PETROLEUM

Along with the burning of coal, petroleum combustion is the largest contributor to the increase in atmospheric CO2. Atmospheric CO2 has risen steadily since the industrial revolution to current levels of over 390 ppmv, from the 180 – 300 ppmv of the prior 800 thousand years, driving global warming. The unbridled use of petroleum could potentially cause a runaway greenhouse effect on Earth.[citation needed] So far, the Earth's temperature has been raised by almost an entire degree Celsius. This raise in temperature has reduced the Arctic ice cap to 1,100,000 sq mi (2,800,000 km2), smaller than ever recorded.Because of this melt, more oil reserves have been revealed. It is estimated by the International Energy Agency that about 13 per cent of the world's undiscovered oil resides in the Arctic. Extraction Oil extraction is simply the removal of oil from the reservoir (oil pool). Oil is often

Biogas – The source of future energy

The human excreta are supposed to occupy, at the most, 3% of the slurry. The addition of human excreta is crucial in this context as it increases the amount of production of biogas. This is because human excreta have high nitrogen content. The ideal temperature for producing biogas is within 35 to 38 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is lower than that then the production of biogas may go down as well. If the temperature is 15 degree Celsius then it would be impossible to produce any biogas. This is precisely the reason as to why thermal insulation is necessary to produce biogas when it is the winter season or at places where the temperatures are normally lower than the requisite level. The heating of digesters is also pretty important in this regard. The pH of the slurry has to be close to 7. This is pretty much possible provided that cow dung is employed in the form of a substrate.

sources of energy (hydropower, geothermal, wind, and solar) do not directly emit greenhouse gases. 3.2 Why Don't We Use More Renewable Energy? In the past, renewable energy has generally been more expensive to use than fossil fuels. Plus, renewable resources are often located remote areas and it is expensive to build powerlines to the cities where they are needed. The use of renewable sources is also limited by the fact that they are not always available (for example, cloudy days reduce solar energy, calm days mean no wind blows to drive wind turbines, droughts reduce water availability to produce hydroelectricity). The production and use of renewable fuels has grown more quickly in recent years due to higher prices for oil and natural gas, and a number of State and Federal Government incentives, including the Energy Policy Acts of 2002 and 2005. The use of renewable fuels is expected to continue to grow over the next 30 years, although we will still rely on

Wombats are Australian marsupials; they are shortlegged, muscular quadrupeds, approximately one metre in length and with a very short tail. The name wombat comes from the Eora Aboriginal community who were the original inhabitants of the Sydney area. Wombats dig extensive burrow systems with rodentlike front teeth and powerful claws. Although mainly crepuscular and nocturnal, wombats will also venture out to feed on cool or overcast days. They are not as easily seen as many animals, but leave ample evidence of their passage, treating fences as a minor inconvenience to be gone through or under and leaving distinctive cubic scats. Wombats are herbivores, their diet consisting mostly of grasses, sedges, herbs, bark and roots. The Tasmanian devil and the Tasmanian wolf are the only carnivores among marsupials and are almost extinct

Tower Bridge

Sir Albert Joseph Altman, to find a solution to the river crossing problem. It opened the design of the crossing to public competition. Over 50 designs were submitted. · Jones' engineer, Sir John Wolfe Barry, devised the idea of a bascule bridge 800 feet (244 m) in length with two towers each 213 feet (65 m) high, built on piers. The central span of 200 feet (61 m) between the towers was split into two equal leaves, which could be raised to an angle of 83 degrees to allow river traffic to pass. The leaves, weighing over 1,000 tons each, were balanced to minimize the force required and allow raising in five minutes. · Jones died in 1887 and George D. Stevenson took over the project. · Stevenson replaced Jones' original brick facade with the more ornate Victorian Gothic style, which makes the bridge a distinctive landmark. · The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales.

The weather on the British Isles has a bad reputation. It is very changeable and fickle. The British say that there is a climate in other countries, but we have just weather. If you don't like the weather in England, just wait a few minutes. It rains very often in all seasons in Great Britain. Autumn and winter are the wettest. The sky is usually grey and cold winds blow. On the average, Britain has more than 200 rainy days a year. The English say that they have 3 variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon, and when it rains all day long. Sometimes it rains so heavily, that they say «It's raining cats and dogs». Britain is known all over the world for its fogs. Sometimes fogs are so thick that it's impossible to see anything within a few meters. The winter fogs of London are, indeed, awful; they surpass all imagination

Structural loads

Kristiina Stõkova 105281, EAEI-33 Structural loads As everyone might know that great architecture is the successful marriage of art and technology and a structure is an artifact expressing one of the many aspects of human creativity, however it is an artifact that cannot be created without a deep respect for the laws of nature. And that is the main problem brought out by the author of the book ,,Why buildings stand up", Mario Salvadori. So why should an engineer consider different loads? the answer is simple - if the earth did not pull, the wind did not blow, the earth's surface did not shake or sink and the air temperature did not change, then loads would not exist and structure would be unnecessary. This would be so-called the Alice-in- Wonderland world of architecture. But in the real world the engineer's first job is to determine which loads will act on a structure and how strong they might be in extreme cases. This is anything

The Inchcape Rock

He removes a warning bell that warns sailors about a secret underwater rock. By doing this, he signs his own death sentence. At a dark night, he crashes his ship to the Rock, because there was no bell to warn him. In the first stanza of the poem Southey describes the surroundings. The tone of the poem is set, at the begging it is very serene and relaxed. The weather and sea are calm, the ship stands, undisturbed, in the water. The reader is supposed to feel joy and relax when this description is given, it brings to mind a sunny and warm summer-day, when everything is just perfect. The point on the first stanza is only to set the tone, it has no real artistic value. The second stanza states that there was no sign of the Inchcape Rock, which lay below the water surface. The water gave no sign of that deadly rock and the low, calm waves did not move, or sound the Inchcape Bell - the warning bell, put there to alert the sailors of a nearby peril. Southey

Planet venus

Venus Venus has been known since prehistoric times and the planet is named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love. It is the second-closest planet to the Sun and it`s often called Earth's "sister planet," because the two are similar in size, gravity, and bulk composition. Because of these similarities, it was thought that Venus might even have life. Venus is also called the Morning star or the Evening star, because it reaches its brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. It is the brightest object in the sky except for the Sun and the Moon. During the last few years the scientists have found that Venus and Earth are very different. It has no oceans and is surrounded by a heavy atmosphere composed mainly of carbon dioxide with virtually no water vapor. There are strong winds at the cloud tops but winds at the surface are very slow, no more than a few kilometers per hour. The surface of Venus retains a constant temperature between

Australia

History Sixty million years ago Australia and its nearby islands were separated from the rest of the world by a great upheaval. They were cut off from Asia by the ocean. Almost no animals and few people visited Australia before the English colonists. The first people in Australia were the Aborigines. They came there more than 50,000 years ago. They were the only inhabitants. They were living in the Stone Age. Their only weapons were simple spears and boomerangs. They raised no crops and had no heards of tame animals. For food the hunted, fished and gathered wild fruit and nuts. Their tribes had very well worked out customs. Chinese sailors visited Australia 2,500 years ago. Australia remained unknown for Europeans until 400 years ago and no European settled there until 1788. Doctors could not do their job without the help of many skilled professionals. Nurses, for example, work closely with doctors in the clinics, hospitals, and medical centres, Nurses also provide many services to patients independent of doctors. Various kinds of therapists give special treatments as ordered by the doctor, other skilled workers serve in clinics, medical laboratories, X-ray departments and operating theatres. 8. Ways of keeping health There's a lot of discussion these days about fitness. Being fit is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical activity (exercise), and has a healthy weight. If you're fit, your body works well, feels good, and can do all the things you want to do, like run around with your friends. So - being fit means being healthy. Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing in the hope that you can help me with a problem regarding a camera that I have bought recently. On 24 April, I purchased a Canon digital SLR camera from a duty-free shop at Freetown Airport on my way from Freetown to Wondercity. The camera cost $599, and I paid for it by credit card. When I arrived at my hotel in Wondercity almost 24 hours later, I discovered that the box which contained the camera did not include the battery, and the space in the box for the charger was empty. I am now in Wondercity, and I am not returning to Freetown, so I need to get the missing parts here. I would be grateful if you could arrange for the parts to be sent to me. I attach a copy of the receipt for your information. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours faithfully, Introduction This report looks at the dietary habits of twenty students in their final year at Freedonian Secondary School. Global Warming

We started doing harmful things and only now do we realize what we have done and what we are doing. At this current rate by the middle of next century the Earth's temperature may rise a predicted from 2 to 6 degrees Celsius. This may not seem as much but with the Earth's delicate balance we will have lost several species and habitats. Scientists are worried that soon the effects of what we have done may be irreversible. This temperature increase would drastically affect the growth of many different crops and cause the polar ice caps to melt, therefore increasing sea levels to rise up by several metres. Warmer oceans cause more intense storms. Buildings and roads close to the water will be flooded and they could suffer damage from hurricanes and tropical storms. The effects of a warmer climate may begin to take its toll on people as well. Particularly those who are physically weaker are going to have a harsh life

There is no specific matsuri days for all of Japan; dates vary from area to area, and even within a specific area, but festival days do tend to cluster around traditional holidays such as Setsubun or Obon. Almost every locale has at least one matsuri in late summer/early autumn, usually related to the rice harvest. Notable matsuri often feature processions which may include elaborate floats. Preparation for these processions is usually organized at the level of neighborhoods, or machi. Prior to these,

In 1045, he married Godwin's only daughter, Edith. Godwin was the most important nobleman in England. They had no children as Edward had taken a vow of celibacy. Even this marriage couldn't prevent a breach between Godwin and Edward in 1049. A number on Normans were killed in a scrap in Dover and Kent in 1051. Edward still had influential friends in Normandy and he wanted the people of Dover punhised for this. Edward asked Earl Godwin to be the punisher. After saying no to king he raised an army against Edward instead. The other two senior noblemen, the earls of Mercia and Northumbria, remained loyal to Edward. Later Edward outlawed Godwin and his family in Flanders. Between 1051 and 1052, Edward increased the number of Normans who advised him at court. Edward's continued favouritism caused problems with his nobles. In 1052 Godwin and his sons returned to England with an army. The army was commanded by his two sons Harold and Tostig.

MIINA HÄRMA GYMNASIUM Deserts Saudi-Arabia Tartu 2007 Deserts In geography, a desert is a landscape form or region that receives very little precipitation. Generally, deserts are defined as areas that receive an average annual precipitation of less than 250 mm (10 inches). Deserts cover at least one-fourth of the Earth's land surface. Desert biomes can be classified according to several characteristics.
