Estonian and British Education System

Estonian and British education system is not quite different . In Estonia, the education system is based on six levels which include the: kindergarten, primary school, basic school, secondary school and university or vocational school. In Britain , the education system is also based on six levels which include the: nursery school, infant school, junior school, secondary school, 6th form and university or college.
What is similar for both systems is that the first level of education starts at age of three. While in Estonia this level is called Kindergarten, then in Britain it is called Nursery school. Kindergarten is for children ´s from age three to six, but Nursery school is for children´s three to four .
Differently from Estonian system, at age of five to seven , British children ´s go to Infant school. This is called year one, year two and year three and all these three years are called key one. In Estonia, children´s from age seven to ten go to Primary school. This includes classes from one to four.
At age of eight to eleven, British children´s go to Junior school. It is divided into three parts: year four, year five and year six. And all this is called the key two. At age ten to fifteen , Estonian children´s go to Basic school. This includes classes from five to nine .
In Britain, after Junior school come ´s the Secondary school. There are children´s from age twelve to sixteen. This is divided into five forms . Forms one, two and three is called the key three and forms four and five is called the key four.
What is similar for both systems is that now comes the point where student can make a choice. In Estonia, student can choose Secondary school or Vocational school. Secondary school is divided into three classes: class ten, class eleven and class twelve. There are children´s from age sixteen to eighteen. In Vocational school student can choose his own speciality. In Britain, student can choose 6th form or Vocational school. In 6th form, there are student´s from age seventeen to eighteen. Just like the name says, 6th form is called form six and key five.
After that, smarter students go to the University. In Estonia, at age nineteen and in Britain at age nineteen. There student can get Bachelor, Master and Doctoral degree .
The examination system is also different. In Britain, students have to take every year Teacher exams. At the end of key two, they have to take National Curriculum Test (NCT). At age sixteen, they have to take the General Certificate of Secondary Education exam (GCSE). A-level is an Advanced level GCE qualification. This exam is normally taken after two years of A-level study .
In Estonia, at the end of basic education there are three final examinations: Mother tongue, Mathematics, and a chosen exam. At the end of secondary education there are five graduation examinations: Mother tongue, Mathematics, English language and two chosen exams. Also, in eleventh form you have to do research.
To conclude, the main differences between British and Estonian system are basically connected with school names and ages . British examination system differs from Estonian system largely. British system is more complicated than Estonian system.

Juhendaja: Koostanud: 2009 Differences between Estonian and USA school and education systems. Question is, how different are our own and this big country they call United States of America's education. Or maybe there is no difference at all, and our systems about school and education are more similar than they appear at first sight. After reading all the materials and all sorts of notes about USA's education systems and their school household. All at once I realized, that they are not so different at all. Like for example USA's kids have to go to school exactly the same amount of time as our Estonian children. And basically learn same amount of same things.
