ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

The Russians annexed the Estonian territory from Sweden after the Great Northern War in 1721 by the Treaty of Nystad. After the fall of Tsarist Russia in 1917, Estonians fought for their independence, and in 1918 the Republic of Estonia was established and endured until 1940. In the summer of that year the Soviet Union occupied all three Baltic states. As a result of the deep inner crisis within the Soviet Empire it became possible to re-establish the Estonian Republic in August 1991. A month later Estonia joined the United Nations. In 1997 the population reached 1.462 million; from this Estonians total 65% (950,124) and other nationalities 35%. The capital Tallinn, mentioned for the first time in 1154, has a population of 434,800 (1995). Other important towns are Tartu, Kohtla-Järve, Narva and Pärnu. Estonia is a developed industrial and agricultural country. In industrial output: oil shale, electrical energy, mineral fertilisers, paper, chemicals, building material, and

GETTING TO KNOW THE TOEFL

You must work quickly and efficiently. Here is a sample passage. YOU WILL SEE: A lens has one or more curved surfaces that refract or bend, light rays passing through it to form an image on a surface beyond the lens. Examples of such surfaces are the retina of the eye or a movie screen. The distance from the lens to the focal plane is known as focal length. In cameras, telescopes, and similar devices, the lens is turned on a screw-thread mounting to adjust the focal length. This action allows focusing of images of objects at various distances. In the human eye, focal length is adjusted by muscles that alter the lens curvature. Light rays of different colors are bent by varying degrees as they pass through a curved surface. This causes a distortion of the image, known as chromatic aberration. In cameras, sharp images are obtained by arranging two or more lenses so that the aberration of one cancels out the aberration of another. Such an arrangement

Leanly built, dark-haired, and green-eyed, Cary was a man who rarely looked anything less than absolutely gorgeous on any day of his life. I might have resented that if he hadn't been the dearest person on earth to me. "I'm not talking about a bender," he insisted. "Just a glass of wine or two. We can hit a happy hour and be in by eight." "I don't know if I'll make it back in time." I gestured at my yoga pants and fitted workout tank. "After I time the walk to work, I'm going to hit the gym." "Walk fast, work out faster." Cary's perfectly executed arched brow made me laugh. I fully expected his million-dollar face to appear on billboards and fashion magazines all over the world one day. No matter his expression, he was a knockout. "How about tomorrow after work?" I offered as a substitute. "If I make it through the day, that'll be worth celebrating." "Deal. I'm breaking in the new kitchen for dinner." "Uh..

Cats

A non-agouti amber Norwegian forest Cat resembles a silver tabby, but has a distinctive black nose and black paw-pads instead of the pink/reddish nose with black outlining found on conventional silver tabbies. The photo below shows a non-agouti amber. According to Rui Pacheco, although this cat is clearly non-agouti because of the black nose, he has the phenotype of a silver shaded. Rui's theory is that the amber gene invalidates the action on the non-agouti gene; wide-banding will further lighten the base colour giving a very pale cat with black nose and paws. Amber cats are basically black cats with a colour modifier that affects the deposition of pigment on the hair shaft, but not the skin colour. That is why in non-agouti cats the nose remains black and in agouti cats it remains pink. PLATINUM The platinum effect is found in some lines of Silver Persian/Chinchilla Longhair. In 1986/7,

grave. Through buffoonery, utter mismanagement and downright stealing of the wealth of the masses, these leaders have so impoverished Africa that we are now nothing but a beggar continent. We beg for everything; we are more dependent on our colonial masters than when we received our independence from them. Africa owes the West more money than we and our generations to come can pay. I arrived in America in December of 1967as an official of what we believed was going to be a dynamic African nation – the young Republic of Biafra. But Biafra was defeated and Nigeria remained one, as a giant of Africa. In the last 32 years, I have watched with horror and outright helplessness as the downward slide of the African race continues to escalate. But rather than address the problems, we resort to blaming the Caucasians, Asians and others for our misfortune. We are not men enough to accept responsibility for our actions

The Scout movement is to encourage a sense of adventure and of responsibility for others among young people. The programme of training is planned to develop intelligence and practical skills, to promote health and a sense of service. Scout training is complementary to the ordinary education. Scouts train in mapping, signalling, first aid and all the skills that arise from camping and similar outdoor activities. British scouts take part in international scout meetings, which are held approximately every four years. The membership in this or that youth organization is not compulsory in Great Britain. But everyone can find the activity he likes most. Climate in Great Britain The British Isles which are surrounded by the ocean have an insular climate.

programmes. On 4 October 1957, an announcement by the Soviet Union took the world by surprise. `Sputnik', the first artificial satellite, which literally means "travelling companion" had been launched and was in orbit around the Earth. `Sputnik' was small, no bigger in fact than a football, and compared to today's technology, it was very primitive. All it could do was to bleep. But its impact was enormous. After its launch, things began to happen quickly. Less than a month later it was followed by `Sputnik 2' which carried a dog Laika into orbit. The USA sent its first satellite, `Explorer 1', into space early the next year. The next step, putting a man in space followed in 1961 when the Russian pilot called Yuri Gagarin orbited the Earth in `Vostok 1'. In 1961, President Kennedy announced that America would begin a programme to put a man on the Moon. Use the Internet to get answers to the following questions:

George II, who was a staunch Catholic and did not allow freedom of religion to Protestants in New England. Voltaire was among the first to denounce Christianity and other organized religions as mere ploys to support monarchy. What emerged was Deism, which was more or less a new religion that considered reason its foundation. In Deism, there is no interference by a deity, and man controls his own destiny. These ideas stirred the masses into action, as the people dreamed of carving their own futures. Adopted by the Founding Fathers, Enlightenment ideals became the vision for modernday America, where these ideologies are deeply rooted in the nation. The Enlightenment was important America because it provided the philosophical basis of the American Revolution. The Revolution was more than just a protest against English authority; as it turned out, the American Revolution provided a blueprint for the organization of a democratic society
