The Christmas season in the UK would be nothing without the traditional ,,panto". Comedians, singers and dancers perform in hilariously exaggerated ways. The shows are mostly aimed to children and are based on popular fairy stories and folk legends. Pantomime has become big business in the UK. It can often run for six to eight weeks. Pantomime needs to have a strong story line and has to include all the important elements as the good battling against the evil where the good must come out as a winner. Shows include comic chases and situations which are known as Slapstick comedy. This comedy takes its name from a magical device that makes slapping noise and is used by characters. The most famous of those pantomime clowns was Joseph grimaldi who made his first appearance in 1800. Pantomime now had its first real star.

Dear Meg Thanks a lot for your letter. It was so interesting to hear about English traditions. I wrote about an Estonian holiday. Halloween, or Hallowe'en, is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31.Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, ghost tours, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving jack-o-lanterns. The term Halloweenis shortened from All-hallow-even, as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day", which is now also known as All Saints' Day. Irish and Scottish immigrants carried versions of the tradition to North America in the nineteenth century. Other western countries embraced the holiday in the late twentieth century. Halloween is celebrated in several parts of the Western world, most commonly in Ireland, the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom and occasionally in parts of Australia and New Zealand.

The whole idea behind Bistromathics was that space depends on the observer's movement in restaurants. As Adams had specified, it relies on three nonabsolute (meaning that they could be anything) numbers: the number of people for whom the table is reserved, the given time of arrival and the relationship between the cost of the items on the check and the amount that people are prepared to pay for (47, 48). The most satirical idea Adams had come up with was the Somebody Else's Problem (shortened as SEP) field. SEP is actually a quite simple concept: individuals often ignore issues that are of relative or critical importance. Thus, an SEP field could be applied to physical objects to prevent them from being acknowledged. For example, a spaceship could land on a cricket arena and begin to annihilate a throng without any issues, because everyone would just mentally block seeing it happen, since it was not their problem.

These strong consonants tend to be long, voiceless, aspirated, and high. With fortis consonants, following thumb rules stay true: articulation with more muscular effort and greater breath force, voiceless in all positions, fortis plosives are aspirated in syllable-initial position, vowels are shortened before a fortis consonant. Example: voiceless [bb ] is "lenis", whereas [p] is "fortis". Lenis plosives have less intraoral pressure than fortis ones. The difference is easily noticed in the English pair "touched" vs. "judged" (said in isolation). The final consonants are pronounced without vocal fold vibration in both cases. But the fricative component of the affricate in "touched" is much noisier (more turbulent) than that of the affricate in "judged"

sound. To produce a stressed syllable one may change the pitch, make the syllable louder, make the syllable longer. Fixed stress always word-initial (Czech, Hungarian), always word-final (Turkish, French), penultimate (Polish). Dynamic stress Russian, English Tone languages Somali, Mandarin Stress-timed languages syllables may last different amounts of time, but stressed syllables appear at a roughly constant rate. Non-stressed syllables are shortened to accomodate this. Syllable-timed languages every syllable is perceived as taking up roughly the same amount of time. Syllables are given approximately equal stress. When words are combined into sentences (or phrases), only one of the syllables receives a primary stress in that sentence (or phrase) and all the other syllables have a secondary stress. down from Old English whereas the second one is a Scandinavian borrowing. Examples of native doublets are 'shadow' ('тень') and 'shade! Both are derived from the same Old English word 'sceadu'. 'Shade' is developed from the Nominative case, 'sceadu' is derived from oblique ease 'sceadwe'. The words 'drag' and 'draw' both come from Old English 'dragan' ('тащить') Etymological doublets also arise as a result of shortening when both the shortened form and the full form of the word are used: 'defense' - 'защита' - 'fence' - ''забор'; 'history' - 'история' - 'story' - 'рассказ'. Examples of ETYMOLOGICAL TRIPLETS (i.e. groups of three words of common root) are few in number: hospital (Lat.) - hostel (Norm.Fr.) - hotel (Par.. Fr.); to capture (Lat.) - to catch (Norm. Fr.) - to chase (Par. Fr.). 15. Folk etymology = popular etymology Folk’ or ‘popular’ theories (i.e
charging. Both superchargers and turbochargers do this. The difference between the two devices is their source of energy . TURBOCHARGER When people talk about race cars or high-performance sports cars, the topic of turbochargers usually comes up. Turbochargers also appear on large diesel engines. A turbo can significantly boost an engine's horsepower without significantly increasing its weight, which is the huge benefit that makes turbos so popular! . In fact, the term "turbocharger" is a shortened version of "turbo-supercharger," its official name. The turbocharger is bolted to the exhaust manifold of the engine. The exhaust from the cylinders spins the turbine, which works like a gas turbine engine. The turbine is connected by a shaft to the compressor, which is located between the air filter and the intake manifold. The compressor pressurizes the air going into the pistons. The exhaust from the cylinders passes through the turbine blades, causing the turbine to spin. The more exhaust

In general, Old English might be called a synthetic language, which uses inflectional morphemes to express the syntactical relationships. Middle English might be called an analytical language, which uses function words to constitute syntactical relationships. SHORTENING AND LENGTHENING IN MIDDLE ENGLISH Late in Old English, vowels were lengthened before certain clusters: /nd/, /ld/, /rd/, /mb/, //. Later on, the vowels in many of these words were shortened again, giving the appearance that no lengthening happened; but evidence from the Ormulum indicates otherwise. vt. You may hear people ask, "If it's dangerous, why do so many people have medical marijuana cards?" It's true that scientists have determined that the cannabis plant has the potential for addressing a range of medical conditions. But using marijuana at a young age can result in structural and functional deficits of the brain. This could cause you to develop weakened verbal and communication skills, lowered learning capabilities and a shortened attention span. In addition to the possible effects on your brain, smoking marijuana may also be hazardous to your developing lungs. Marijuana smoke contains 50% to 70% more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. You may have heard people argue that marijuana is a "gateway drug" to harder drug use. Some say this is a myth, others insist it is a fact. The truth is that there is a link. Research shows that the earlier you start using marijuana, the more

Later came Reval (presumably after the old county of Rävala), the name used by the Germans who ruled the country for seven centuries. Russians then modified Reval to Revel. For Estonians, the town came to be called Tallinn from Taanilinn (Danish town) after Danish conquest in the 13th century. Over the course of time, Taanilinn was shortened to Tallinn The place is believed to have been settled by Finno-Ugric peoples about 2500 BC. The Danes, led by King Valdemar II, conquered northern Estonia in 1219. Legend has it that one day, when the Danes were about to lose a bloody battle, the sky suddenly opened and a red flag with a white cross on it dropped down upon them from the heavens. This is allegedly how the Danes obtained their national flag, the Dannebrog in a battle against the Estonians.

It is considered by most Japanese to be one of the most important annual festivals and has been celebrated for centuries with its own unique customs. Traditional food Japanese people eat a special selection of dishes during the New Year celebration called osechi-ryri ( or ?), typically shortened to osechi. Many of these dishes are sweet, sour, or dried, so they can keep without refrigeration--the culinary traditions date to a time before households had refrigerators, when most stores closed for the holidays. However, because the underground temperature and pressure are higher than at the surface, the gas may contain heavier hydrocarbons such as pentane, hexane, and heptane in the gaseous state. At surface conditions these will condense out of the gas to form natural gas condensate, often shortened to condensate. Condensate resembles petrol in appearance and is similar in composition to some volatile light crude oils. The proportion of light hydrocarbons in the petroleum mixture varies greatly among different oil fields, ranging from as much as 97 percent by weight in the lighter oils to as little as 50 percent in the heavier oils and bitumens. The hydrocarbons in crude oil are mostly alkanes, cycloalkanes and various aromatic

historical buying patterns. The result of these factors is that there is not a single, integrated plan for the organization---there were as many plans as businesses. Clearly, there is a need for a mechanism through which these different functions can be integrated together. Supply chain management is a strategy through which such integration can be achieved. 6 Moreover, shortened product life cycles, increased competition, and heightened expectations of customers have forced many leading edge companies to move from physical logistic management towards more advanced supply chain management. Additionally, in recent years it has become clear that many companies have reduced their manufacturing costs as much as it is practically possible. Therefore, in many cases, the only possible way to further reduce costs and lead times is with effective supply chain management.
Children's literature in Soviet Union was considered a major genre, because of its educational role. A large share of early period children's books were poems: Korney Chukovsky, Samuil Marshak, Agnia Barto were among the most read. "Adult" poets, such as Mayakovsky and Sergey Mikhalkov, contributed to the genre as well. Some of the early Soviet children's prose was loose adaptations of foreign fairy tales unknown in contemporary Russia. Alexey N. Tolstoy wrote Buratino, a light-hearted and shortened adaptation of Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio. Alexander Volkov introduced fantasy fiction to Soviet children with his loose translation of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published as The Wizard of the Emerald City, and then wrote a series of five sequels, unrelated to Baum. Other notable authors include Nikolay Nosov, Lazar Lagin, Vitaly Bianki and Vladimir Suteev. While fairy tales were relatively free from ideological oppression, the realistic children's

To fight with the raiders and to put down frequent armed rebellions, Rome had to keep an army of about 40,000 men in the province3. Roman Britain The Romans named their new province Britannia. The basis of Roman civilization and administration was the towns. Many grew out of Celtic settlements, military camps or market centres. The Romans built most towns to a standardized pattern of straight, parallel streets that crossed at right angles. 22 The paved streets4 had drainage systems, and fresh water was piped to many buildings. There were three different kinds of town in Roman Britain. Some were peopled by Roman citizens

(xii). Irving is a major figure in the history of the short story in America. Indeed, Fred Lewis Pattee begins his book The Development of the American Short Story with Irving and identifies The Sketch Book, which contains "Rip Van Winkle" and the "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," as the starting point for this literary form in the United States. Pattee notes that the short story suited Irving, who tended to write in "spurts and dashes": "He did not deliberately choose the shortened form: he fell into it automatically because of his temperament, his natural indolence that forbade longcontinued efforts, his powerful yet volatile emotions, and his early literary training in the school of Addison and Goldsmith and Dr. Johnson" (6). Another striking characteristic of Irving's writing is the preponderance of visual imagery. A painter himself, Irving often drew verbal pictures in his essays and stories, and the title of his most famous work makes a double
