people do not think that it is made of both wood and water which should be saved. Therefore there is over-intensive logging and the area of woods is decreasing. To sum up there are no such environmental problems in Estonia such as widespread hunger and poverty whilst there are some smaller problems in comparison with the Third World countries. Nobody can win a war

Nobody can win a war. Historically people have always been at war. Everyone had their own reason for a war. One thought, that getting of the worldwide power is the goal of his life, another wanted to get more money, territory or even some kind of revenge. Bur war brings with it human's deaths, innocent victims, hunger, illnesses, violence, distractions etc. Is this worth fighting? On the one hand, there are some people who are able to kill houndreds of innocent victims to make his goal realized, because he has a power and he is allowed to do everything he wants. In addition to that, sometimes people use a war just to justify their revenge, they just use the power, they have, to satisfy own ambitions to feel a win's spirit. So they become winners, but it is only formally.

Shields toob selle näitlikustamiseks suure hulga tunnuseid: teadlik antikunsti võtete kasutus sh "toores", tsenseerimata, toimetamata, amatöörlik suhe teosesse, juhuslikkus, avatus, refleksiivsus. Lühidalt öeldes audentsus, ehedus esteetilise juhtmõttena. Kuid selle kaudu saab küsida ka seda, kuidas uues kultuurisituatsioonis "reaalsus" muutub fiktsiooniks. Kuidas reaalsust struktureeritakse, jutustatakse (reality-showd, teleuudised, meedia laiemalt).

Charlie Chaplini elulugu

character that wore baggy pants, tight frock coat, large shoes on the wrong feet and a black derby hat. By his thirteenth film, Caught in the Rain (1914), Chaplin began to direct his own films. Chaplin now slowed the pace of his films, reduced the number of visual jokes but increased the time spent on each one. Chaplin placed the emphasis on the character rather than slapstick events. The themes of his films became more serious and reflected his childhood experiences of poverty, hunger and loneliness. Chaplin's work revolutionized film comedy and turned it into an art form. Chaplin's films were highly successful and became a household name throughout the world. Charles Chaplin died in Switzerland on 25th December, 1977.

The Crucial Problems of the World

The light from the Sun reaches us and after that the light reflexes from the Earth's surface back to the space, but thanks to the pollution, it absorbs and reflexes back to us again, causing global warming. The third problem is the fastly growing population. There are now more than 7 milliard people in the world and the number is still getting bigger. That leads us to the overcrowded cities, poverty and hunger. The recession causes the unemployment and different disagreements. To prevent that and much more, what may come in the future, we must think more about the environment and the people and animals, whose living in it. There are many campaigns about the recycling and reproducing, like "Teeme ära" and many others. We have to sort the packages and bottles we buy and help ourselves in that way, because we don't want our children to grow up in pollution and bad environment.

Irish Potato Famine

Irish Potato Famine During the 19th century, 2/3 of the Irish people lived in very poor conditions under the British rule they had to work for upper-class English landlords, who never set foot in Ireland. The work was to raise crop for a tiny piece of land (most of tenants had less than an acre) where they could grow food (potatoes) for their own families. Potatoes were grown because they have all the necessary vitamins in them and only the potatoes would suffice to feed a family when grown on such tiny holdings. In 1845 a fungus, called Phytophthora infestans (commonly known as potato blight) attacked the potato crop and destroyed half of it. Yet, this was not a catastrophe and people would pray for the next years' crop to be a proper one but it was even worse and on top of that, the winter of 1846 was the "severest in living memory". The crop, which previously had provided 60% of the nations' food...

There ar totally different ideas on what constitutes world peace. Some folks suppose it's the resolution of conflict that may induce world peace. Estonian National Cuisine

re a d a c k B Bl The word ,,bread" came to Estonian from Germanic languages. Traditional black bread spread in Estonia in the second century. In a household people usually baked bread on Saturdays. Depending on the size of the family, they usually made 6-10 loaves of bread. One loaf of bread usually weighed about 2-5 kg. Beliefs and habits If a piece of bread was dropped, it had to be picked up and given a kiss so that hunger would not come to the house. A loaf of bread was never put on a table upside crust down. That would predict a family member's death. It was not allowed to lay a loaf of bread with its cut side to the door, because then the house would run out of bread. Eating the crusty end of bread would give a girl nice breasts. Warm bread was supposed to be broken not cut. Christmas bread Christmas bread had to be different from everyday bread. It was made of rye or wheat flour and it was

George Orwell "Animal Farm" essay - "Human nature exposed in the novel"

Human nature exposed in G.Orwell's ,,Animal Farm" Humans are the most deceitful animals in the World. Even if we do not want to confess it to ourselves, we have to accept the fact that humans constantly change their ways of thinking and acting to make the World a better place to live in for themselves. Our lives are fulfilled with lies we enter to our or someone else's mind. A lot of it is connected to people's constant need of power and control. "Animal Farm" is a book that reverberates that kind of human nature through politics, dictatorship and power, but in nowadays' World this kind of behaviour occurs also in our everyday life, not only politics. First of all humans are in a constant need of power. The essence of the power does not even matter as long as they have some kind of control. It could be control over some group, over a person and his mind, actions and thoughts or just over a certain situation where we wa...

The Count of Monte Cristo

Although Dantes seems very naïve at the beginning of the story, he becomes very sharp during his stay in jail. By the amount of detail and preciseness in his plans, Dantes as the Count can be looked as a mastermind. Much of Dantes' knowledge comes from the old, thought to be crazy, priest named Faria that taught him in prison. Faria was also responsible for much of Dantes character change due to his great power of reasoning. Because Faria had given him a treasure and a hunger for vengeance, Dantes was willing and had enough money and power to carry out revenge on his enemies. Faria is the first person that opens up Dantes' eyes so that he can see who his enemies really are. When Dantes first meets Faria, he is overjoyed because he hasn't seen another person, other than the guard, for years. Faria reaches Dantes by means of a tunnel that took him 3 years to dig with his makeshift tools

Victorian life - Briti ajalugu

around 1905. It was at this point that the militant campaign began with the formation of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). The WSPU was quite radical in their behaviour, as they wanted to get the right to vote as quickly as possible. To illustrate their more militant stance, they adopted the slogan "Deeds, not words". Many of the suffragettes were imprisoned for their violent and vandalizing actions. In prison, they started a hunger strike and were force fed by the guards. The authorities' policy of force feeding won the suffragettes great sympathy from the public. The government passed a law that allowed the release of prisoners who were about to die from malnourishment. A new suffrage bill was introduced in 1910, but growing impatient, the WSPU launched a heightened campaign of protest in 1912 on the basis of targeting property and avoiding violence against any person

To a Skylark

various things. Wordsworth's poem on the other hand concentrates on how he wishes to join the bird and be as good as the lark. He gives forth his main idea strictly without wasting so much time on glorifying the bird itself. Also another difference is that Shelly wishes to be as good as the Skylark because he wishes that others listened to his work. Wordsworth doesn't express the need to be heard. He wishes to be good to create something jolly but he doesn't express his hunger for attention. The third difference that I noticed was that for Shelly the bird is something mystical and unseen. He could only hear the singing of the bird. In my opinion it added a great deal to the bird's value as it seemed supernatural. In Wordsworth's poem the bird was visible and the poet saw in front of him. Comparison: similarities There were also some interesting similarities in these poems in addition to the fact that they were both about the Skylark.

career preference, although he enjoys volunteering at a variety of different jobs. Though he is a well-behaved citizen and a good student, Jonas is different: he has pale eyes, while most people in his community have dark eyes, and he has unusual powers of perception. Sometimes objects "change" when he looks at them. He does not know it yet, but he alone in his community can perceive flashes of color; for everyone else, the world is as devoid of color as it is of pain, hunger, and inconvenience. 8. Why is December so important for children in the community? We learn that every December, all of the children in the community are promoted to the next age group--all four-year-old children become Fives, regardless of the time of year when they were actually born. We also learn that fifty children are born every year. The ceremonies are different for each age group. At the Ceremony of One newchildren, who have spent their first

Cold war

The American policy was to restrict the Soviet Union to her existing position in Europe and not let it move any more. Some of the anti-communist countries were against it because it didn't help the countries under the Soviet Union in any way but nothing more could have been done. America also helped these countries with military aid and so on. c)The Marshall plan also known as the European Recovery plan (ERP) was made by General Geoge Marshall who anounced his sceme to fight hunger, poverty and chaos in Europe. Supplies of food , fuel, machinery and raw materials (which were valued up to 13 billion) were sent to Europe. Success of this plan engouraged the USA to suggest a Point Four programme of technical aid to less- developed countries outside Europe. The USSR then responed with a similar plan called the Molotov Plan. d) The Berlin Airliftstarted when the Russians stopped givin West Germany things and stopped all connections with West Germany

Essay on water pollution, global warming, acid rain, deforestation, intensive farming

Intensive farming Advantages ✔ One of the major advantages of this farming technique is that the crop yield is high. ✔ It helps the farmer to easily supervise and monitor the land and protect his livestock from being hurt or hounded by dangerous wild animals. ✔ With the introduction of intensive farming, farm produce, such as vegetables, fruits, and poultry products have become less expensive. It also aids in solving the worldwide hunger problems to a great extent. This means that common people can now afford a balanced and nutritious diet. ✔ Many opine that organic food can be afforded only by the elite strata of the society. Apart from that, large farming spaces are required to cultivate organic crops using natural manure. However, with the introduction of intensive farming, the space, equipment, and other requirements for farming are less and more economical.

Toompea. From the 13th century onwards these became separate towns with different communities, both with their own interests and laws. Tallinn grew rapidly and had developed into a well-known trading centre by the 15th, century. A century later its population of 7,000-8,000 made it one of the biggest cities in northern Europe. Unfortunately, prosperity did not last long due to the weakening of the Hanseatic League, epidemics, hunger and wars. Sweden finally managed to take control of the whole of Estonia in 1629. Though hard times continued, the period that followed is known as the good old Swedish era': foundations were laid for the Estonian school system, the privileges of the nobility were curtailed, local peasants were granted the right to own property, and so on. Meanwhile, different countries fought for domination in the Baltic region. Russia started the Northern War in 1700

He then returns to chase his sister once again. This eternal chase makes the Sun alternate in the sky with the Moon. Anningan is the name of the Moon god of some of the Inuit people that live in Greenland. The word "Inuit" means "people." Anningan continually chases his sister, Malina, the Sun goddess, across the sky. During this chase, he forgets to eat, and he gets much thinner. This is symbolic of the phases of the moon, particularly the crescent. To satisfy his hunger, he disappears for three days each month (new moon) and then returns full (gibbous) to chase his sister all over again. Malina wants to stay far away from her bad brother. That is why they rise and set at different times. Pilt The mask above is a shaman mask. Shamans would wear masks such as this one during healing ceremonies. Addiction and drugs

more regularly. Secondly some people start smoking because there's a rumour saying that it's slimming. And another reason may be that it may relieve stress. After three or four cigarettes you get addicted to it because of nicotine. It is a drug that stimulates the brain. When the level of nicotine falls in your blood and you're a regular smoker, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms, such as craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger, difficulty with concentration, or just feeling awful. These symptoms are relieved by the next cigarette. Most smokers need to smoke regularly to feel normal and to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms. So once you start smoking it is very hard to quit. But why is smoking so harmful? Cigarettes have tar in them which contains many chemicals. These deposit in the lungs and can get into the blood vessels and are carried to other parts of the body. US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

The colony may well have perished had it not been for the leadership of John Smith. He imposed strict discipline on the colonists. "Work or starve" was his motto, and each colonist was required to spend four hours per day farming. A new boatload of colonists and supplies sank off the coast of Bermuda on its way to help the hungry settlement. The winter of 1609-10, known as the "Starving Time," may have been the worst of all. Disease and hunger ravaged Jamestown. Two desperate colonists were tied to posts and left to starve as punishment for raiding the colonies' stores. One colonist even took to cannibalism, eating his own wife. The fate of the venture was precarious. Yet still more colonists arrived, and their numbers included women. Despite the introduction of tobacco cultivation, the colony was a failure as a financial venture. The king declared the Virginia Company bankrupt in 1624.
