A book worth reading

A book worth reading A year ago I managed to find time to read an extremely profound book entitled The Fault in Our Stars. This tragic, yet realistic drama was written by John Green, a famous author of young-adult fiction, and it provides a valuable insight into the life of children fighting with cancer. The Fault in Our Stars is about a teenage girl Hazel, who has stage 4 thyroid cancer. Hazel’s daily routine contains taking meds, reading books and taking part of the support group meetings for cancer- fighters. In the support group she meets an extraordinarily handsome boy Augustus, who, full of metaphores and mystery, catches Hazel’s attention immediately. As the plot evolves, these two spectacularily appalling figures get close and share unique experiences. Together they help out a friend dealing with the loss of

Cigarettes - Enemies or Friends?

Cigarettes include over 100 ingredients, many of them flavourants for the tobacco. A key ingredient that makes cigarettes more addictive is the inclusion of reconstituted tobacco, which has additives to make nicotine more volatile as the cigarette burns. So it contains these ingredients which are habit-forming and as we all know, it is really hard to abandon. When people think of cancers caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer. Most cases of lung cancer death, close to 90% in men, and 80% in women are caused by cigarette smoking. There are several other forms of cancer attributed to smoking as well. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death and has negative health impacts on people at all stages of life. It harms unborn babies, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and also seniors. All in all, cigarettes are definitely not our friends, likely enemies. They are quite expensive, they

Environmental and health effects Studies in the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus say that over one million people possibly affected by radiation. By 2000, about 4000 cases of thyroid cancer had been diagnosed in exposed children. Ten years after the explosion, more and more children that survived the incident are developing cancer. Also the children who are born from parents exposed to high radiation levels may be in threat of deformities Thyroid cancer is usually not fatal if diagnosed and treated early. Apart from the cancer, there is said to be no evidence of a major public health impact 14 years after the accident.

Ultraviolettkiirgus

See ei läbi nahka ega aknaklaasi. Võrreldes UVAga on UVB kiired 1000 korda tõhusamad päikesepõletuse tekitajad. UVC-kiirgus on inimesele kõige ohtlikum kiirgus. ( American Cancer Society, 2014) 2. UV-KIIRGUSE MÕJU INIMESELE UV-kiirgus on üks suurimaid nahavähi tekkimise riskifaktoreid.

Clive Staples Lewis

At the age of four, shortly after his dog Jacksie was killed by a car, he announced that his name was now Jacksie. At first he would answer to no other name, but later accepted Jack, the name by which he was known to friends and family for the rest of his life. Lewis loved to read, and as his father's house was filled with books. Lewis was schooled by private tutors before being sent to the Wynyard School in Watford, Hertfordshire, in 1908, just after his mother's death from cancer. In 1956 he married the American writer Joy Gresham, 17 years his junior, who died four years later of cancer at the age of 45. Lewis died three years after his wife, as the result of renal failure(neeru puudulikkus). His death came one week before his 65th birthday. Media coverage of his death was minimal, as he died on 22 November 1963 the same day that U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated(mõrvatud), and the same day another famous author, Aldous Huxley, died

Book Report: The Spare Room

I read a book called The Spare Room. It is written by Helen Garner who is an Australian writer and journalist. She was born on 7th November in Geelong and now lives in Victoria. This novel has won several awards and that's one of the reasons I chose to read it. The Spare Room talks about a 64-year woman Helen who lives in Melbourne, Australia. One day, her friend Nicola who lives in Sydney calls and asks if she could stay with her for three weeks. The reason she calls is that she is a cancer patient who needs to be taken care of. As they have been friends for a long time, Helen gave her consent and welcomed Nicola in her home. In Melbourne Helen also has a treatment in an institution called the Theodore. Chemo hadn't worked on her and that is why she is looking for new options to heal though the cancer is already in stage four. In that institute she gets weird kind of treatments, for example administring loads of vitamiin C which makes her sick and puts her through terrible pains.

operation of fossil fuel- burning power plants and automobiles that combust fuel. Combined, these two sources are responsible for about 90% of all air pollution in the United States. All kind of pollutions can lead us to serious health problems. For example, air pollution is increasingly being cited as the main cause of lung conditions such as asthma - twice as many people suffer from asthma today compared to 20 years ago. Every year, 3.2m Europeans are diagnosed with cancer - the most common cause of death after heart disease. Most widespread are cancers of the lungs, breast and colon. Diseases such as bronchitis, lung cancer and heart diseases may all eventually appear in people exposed to air pollution. When the wind blows, then it carries the pollution with him. Futhermore, the rain reduces the pollution. Air pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide also have harmful effects on natural ecosystem

tremors, collapse, difficulty breathing, coldness and eventually heart failure. However, death occurs so rapidly that many times the symptoms are missed. Fatal poisoning in humans is very rare, only occurring after eating a lot of yew foliage. Traditional uses In recent years it has been found that taxol, a chemical found in the bark of the yew, inhibits cell growth and cell division, and may have some promise in the fight against cancer. It was also one of the most important trees in the history of European warfare, as its wood was used exclusively for the making of the longbows, spears and dagger handles. In the past they were used as landmarks, because of their size and longevity, and their dark branches would make them stand out in the landscape. It is excellent for furniture making, interior, fences, gates, chairs, doors, tables, and rustic furniture. Where the Yew Grows

pollutants. In addition, dioxins which were released into the environment many years ago are still contributing to current exposure. Even very small dioxin concentrations can cause negative effects on the environment and on human health, in particular on the most vulnerable groups like children. Human health effects include impairment of the immune system, the nervous system, the hormonal system and the reproductive functions. Dioxins are also suspected of causing cancer. How Are We Exposed to Dioxins? Although formation of dioxins is local, environmental distribution is global. Dioxins are found throughout the world in the environment. The highest levels of these compounds are found in some soils, sediments and food, especially dairy products, meat, fish and shellfish. Very low levels are found in plants, water and air. Most of us receive almost all of our dioxin exposure from the food we eat:

Short and long term effects of alcohol

Depending on the BAC (blood alcohol concentration) there are different states the consumer may end up: euphoria, lethargy , confusion, stupor, coma. Therefore it is important to have control over alcohol intake in order to avoid coma while the goal is euphoria. Allthough when taking a next beer, following mornings hangover seems to be the main disadvantage, in addition there are also long term effects such as an increased risk of developing alcoholism, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and cancer. Damage to the central and peripheral nervous system is a result of sustained alcohol consumption. On the other hand research has found a correlation between light consumption in other words- one or two alcoholic beverages per day- and reduced risk of heart disease as well as reduction in all-cause mortality. However, some recent studies found that moderate consumption of alcohol did not decrease heart disease and that the positive effects may be due to methodological flaws in research

Smoking should be banned in public places

Smoking should be banned in public places I think that everybody have his own opinion for smoking. The probleem is that we do not always realise when it disturbing others. First of all, I agree with the statement that smoking should be banned in public places. I think this will disturb every one who is not smoker, when someone smoking next to you when you enjoy your lunch. In my opinion, this is good idea for building smoking rooms, then we do not discriminate smokers who have tobacco addicts. On the other hand, there are many disadvantages of banning smoking in public places. Many people like smoke cigar, when they are drinking whisky, so they can not continue the tradition. Although some bars deny smoking inside and client have to do it outside. In conclusion, I would say that a large proportion of people are smokers and we have to consider with them. I just wish that they will quit smoking because this is ...

Life in future

Life in future I think that technology will definitely influence our lives, but I don't think that life will be better than now, rather worse. The air won't be suitable for breathing so there will be probably some kind of masks or glass cities, where to live. Water won't be drinkable and people will buy all needful water from shops, actually not from shops but from the internet, because there won't be shops anymore. Food nearly won't exist anymore; energy will come in tablet form. Transport will be a lot comfortable and faster. Cars will be soundless and all vehicles will whir ten times faster. You will think nothing of taking a holiday in outer space. Students will learn from TV, recorders and teaching machines. They will get pills to make them learn faster. We shall be healthier, too. There will be no common colds, cancer, tooth decay or mental illness. But this will be artificial and impermanent....

Conventional medicine has little to learn from alternative medicine

Conventional medicine has little to learn from alternative medicine. In our modern world more and more people look for alternative medicine instead of taking conventional treatment. Which of these treatments is better or can they both be used effectively in different cases? It is generally understood that when having a severe condition or an emergency, conventional treatment is strongly needed. For example, in a case of a heart attack or a severed limb, it is vital to find a way to a hospital or surgeon in a hurry. Unlike alternative medicine, conventional medicine has proven effectiveness and is scientifically based, while alternative medicine has a lack of scientific basis and its results are not always consistent. On the other hand, alternative medicine is better when having relatively mild condition, such as headaches, then a doctor would probably write out pain killers. Not much help in the long term. How to live healthy

If you want to live healthy, you should drink a lot of water. Water is needed to carry out our body functions, remove waste and carry nutrients and oxygen around our body. Men should drink about 3 liters water a day, for women it's about 2 liters. Also, you should have enough sleep. If you are tired you eat more. Sleep is a key to a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight and mind. People who do regular activity have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Choose walking over transport for close distances and climb the stairs instead of taking the lift. When you enjoy the sports, you'll naturally want to do them. If you want to stay fit eat fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain many vitamins and minerals that are good for your health. Also you should stop eating fast food because many processed food contain a high amount of salt which leads to high blood pressure.

For and Against Mobile Phones essey

internet access, GPS and other useful applications is quite expensive. Secondly, mobile phones have made people lazy. Hardly no-one goes to knock on a door to ask a friend out. Instead they call or send a text message. And of course there are video call, so people don't even have to meet face to face. Most important downside is health hazards. Mobile phones will affect one's hearing. Also it is proven that mobile phones have bad radiation and they may cause cancer. It can be said that mobile phones are useful and make people's life easier. But I think the problems that mobile phones may cause are too serious to avoid and it is healthier to use mobile phones only in a emergency.
