Weather forecast. Millions of people tune into the weather forecast each evening on television. Most of them imagine that the presenter does little more than arrive at the studio a few minutes before the broadcast, read the weather, and then go home. In fact, this image is far from the truth. The two-minute bulletin which we all rely on when we need to know tomorrow's weather is the result of a hard day's work by the presenter, who is actually a highly-qualified meteorologist. Every morning after arriving at the TV studios, the first task of the day is to collect the latest data from the National Meteorological Office. This office provides up-to-the-minute information about weather conditions throughout the day, both in Britain and around the world. The information is very detailed and includes predictions, satellite and radar pictures, as well as more technical data. After gathering all the ...

How much does life weigh? The question can be understood differently. Some might take it word by word, others in some metaphorical way. Many are convinced that a human body has an immortal part - a soul. With knowing how few it actually weights, we can only assume what we have in these grams and whether it is anything worth at all. First of all, what do we claim to be a soul? It is our conscience with no form or location. It is the energy that is a part of the whole universe. In consideration of this, every human being has their own soul. This is what makes us all different and unique. Because of this, how can we even question the weight of our lives, when it seems to be completely different for everyone? Well, let's think about the moment of death. It is the exact moment, where our energy leaves our bodies. It has been scientifically proven that at this moment, every human being loses weight - 21 grams on aver...
As soon as I saw the rest of the group at the airport, I realised that I made a dreadful mistake. I shouldn’t have booked this trip alone. I should have invited a friend with me. Rest of the group standing few hundred meters away from me were punks. I mean literally punk people with their weird hairstyles and entirely dressed in black. They seemed so terryfing to me. Few of them noticed me standing here and they gave me smirky smiles. That scared me even more. How the hell am I supposed to enjoy this trip with these guys? I started walking slowly towards them, thinking that maybe I should turn around and not go to this trip. But I payed so much money and waited for this journey for so long. I reached the group and I was shaking a little. But you know what? They turned out to be the nicest and friendliest people and I had the best trip ever with them. That’s why there is a saying that don’t judge a book by it’s cover- so basically don’t ...

How to save fresh water? We all know what the problem is. Our lakes are dirty, people are wasting water for no reason not understanding how important it is not to waste it because we may soon run out of fresh water. It can seem like there's no solution, but there is! A few simple changes can help a lot. First of all, it is really important to keep our lakes clean, because nature is the premier source of fresh water. So people should stop dropping garbage into the lakes or near them. And walking pets near the lakes is also not such a good idea. It's not very nice to find some animal's body wastes while going to swim. Secondly, think about how much water you use. A few simple steps could save your money and help protect the environment. For example you should prefer shower to bath or you should turn the water off while brushing your teeth. Finally, people who work in agriculture, should start collecting rainwater to water their f...
Would you rather go to a large or a small school. I prefer large school. In a large school there are many opportunities to learn. First I would say that the big school is located in city. This is important to me. When I live in city i have to choose many number of schools. I have to do much more than go home and school. I have more time and i can go in many hobby groups. Secondly I would say that I do not like that teachers have less time. Teachers have little time to deal with people individually. Preparation of teaching materials is more difficult to have many classes in school. Work hard to improve because teachers do not have much time. Thirdly I would say I do not like that there are few nature in a big school near. City people do not surrounded the clean nature. People living in polluted climates, where cars travel every day. People should move to the land where it is cleaner and more recent. In a large sch...

If I Were a Minister of Education In the last five years we have witnessed several changes in the education system. Although some people find it useful and needed, others find it tragic. What has changed and what would I do to make school a better place? Firstly, there are several things that has been changed in the last few years, such as financing vocational schools. Students of vocational schools get paid for good grades and in some schools even for attending school. Even dorms are paid for students. That is true, we have a chance of getting a little scholarship in high schools, if we graduate with a medal, but it is times and times harder to achieve. In fact government has started to close high schools because they think that there are too many of them. It looks like our country wants only graduates with vocational education, which I find really sad. If I were a minister of education I would do every...

The Haunting House There is a land, far away from here. It is rocky and harsh and few people live there. There is very little transportation, few radio or television shows and certainly no newspaper circulation. There are towns nearby, but they are small and undeveloped. Actually, there is nothing to develop them into. The house, we're talking about, sits high atop a rocky hill alone, as a ruin. There is much history to this place, but that history is centuries old. Recently has nothing happened here. This huge manor has been vacant for nearly a hundred years. It was cleared of human-kind by a spirit so malevolent no one will step foot inside. It is mostly made of wood. There are no windows left, merely shells. The master of the house held it in such fear, that the ghosts are still visible, as reported by some who have been there. A master loved beer and whiskey. But he was incredibly mean and evil. ...
My dream house My dream house is located about few kilometers from the big city, in a very picturesque place near the endless river or bottomless lake. I dream about place like this as I prefer clean fresh air and unpolluted water. I don't find myself very happy in little and uncomfortable house, so my dream house is very cozy, comfortable, well planned, with lost of gigantic windows. If you asked about rooms, I must say that I don't need many of them, but it is very important that all these rooms were as large as it is possible. The modern front door opens into a spacious hall, where are many portraits of family members, exotic flowers. As far as bedrooms they are very large, comfortable and elegant as well. There are soft, huge beds and many antique things. It makes me to feel comfortable. By the way, every bedroom has bathroom and toilet, which are spacious and modern. There are a majority of m...

DAYDREAM I was kayaking across the ocean, when I realised I had come to a foreign land. Upon reaching the shore, I got out of my kayak and went exploring… I was walking on the beach when I suddenly noticed a tiny house in the middle of nowhere. The windows were broken and the door was open. It was made of wood and in a really bad condition. I saw the smoke coming from the chimney. I walked, scared, towards the tiny house, I was afraid to go in but I still entered. The house was really dusty. I was looking around, when suddenly a door appeared. I opened it and i was pulled in. The stair steps appeared one after another. I was really confused and at that moment I wished I had never got out of my kayak. I was walking down, when suddenly the stair steps started to get warmer and warmer. My legs couldn’t handle the heat, so I started running. The steps behind me began to explode and I ran f...

The New Beginning II Morning came yet there was no happiness on the surface. The young man had no idea what to do next after all, he was one of the Royal Soldiers, not a babysitter. The child on his arms seemed so helpless...so innocent... And then he decided something that a few hours ago he`d never do: he will keep the child and raise it to be a worthy worrior who`d once destroy all of the ishues and free this country from the Demons. And so, the baby still asleep, he left the ruins of what was called a city once and moved towards east, where the Royal Palace was situated. By midday he finally reached the White Wall, where was a secret entrance to the Palace`s main hall. The gate keepers waved sleepily when he passed them. The young man decided not to disturb them so he went on in total silence. Soon he reached the main hall, but his leader, captain Jacques, wasn't there as he had expected. "W...
My favourite outfit My name is Kerli. I am a 16-year-old schoolgirl. I am from Estonia. I would say I am usually helpful and kind. If anyone needs my help in anything, then I will always lend a hand. I like doing sports and I like to wear sporty clothes, because they are very comfortable. Also, like to wear feminine clothes. My favourite outfit is a leather jacket with blue jeans, a white blouse and black platforms. The leather jacket has white stripes down the sleeves. It is also quite worn-out by now because I have had it for some time now and I tend to wear it throughout the spring and autumn months. In fact it has gotten quite a few little tears where it has got caught on sharp objects. These clothes came from one of those big department stores and not a specialist leather shop. I am a big believer in wearing clothing that makes you feel great. The ideal item of clothing is the one that makes you both look an...
BABA IS YOU Game REVIEW Baba is You, developed by Hempuli Oy, is a sokoban-pushing puzzle game with a twist of rules manipulation. In this 2D game, the internal rules are presented as pushable blocks and you main goal is to push these blocks around and then combine these words to form new rules to solve puzzles. Unlike other puzzle games that require you to follow rules to complete levels, Baba is You encourages you to break rules and also gives you enough freedom to create new rules to level up. I know, the idea sounds really interesting and smart! The game doesn’t have too many instructions and it only has characters and corresponding objects on each stage. Players may be confused about how to play the game at first, but once you get deeper into the game and learn the game in practice, you will find the game has a lot of charm. We can see the little bunny Baba, three rocks, a yellow flag and four rules i...
Ghost story A family of four moved to a little old cottage. One night, when they went to bed they heard music coming from the attic, but when they got to the attic, there was nothing but the wind howling. They did not pay much attention to it because they thought it was just wind. A few weeks later, when they arrived home around 1 pm and found their dog, who almost never barked, barking and acting very strange. He was barking at their garage. The family at first thought it was a cat or some other small animal; the father turned his attention to the garage. The whole family then went to see what was going on, when they opened the old squeaking garage door; they saw an old lady who was sitting in a chair rocking back and forth very slowly. The father went to the car and directed the cars headlights towards the lady, they saw nothing, when he turned the lights out again, and the lady appeared. He did it again, same thing happened. The fam...
What are the Estonians like? Estonia is a very small country, therefore its population is quite small. We, Estonians, are very friendly and care about each other. When our country is going through rough times , we stick together and try to go through them as one . There aren't many riots in our country, because we aren't violent people. We like to stay quiet, so only a few of us have the courage to say their opinion out loud. Estonians have quite good manners. We say hi to each other and we often say sorry, even if our acts aren't so bad. There are also many gentlemen in Estonia, who open doors for women and make a lot of compliments. I really like that, because one opened door or one little compliment can make your mood for the entire day. Our country has four seasons and every season changes our mood. In summer and winter Estonians are very happy, but in autumn, when the weather is rainy, foggy a...

Wildlife under threat Giant panda The giant panda lives in a few mountain ranges in central China. As a result of farming, deforestation and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived. The Chinese language has given the bear 20 different names, such as ,,large bear cat'' or ,,bamboo bear'. Unlike other bear species, pandas have round pupils. Pandas are known for their large black patches around their eyes, ears and across their round bodies. Male pandas can weigh up to 160 kg and females can weigh as little as 75 kg. The giant panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests. It has strong jaw muscles and teeth for eating tough bamboo. Giant pandas are generally solitary. Each adult has a defined territory and female pandas do not tolerate each other. Pandas are known to attack humans, but rather out of irritation than ag...
TOPIC 8 The greatest poet of Scotland Robert Burns is loved by all Scotsmen as their greatest poet. The future poet was fortunate in his father who was understanding, friendly and fearless man. So it was probably from him that the poet inherited his great love and undrestanding of people. From his mother he, too, learned something that was to be value to him. His mother often sang the old songs and ballads of the countryside. Although William Burns, Robert´s father, was a poor peasant, he was man who valued knowledge. His greatest wish was to give his children the best education in his power. It was from him where Robert received his love of books. When Robert was six he and his brother Gilbert went to school, but only after a few months the teacher left and the school was closed. Their father persuaded two or three neighburs to join him in engaging another teacher. The new teacher was called John Murdoch. Although he was only eighteen...
My languages I love different languages. I mean, I really, really love different languages. I also believe and have been told that I pick them up rather easily. That might be true, although I did not pick any Greek up in Greece but that might have been because they spoke so damn fast that I could not tell if it was a word or an entire sentence. The first foreign language I learned was Russian. Considering I was ten when Estonia became a Republic, it makes sense. We began studying Russian in first grade, though it was simplified – "koška" instead of "kot", "medvešonok" instead of "medved", "saichik" etc. Did not make much sense and we mostly played some games in Russian (Tare-tareke etc). Learned as much playing outside, since we had Estonian-Russian kids around as well. Not that we played with them. It's sad to say but it was not a nice time to be a Russian kid. We were mean to them, and we...
Memoirs of a Geisha While reading the book I was quite impressed about the lifestyle and the hard work, which comes along with becoming a geisha. It was not only a good book to read, it was also like a schoolbook for history. It took place in Japan in the beginning of 19th century and at the World War I. It explained the thought of a geisha: why have many misused the word geisha, and misunderstood the reality. The book itself is about a girl, who was sold to a family by her own father. She worked there as a maid, but as time went by she grew up and a famous and loved geisha decided to train her to become a geisha too. She worked hard, but succeeded well - she was one of the most valued geishas. The book takes us to a tour where any detail of a great and merry Japanese village cannot be left out, where every little flower or Japanese cherry tree is blossomed, where geishas are highly valued and respected, until t...
Story began in 19th November. The group round the fireplace was nearly all composed of lawyers. The most famous of them was an old mr. TREVES .Mr TREVES eas close to eighty. He was member of the famous lawyer company. He knows the historical background to various more than anyone else in England. People said Mr. Treves ought to write his memoirs. Mr. TREVES knew better. He knew that he knew too much. He's opinion was always respected. The group who sat around the fireplace talked about the murder what had happened in the Old Bailey in the morning. They talked themselves out, little by little and then their eyes turned to mr. Treves. Then mr. Treves said a few wise words. He likes a good detective story, but they all start with the wrong place. They start with the murder. But murder is and should be at the end of the story. It should begin at long before, perhaps even years before that. the whole story should culminate to towards zero. T...
Word Processing Practice ex 1 sí sí BARCELONA sí sí It's vibrant and hip, it buzzes till dawn and will leave you exhausted, exhilarated and aching for more. For a sleepless weekend, Barcelona is the place to go. CATALANS The Catalans really know how to have a good time. They love life, love to party and see little point in sleeping when they could be out enjoying the night scene. At the hour when most people in Britain are heading home to bed, the action in Barcelona is just warming up. And when most Scottish clubs are closing their doors, the hippest clubs in this city are just opening theirs. GAUDI Most tourists will want to take in stunning sights such as Gaudi's wackily- designed flats, his unfinished Sagrada Famiglia church and the city's more traditional Santa Eulalia cathedral. Young locals, however, are more likely to be found w...
Polar bear Ursus maritimus or the "sea bear." Polar bears live near the circumpolar at north in areas where they can hunt seals at open leads. Scientists estimate that there are between 22000 to 27000 polar bears. Its closest relative is the brown bear. Adult male polar bears are 2,5 to 3 meters tall. They weigh 250 to 770 kilograms. Polar bears also sometimes kill and eat both walrus and beluga whales. They have even hunted short-legged reindeer and sometimes even birds and bird eggs. Polar bears are top of the food cha...
Tallinn Tallinn is a beautiful city in NorthEstonia. It is washed and influenced by the Gulf of Finland in the north. Tallinn has a lot on sights and I'm going to introduce some of them. Town Hall Square the square in front of Tallinn's Town Hall functioned as a marketplace for centuries, dating back to times even before the Town Hall itself was built. Through the years this served as a place of celebrations as well as executions. St. Olav's Church was the tallest church in Medieval Europe. The earliest data on St. Olav's Church come from 1267. Little is known about the building of this Gothic style church and its early years. Church of the Holy Ghost is the only sacred building from the 14th century in Tallinn that has preserved its original form. The simple, humble Church of Holy Ghost was completed in the 1360's, but for the exception of the baroque spire, it h...
We live in a cruel world where people only think about themselves. There are extremely few people who care about homeless people even though homelessness has greatly increased over the past decade. But why is that so? Are they worse than us? As Mike Yakonski once said: “Sometimes it's easy to walk by because we know we can't change someone's whole life in a single afternoon. But what we fail to realize it that simple kindness can go a long way toward encouraging someone who is stuck in a desolate place.” I can relate to that fairly well because everyday i see homeless people and it makes me extremely sad. When i got a spare change with me i always give it to the ones that need it the most, because i think it is the only thing at the moment that i can do for homeless people. The reasons people lose their home are mostly addictions, losing their job, expelled from school or even family problems. If they have already lost everything, mos...

If you have created something, then try to be open minded Teacher: O'Mahony V.PG 11A 09.03.2009 This written essay here is talking about my thoughts and facts of life, what is around us. First I thought that why is always easier to create something but to destroy is much harder. Exactly there have been so many wars in history. Everybody wanted to own a lot of countries and others had to fight for their created country. Also they started to teach young people to kill and protect their country with killing enemies. Also government tried to keep a low profile, if there were some wars in state. These are my thoughts of creating and keeping something. In the old times were many wars. Some states predominated over other weaker countries or states. Weaker countries had created their own and loved country and they wanted to live like that for a long time. But also stronger countries wanted to broaden their boards and...

Global warming The problem of desertification increases every year. More and more fertile areas become useless. Seas, lakes and other bodies of water dry out. Desertification does not only have an effect on the dry areas but also influences the areas that aren't haunted by the lack of water and land. Desertification has an effect on all of us. It slows down the development of agriculture or puts a total stop to it. The poor living conditions of developing countries drive people to search food somewhere else. In addition to natural ways, humankind helps along to the process of desertification that eventually leads to global warming. The main reasons are the fast growth of the population and it's consequences too intensive animal raising and the arable lands that are made too fast for the nature to adjust. As I said before desertification eventually leads to global w...

The Chernobyl accident in 1986 was the result of a flawed reactor design that was operated with inadequately trained personnel. The resulting steam explosion and fires released at least 5% of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind. Two Chernobyl plant workers died on the night of the accident, and a further 28 people died within a few weeks as a result of acute radiation poisoning. The April 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the Ukraine was the product of a flawed Soviet reactor design coupled with serious mistakes made by the plant operators. It was a direct consequence of Cold War isolation and the resulting lack of any safety culture. The accident destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor, killing 30 operators and firemen within three months and several further deaths later. Acute radiation syndrome was originally diagnosed in 237 people on-site and involved with the clean-up. Of these, 28 people ...
