It is possible to be a technological genius, say a computer nerd, without social skills or civil conscience. I'd rather have as a neighbor an illiterate janitor with an easy-going, friendly disposition. Hence, I value what we might call character more than specialist knowledge from an antisocial person. God knows we want everyone to be a well-mannered genius. But humans are not cut out to be happy like pigs in a pen. We instead have insatiable brains, with mental appetites. So our goal is to balance the brainwork with hearts and smiles. "Facts served with sauce." Where does common sense fit on? Is it teachable? To a degree, what we mean by common sense is simply learned experience. Something more exists, though. Those who we praise for common sense may be quick-witted, steady-nerved, and efficient at practical decision-making. It is likely some of those traits depend on genetic brain makeup. In any case, for purposes of an

The cost of production

The costs of production Production Decisions about production require individual agents to make decisions about the allocation and use of physical inputs. · Objectives of agents, technology, availability and quality of inputs determine the nature of these decisions. Since the objectives are often pecuniary, it is often necessary to relate the decisions about the physical units of inputs and outputs to the costs of production. · If the prices of the inputs and the production relationships are known (or understood), it is possible to calculate or estimate all the cost relationships for each level of output. COMPONENT TECHNOLOGY – THE PROBLEM The Problem •Today, anything and anyone must be net-enabled. •Automated business processes, products, and software systems need to evolve in „e-Time“. •Everything must be changeable, extensible, adaptable. •Quality is an important issue. Architectural consequences of these requirements: •Software should not be designed as monolithic unit but partitioned into composableservices that can be spontaneously connected and orchestrated by business/technical processes (component-based software). •„Software entropy“should be maximized: loosely coupling between peers, decentralized information access, reflective approaches (Just-in-Time Integration). •Software must be e-enabled. SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING GUIDELINES

PREFACE The Board of Directors of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is pleased to release the 2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. From an institutional perspective, it marks the beginning of the cycle of release, testing, review, and revision under GRIs new governance structure. The GRI was launched in 1997 as a joint initiative of the U.S. non-governmental organisation Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES) and United Nations Environment Programme with the goal of enhancing the quality, rigor, and utility of sustainability reporting. The first set of GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines appeared as an Exposure Draft in 1999. Following testing and public comment, the GRI released the June 2000 Guidelines. The 2002 Guidelines represent the GRI Boards view of a consensus on a reporting framework at this point in time that is a blend of a diverse range of perspectives. There are numerous ways to use the 2002 Guidelines

"Career and Employment" Homereading

The Army has a motto: "Train hard, fight easy." In business, that translates as: "Plan hard, work easy." A simple, three-step approach to the business planning process helps. Step one is to plan exactly what you are going to sell. Step two is to calculate what it will cost to make the product or to deliver the service. Step three is to do market research in order to ensure that you will be able to sell enough products and/or services in order to cover all of the costs. If your plans forecast that you can make a profit then, quite literally, you are in business. If not, then you need to think of a new plan. People who can do this are called entrepreneurs. People who can't are called employees. In truth, step one is down to you it's your business and you can sell what you want. Remember that there are only two things that your business can sell: a product or a service. Think also about how and why people will buy from you. And also consider the

Most frequently, though, it took the form of participant observation. Partici- pant observation is a research approach in which the researcher becomes a spy of sorts. With disguised identity and intent, the investigator infiltrates the setting of interest and becomes a full-fledged participant in the group to be studied. So when I wanted to learn about the compliance tactics of encyclopedia (or vacuum cleaner, or portrait photography, or dance lesson) sales organizations, I would answer a newspaper ad for sales trainees and have them teach me their methods. Using sim- ilar but not identical approaches, I was able to penetrate advertising, public rela- tions, and fund-raising agencies to examine their techniques. Much of the evidence presented in this book, then, comes from my experience posing as a compliance professional, or aspiring professional, in a large variety of organizations dedicated to getting us to say yes.

It is of particular interest in the post-autistic economics (pae) context because NPM largely rests on the same ideology and epistemology as standard textbook economics (STE) is based (for my take on this, see Drechsler 2000), and it has had, and still has, similar results. Already more on the defensive within public administration (PA) than STE is within economics, NPM also shows that such major paradigm shifts in theory and policy may actually happen

Their brain power has made them financial barons of the world, the real estate moguls of the world, the titans of industry in every category. For example, George Soros, the financial wizard, made over a $billion just by anticipating rate of change in the exchange rate market. Money like that can cure a lot of the pathetic nature of Black people. That amount was made in just one day. Mr. Soros is not a military man. He is an immigrant just like the rest of Americans, but he is nonetheless a warrior for his people. He understands his role in defence of his people and other people with lesser means.
