John Harvey Kellogg

Stanley (18241893). John lived with two sisters during childhood. By 1860, the family had moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where his father set up a broom factory. John later worked as a printer's devil in a Battle Creek publishing house. With his brother, Will Keith Kellogg, they started the Sanitas Food Company to produce their whole grain cereals around 1897, a time when the standard breakfast for the wealthy was eggs and meat, while the poor ate porridge, farina, gruel, and other boiled grains. John and Will later argued over the recipe for the cereals (Will wanted to add sugar to the flakes), so in 1906 Will started his own company, the Battle Creek Toasted Corn Flake Company, which eventually became the Kellogg Company, triggering a decades-long feud. John then formed the Battle Creek Food Company to develop and market soy products. (John did not invent the concept of the dry breakfast cereal. That honor belongs to Dr. James

Fast food

Fifth level Why is it so popular? You can buy fast food just about anywhere that sells food and snacks. Vending machines, drive- thru restaurants, and 24 hour convenience stores are probably the most common places to find fast food. It's so popular because for under $5.00 you can usually get a filling meal. However, fast food is inexpensive because it is usually made with cheaper ingredients such as high fat meat, refined grains, and added sugar and fats, instead of nutritious foods such as lean meats, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Is fast food bad? There is no such thing as a "bad" food. All foods can fit into a healthy meal plan. It's true that fast food is usually high in fat, calories, cholesterol and sodium, but eating fast food every once in a while is not going to cause you problems. If you eat too much fast food over a long period of time, though, it can lead to health problems like high blood pressure,

It was discovered in 1938 in a fungus that grows on rye and other grains. LSD is one of the strongest hallucinogenic drugs. It can disrupt the normal functioning of your brain, possibly for the short term, or possibly for life. By disturbing the normal functioning of the brain, LSD distorts visual judgment, sensations, moods and feelings. And these changes can quickly become frightening. Some users experience terrifying thoughts, feelings of despair, fear of losing control, fear of insanity or even death

Agriculture Agriculture has a significant position in the province's economy. The province has over three million head of cattle and Alberta beef has a healthy worldwide market. Nearly one half of all Canadian beef is produced in Alberta. Alberta is one of the prime producers of plains buffalo (bison) for the consumer market. Sheep for wool and mutton are also raised. Wheat is primary farm crop, with Alberta leading the provinces in spring wheat production; other grains are also prominent. Much of the farming is dryland farming, often with fallow seasons interspersed with cultivation. Continuous cropping (in which there is no fallow season) is gradually becoming a more common mode of production because of increased profits and a reduction of soil erosion. Across the province, the once common grain elevator is slowly being lost as rail lines are decreasing; farmers typically truck the grain to central points.

It can be used as a double crop after early harvested small grains or vegetables, an emergency crop, or in areas with a season too short to produce mature corn for silage. Forage yields of sunflower are generally less than corn when a full growing season is available. In one study, sunflower dry matter yields ranged from 2.0 to 3.0 ton/acre compared with 3.1 to 3.8 ton/acre for corn. Moisture content of sunflower at maturity is usually high (80 to 90%) and would require wilting before ensiling.

exports to the United States. About 2.3% of the Finnish GDP comes from exports to the United States. Except for timber and several minerals, Finland depends on imported raw materials, energy, and some components for its manufactured products. Farms tend to be small, but farmers own sizable timber stands that are harvested for supplementary income in winter. The country's main agricultural products are dairy, meat, and grains. Finland's EU accession has accelerated the process of restructuring and downsizing of this sector. (www.state.gov) 5 The people The `Nordic` image of a person with blond hair and blue eyes is quite a rare sight on Finalnd; most of the population is dark-haired. This is because of the Finns` ancestry: the people who moved into the southwestern corner of today`s Finland from Estonia via the

Probably the most famous event is the annual Melbourne Cup which is a horse race eagerly followed by Australians and attended by racing fans from throughout the world. 12 . Economy The Australian economy is dominated by its services sector, yet it is the agricultural and mining sectors that account for 65% of its exports. Rich in natural resources, Australia is a major exporter of agricultural products, particularly grains and wool, and minerals, including various metals, coal, and natural gas. A downturn in world commodity prices can thus have a large impact on the economy. Agriculture Agriculture in Australia is a major industry, 402 000 people are employed in agriculture and agriculture related services. Until the late 1950s agriculture accounted for up to 80% of Australia's export earnings. That percentage has fallen with diversification of the economy.

intake, lower cholesterol intake and higher fiber intake. Vegan and vegetarian populations also tend to have lower body mass indexes and lower blood pressure which are also positively correlated with a reduced risk of heart disease. However, it is necessary to pay close attention to the diet and to keep it balanced. It’s important to eat an abundance of nutritious whole foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. And to supplement when needed. Vegetarian and vegan diets can be made unhealthy in the absence of whole foods. The same thing goes for the standard diet. Vegans and vegetarians can be just as unhealthy as meat eaters who eat junk food daily. Nowadays there are many options and replacement products for meat and dairy based products, and they’re highly processed in most cases. A vegan can just as easily die of coronary artery disease as a meat eater

South Poles. Picture 9.1. Wind energy Today, wind energy is mainly used to generate electricity. Wind is called a renewable energy source because the wind will blow as long as the sun shines. 9.1 The History of Wind Since ancient times, people have harnessed the winds energy. Over 5,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians used wind to sail ships on the Nile River. Later, people built windmills to grind wheat and other grains. The earliest known windmills were in Persia (Iran). These early windmills looked like large paddle wheels. Centuries later, the people of Holland improved the basic design of the windmill. They gave it propeller-type blades, still made with sails. Holland is famous for its windmills. American colonists used windmills to grind wheat and corn, to pump water, and to cut wood at sawmills. As late as the 1920s, Americans used small windmills to generate

1.1.3. Key Macroeconomic indicators For Key Macroeconomic indicators and forecasts please refer to Appendix 1. Ukraine's economic sectors are diverse, but in need of new capital and investments to compete with sectors in the West. The country's major export categories include: ferrous and non-ferrous metals, steel products and steel structures; chemical products (including fertilizers; plastics and rubber); agricultural products and food (mainly grains, cereals; food processing and packaging). As seen from the list above, Ukrainian economy is strongly dependent on various commodities and as result of price fluctuations of those commodities. Perhaps, the only commodity group, which is in long-run rather immune (not 100% though) to cyclical changes are agricultural products. Taking into account growing population worldwide and gradual income growth, particularly in food importing Asia and Africa, it's rather safe assumption

Meat isn't necessary, but it does make the job easier. Eggs and beans are su cient to lose weight, but I would avoid most milk products. Cottage cheese is an exception. It doesn't interrupt things, and the high casein content appears to facilitate fat-loss. "You're doing it again," I muttered. His eyes opened wide with surprise. "What?" "Dazzling me," I admitted, trying to concentrate as I looked back at him. "Oh." He frowned. "It's not your fault," I sighed. "You can't help it." "Are you going to answer the question?" I looked down. "Yes." "Yes, you are going to answer, or yes, you really think that?" He was irritated again. "Yes, I really think that." I kept my eyes down on the table, my eyes tracing the pattern of the faux wood grains printed on the laminate. The silence dragged on. I stubbornly refused to be the first to break it this time, fighting hard against the temptation to peek at his expression. Finally he spoke, voice velvet soft. "You're wrong." I glanced up to see that his eyes were gentle. "You can't know that," I disagreed in a whisper. I shook my head in doubt, though my heart throbbed at his words and I wanted so badly to believe them. T h e reversal may be almost imperceptible at first, trickling bit by bit like grains of sand in an hourglass. For example, in the classic screwball comedy Topper, a man who has been rigid, disciplined, and meek his entire life enters into a polarized relationship with two playful ghosts, the Kirbys, who are loose, free, and rebellious. At first Cosmo Topper is driven to even greater rigidity to counteract the w i l d energy of the Kirbys. But this extreme position is unnatural and inherently unstable. Under

After commencement in February of 1914, he attended graduate school, managing to fall in love twice, once with a brunette, once with the blonde daughter of a movie-house owner. While he was there, a wealthy textile merchant, George Fabyan, who maintained laboratories in acoustics, chemistry, genetics, and cryp- tology (to try to prove that Bacon wrote Shakespeare's plays) on his 500- acre estate, Riverbank, at Geneva, Illinois, decided that he needed a geneticist to improve the grains and livestock on his farm. He applied to Cornell for a "would-be-er," not an "as-is-er," and hired Friedman, to begin June 1, 1915. Fabyan was a man of no formal education but of intelligence and energy. He had a great desire to be "somebody," and that desire motivated his subsidizing the Baconian studies: proof of this revolutionary thesis would cover its patron as well as its actual discoverers with glory. He himself read little, but he absorbed enough
