The Californian Seventh-day Adventists study found vegetarian men to have significantly lower risk of coronary artery disease compared to non-vegetarians whereas vegetarian women were at the highest risk. The Oxford vegetarian study, on the other hand, found all vegans and vegetarians to have lower mortality rates when it came to coronary artery disease. Vegans were found to have the lowest cholesterol levels, lowest saturated fat intake and highest dietary fiber intake which are all associated with lower risk of coronary artery disease. A positive correlation between plant based diets and higher mortality rates was found.

Fast food is loaded with calories from refined sugar and fats .It is also very high in sodium, coming from common salt and other additives. On top of all this, fast food is deficient in dietary fiber and essential micro-nutrients like vitamins and minerals. To make matters worse, heaps of fast food are normally guzzled down with gallons of sugar- rich colas ­ which many fast-food restaurants serve free with food as an incentive. Soovitan patsiendil järgida DASH-toitumiskava (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), mis on näidustatud hüpertensiooniga patsientidele. Selle raames peab patsiendi menüüs olema kõige rohkem puu- ja köögivilju, täisteratooteid, kala, vähese rasvasisaldusega piimatooteid, linnuliha, ube, seemneid ja pähkleid.
