Hoe to write an argumentative essay?

HOW TO WRITE AN ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY An argumentative essay is a formal, impersonal piece of writing in which the writer is either expected to give a balanced consideration of a particular topic, or to state their own opinion clearly and then support it by giving reasons. An essay should begin with an introduction in which some background information is given about the problem that is going to be discussed. The angle from which the problem is going to be looked upon in the essay is also stated. In longer essays these are in different paragraphs, in shorter ones they can be in one paragraph. The body of the essay usually consists of several paragraphs, the number of which depends on the length of the essay. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence. The following sentences should enlarge on the theme, give examples, etc. If it is an essay discussing the advantages and disadvantages of something, the advantages should be

The new equipment will not be installed for at least six months. Such a delay is clearly unacceptable to us. We should insist that ICN send their own engineer to service the equipment. The equipment should be transported to the ICN plant for inspection and repair there. When the ICN equipment was first introduced, it was found to provide a flexible and advanced system. Moreover, its speed of operation was greater than comparable hardware then available. However, in recent months major faults have developed in the equipment, and the local agent appears incapable of providing a reliable repair service. PHOTO COMPARISON (Solutions Upper Intermediate /Photos p. 140)  In picture 1 I can see a young Asian man being thrown up in the air by his course mates. The picture is taken somewhere outside as the man is wearing a coat.  In picture 2 I can see numerous students sitting their exam in a big hall.  The photos are connected with the topic of university  There are a few similarities between these two pictures. First, they both show young people making an effort. Second, picture 1 as well as picture 2 tell us about typical aspects of student life.  However, the pictures clearly differ from each other in several aspects. To start with, while the young man in p1 is obviously relaxing after winning a competition, the students in p2 are in the middle of writing their papers. Moreover, all people in picture 1

A century ago communication across any distance was dependent upon the telegraph or letters. No jets crossed the ocean, no television pictures enabled us instantly to see events in any part of the world, there were no worldwide telephone networks and no computers. It is just a short lifetime since humanity first travelled into space and discovered how fragile our planet looks. FROM FIREWORKS TO THE MOON At first glance you might think that there couldn't possibly be anything common between a 13 th century festival in China and the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. However, there is a link and that is that they both relied on the use of rockets. The Chinese first developed rockets by filling bamboo tubes with an explosive made from saltpetre, charcoal, and sulphur. The sealed tubes would be thrown onto fires during celebrations because it was thought that the loud explosions would protect them

The main question is what makes a human being happy? In my opinion, as a person claims that he is happy, then we can firmly say that this person is successful in life because he feels content with his life. Contentedness and happiness are the key factors in determing how succesful someone is. It is often said that for a small town inhabitant, it is a lot harder to achieve something in life. I totally disagree with this statement. There are just other values in a town with a small population density. Values concerning family life are coming more forth, career and such kind of personal ambitions are kept in the backround. Also it is often mentioned that making a successful career in a small town is largely impossible, because of the lack of different resources and opportunities. By these it is commonly ment a uncompetitive education and few opportunities to develop extracurricular activities

Due to the rapid expansion of technology over the past decade, hypermedia instructional programs have become commonplace. Learners of all ages have increased access to technology such as the World Wide Web, which provides a seemingly limitless amount of information. New technologies such as Mp3, podcasting, and social networking are booming. In contrast to more traditional environments, technology offers greater opportunities for interactivity and learner control. There are more educators and language teachers using the Internet in language teaching as well. Many computer applications, especially asynchronous computer-mediated communication such as email and electronic bulletin boards, promote interactive learning. With the booming growth of technology, blogs have become another learning platform for language teaching. Accordingly, these in turn have provided both teachers and learners with an alternative

Introduction Paragraph What is an introduction paragraph? The introduction paragraph is the first paragraph of your essay. What does it do? It introduces the main idea of your essay. A good opening paragraph captures the interest of your reader and tells why your topic is important. How do I write one? 1. Write the thesis statement. The main idea of the essay is stated in a single sentence called the thesis statement. You must limit your entire essay to the topic you have introduced in your thesis statement. 2. Provide some background information about your topic. You can use interesting facts, quotations, or definitions of important terms you will use later in the essay. Example: Hockey has been a part of life in Canada for over 120 years. It has evolved into an extremely popular sport watched and played by millions of Canadians. The game has gone through several changes since hockey was first played in Canada. Supporting Paragraphs

Company DATE: 6 April 2001 With reference to our telephone conversation of 5 April concerning the maintenance of field vehicles, 1 would like to confirm that the quality of the services provided by the Autocheck Maintenance Company has deteriorated noticeably during the last few weeks and that this has caused the company a number of difficulties. Although previously the work done by Autocheck on company vehicles has been quite satisfactory, there have recently been several indications of a deterioration. To give one example, on two occasions trucks have broken down within three days of receiving a full service. Moreover, two trucks were recently unavailable for use for five days because Autocheck failed to send out a mechanic when we contacted them. This happened despite the fact that their contract states that they will arrive within twentyfour hours of a call.

Negative stress can affect people's ability to be positive. I'd probably agree with the statement. To begin with, one of the main sources of stress for young people today can be relationships with parents. Everybody knows that fighting with parents can affect ours ability to be positive. Moreover, parents are the closest persons in our lives and fighting with them break us. For instance, I am always so depressed after arguing with my mother, I do not want to hurt her feelings. In my view, young people should avoid fighting with parents to cope with this source of stress.

The main reason for choosing this presentation was that I had read Steve Jobs's biographical book and there he talked how he liked to go for a walk when having a meeting and therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to get to know a bit more about something that I already know about. Also, I think that in the future, it pays off to know some easy tricks about how to make your meetings more interesting, more memorable and more healthier. Prior to this momentous event that heralds an evolutionary transformation in the life of plants, the planet had already been covered in vegetation for millions of years. The first flower probably did not survive for long, and flowers must have remained rare and isolated phenomena, since conditions were most likely not yet favorable for a widespread flowering to occur. One day, however, a critical threshold was reached, and suddenly there would have been an explosion of color and scent all over the planet – if a perceiving consciousness had been there to witness it. Much later, those delicate and fragrant beings we call flowers would come to play an essential part in the evolution of consciousness of another species. Humans would increasingly be drawn to and fascinated by them. As the consciousness of human beings developed, flowers were most likely the

VIDEO GAMES Video games, nowadays, are a new form of entertainment that has replaced traditional games. As everything in life, it has advantages, if they are used with coherence, but also disadvantages. On the one hand, you can have a good time alone. Besides, there are many logical games where it is possible to learn. Apart from being entertaining, they test your logic and skills. Video games can also improve your reflex actions and develop your imagination. On the other hand, video games can cause addiction and make you lose communication with your family and friends. People sometimes spend too much time in front of the screen, so they are not in the street with their friends. Furthermore, some video games are very aggressive and can influence our behaviour negatively. I believe that if video games are used properly and in the correct measure, they can be fun, but, in my opinion, it is much more interesting to be out with friends and enjoy the fresh air.

ENGLISH TOPICS - palju teemasid inglise keele riigieksami kordamiseks

The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavour that British haven't had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh pees or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream and spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious? If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say "Fish and chips" then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn't lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to a good English restaurant with a reasonable prices. In most cities in Britain you'll find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you'll also find Indonesian, Mexican, Greek... Cynics will say that this is because English have no "cuisine" themselves, but this is not quite the true. Vocabulary:
