Phosphate Binders: Your Questions Answered

Through a delicate process called homeostasis, the body keeps both phosphate and calcium at healthy levels. Both the kidneys and the parathyroid glands play vital roles. First, the kidneys, which activate vitamin D, control the amount of phosphate that is absorbed and excreted from the foods you eat. Second, a hormone called parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates phosphate by increasing or decreasing the blood's phosphate concentration. A normal blood phosphate level in adults is 3-4.5 mg/dL and a normal PTH is 10-55 pg/mL. However, in kidney disease and kidney failure, the body is not able to keep the levels of phosphate at healthy levels. When the kidneys start to fail, they cannot excrete excess phosphate from your body. In addition, excess PTH production, which occurs in kidney failure, prevents the body from maintaining healthy levels of phosphate. Why is it important to keep phosphate levels under control?

Extended essay: To what extent does a plant-based diet lower the risk of coronary artery disease?

I’m going to investigate this topic in order to answer my research question: To what extent does a plant based diet lower the risk of coronary artery disease? There are different types of cardiovascular diseases. Some affect the heart’s muscle, valves or rhythm, but most conditions are caused by the hardening or clogging of arteries. Coronary artery disease is associated with the hardening of arteries that supply blood to heart muscle and is, in most cases, preventable and even treatable as it’s often found to be caused by poor lifestyle choices.1 These lifestyle choices include unhealthy dietary choices, lack of exercise and cigarette smoking. Other risk factors appear to be diabetes, high blood pressure, stress and history of heart disease running in the family. 2 A plant based diet is solely based on foods that are derived from plants. Individuals who

Art of Healing: present and future

The people who are ill or some kind of an accident has happened to them need help. Medicine is the science and art of healing. It is a science because it is based on knowledge gained through careful study and experimentation. Medicine develops very quickly. Nowadays the doctors can do almost anything they want. Egyptian doctors began to specialize in 2500 B.C. At that time they were already quite skilful. When a man lost a limb there was a big possibility that he would lose too much blood and die or get a blood poisoning before that time. Now the doctors can help people who have been in very serious car accidents for example. They can even replace blood with blood substitutes for a short time until they find the right blood type for the patient for the blood transfusion. This can save many lives. There are very many different pills that help with smaller problems like a headache or a bad tooth. Some people don't trust doctors very much. They prefer to use alternative

Incredibly strong-willed, Tweety recovered quickly from pneumonia but just a few days later he was injured in a fight with another rabbit and had to go to the vet. With time the injury healed and Tweety enjoyed many happy days playing and relacing with friends. One day the caregivers found Tweety looking very sick again. They rushed him to the hospital where the vets said Tweety would need blood from another rabbit to survive. One of the brave bunnies, bernie, gave the blood that saved Tweety. Although Tweety could not have survived without Bernie´s blood, the vets still did not have much hope as he had too many internal problems. Yet, Tweety seemed to be hanging on, so they waited and hoped for a miracle. After some serious treatment the caregivers brought Tweety home to the farm. A check-up two weeks later showed that his health was improving and his

Caffeine

Caffeine is generally 17 consumed in coffee, cola, chocolate, and tea, although it is also available over-the-counter as a 18 stimulant. 19 Caffeine is believed to work by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain and other organs. This 20 reduces the ability of adenosine to bind to the receptors, which would slow down cellular 21 activity. The stimulated nerve cells release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline), which 22 increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow to muscles, decreases blood flow to the skin 23 and organs, and causes the liver to release glucose. Caffeine also increases levels of the 24 neurotransmitter dopamine. 25 Part of the reason caffeine is classified by the Food and Drug Administration as generally 26 recognized as safe is that toxic doses (over 1000 mg for an average adult) are much higher than 27 typically used doses. Ordinary consumption has low health risks, even when carried on for

CD review

CD review A CD I recently listened was A rush of blood to the head by a band called Coldplay. They are an alternative rock band formed in London, England on 16 January 1998. The group comprises vocalist/pianist/guitarist Chris Martin, lead guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Will Champion. Being their second album, A rush of blood to the head was released in 2002. The album has several popular singles such as "In My Place", "Clocks", and the ballad "The Scientist." It also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2003 Grammy Awards. This is my favourite CD, because you forget everything that surrounds you while you listen to it. Chris martin has a powerful voice and the overall sound is flawless. The songs contain lush melodies and they are really relaxing

Heart and Lung Health

Heart and Lung Health: This is one of the most important reasons to exercise. An inactive lifestyle is one of the major causes of heart diseases. While a lot of heart conditions occur when we are older, it is necessary to start exercising at a young age to keep our hearts strong as we age. Cardiovascular exercises like running, swimming, cycling, and aerobics are especially good for the heart, hence the name `cardiovascular'. These types of exercises help to maintain your blood pressure, reduce the bad cholesterol and increase the good cholesterol in your blood, reduce the risk of diabetes, and increase your endurance level so you don't easily run out of breath. Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol are all conditions that the black individual is more susceptible to than most other races. Different lectures started after the sixth lesson. There were more lectures, but unfortunately I couldn't attend them all. The themes of lectures were very interesting. Firstly, the lecture that was carried out by our local general practitioner. She talked about health in general and about the right diet. They showed us how to measure blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. For me it was hard to focus on the lecture, because all the activities caused a lot of noise and it was hard to listen to the doctor. In my opinion the lecture was very instructive and educational. Secondly, the lecture that was carried out by Tallinn Genetic Engineering Institute's director. The subject of the lecture was very difficult. He discussed genetics in general, the history of DNA and genetic engineering's development. Genetics is a science of heredity

keep them well taken care of. Music therapy has existed in its common current form in the United States since around 1944. Live music was used in hospitals after both of the World Wars, as part of the regime for some recovering soldiers. Music has been shown to affect portions of the brain. Part of this therapy is the ability of music to affect emotions and social interactions. Music may reduce heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure in patients with coronary heart disease. Benefits included a decrease in blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of anxiety in heart patients. Listening to Mozart's piano sonata can reduce the number of seizures in people with epilepsy.

mis on tavalised ka tänapäeva džässmuusikas. Esimesteks jazz fusion'i plaatideks peetakse Gary Burtoni "The Time Machine'i" (1966) ja Larry Coryelli (The Free Spiritsi) "Out of Sight And Soundi" (1966). Samuti oli suur mõju jazz fusion arengule Miles Davise 1968. aasta plaat "Miles in the Sky", kus Davis kasutab esmakordselt elektrilisi instrumente. Samal ajal hakkasid erinevad rock-grupid näiteks Cream ja The Grateful Dead, samuti Blood, Sweat and Tears ja Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention kasutama oma muusikas džässielemente ja -harmooniaid ning katsetama vabaimprovisatsiooni. Tuntumaid 1970ndate jazz fusioni esindajaid on Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Tony Williams Lifetime, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancocki Headhunters, Soft Machine, Colosseum, Caravan, Nucleus, Blood, Sweat and Tears , Chicago, If, Frank Zappa, Santana, The Eleventh House jt.

Müüt roosist

Finally she got it . But oh dear ! The rose was covered with hedgehog's quills now . The girl tried to get away with them but accidentally she pricked in her finger and it started bleeding . She looked her other fingers. They were also a little bloody . She guessed it had happened when she tried to get the rose from hedgehog's back . Accidentally she held the petals with her bloody hands. And now they were covered with blood . The girl put the rose in her basket and ran home . Mother treated her hands a little bit and then the girl started to decorate the home . She put the hepatices and anemones to every room . But into her room she only put one vase with a rose , coloured with blood and with thorns . Since then we always have roses with thorns and very often they are red .

Rational Use of Diagnostic Tests

disease, or put another way, how closely the mean of test data points accords to the mean of the reference standard. A test with high diagnostic accuracy has relatively few false results in comparison to true results. Precision is the measure of a test result's reproducibility. If repeated testing is performed on an individual patient's sample, the results from each testing should be similar to each other if the test is, in fact, precise. For instance, if a white blood cell count from an individual patient is run 2 to 3 times on a particular hematology analyzer, the results would be considered precise if the results from each testing were in concordance with each other. Results from a hematology analyzer would be expected to be more precise than results from manual differentials.[7] However, it must be confirmed that this is the case, particularly when results from a particular test do not accord with expectations or with a patient's clinical presentation.

Addiction and drugs

So why do people start doing it in the first place? Firstly sometimes people try their first cigarette, they like it and so they start doing it more regularly. Secondly some people start smoking because there's a rumour saying that it's slimming. And another reason may be that it may relieve stress. After three or four cigarettes you get addicted to it because of nicotine. It is a drug that stimulates the brain. When the level of nicotine falls in your blood and you're a regular smoker, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms, such as craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger, difficulty with concentration, or just feeling awful. These symptoms are relieved by the next cigarette. Most smokers need to smoke regularly to feel normal and to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms. So once you start smoking it is very hard to quit. But why is smoking so harmful? Cigarettes have tar in them which contains many chemicals

Crime

Crime It is a disease, yet one of the basic doings of humanity. Crime has existed since the beginning of time. Ever since Kain slayed Abel, there has been crime. Though not only murder is a crime. Thievery, rape, arsonism and many more jolly things like that- they are all things that can be placed in a big metal barrel with the word crime written on it in blood. Actually everything illegal belongs there. And those who do it, they should be burned alive. There is no cure for being a thief, arsonist or a murderer. Only death can cure it. It is easy to become a criminal. For example, if you get sacked from your job, yet you have a family to feed, then it is easy to pocket some wallets or purses on the street and sell them. That would be the begining of a most likely long cycle, that usually ends with death or imprisonment. It is not easy to escape
