The platypus is a good swimmer and gets its food mainly from the river. It has a strong tail. It lives in the rivers of East Australia mostly. The echidna or a spiny ant-eater is the other egg-laying mammal that lives in Australia. It feeds on termites using its long, trunk-like nose to get them. In the seas and rivers of northern Australia you can find crocodiles that are five or six metres long. There are more than eight hundred kinds of birds in Australia. The emu, which is two metres tall, is the second largest bird in the world. It cannot fly at all, but it can run at fifty kilometres an hour. Then there is the kookaburra, whose cry sounds like someone laughing, and the budgerigar,a little blue or yellow bird that people keep in their homes all over the world. The lyrebird has got its name from the lyre-like tail of the he-bird.He can imitate all kinds of noises. The black swan is also found in Australia only

But today's Australia is one of the most urbanized countries in the world. For many years, Australia was a part of the British Empire, and the Anglo-Celtic heritage has greatly influenced the country's lifestyle. The traditional British supper is still very common, and barbecues ("the barbies", as Australians call it) are a typical Australian pastime. There is also the traditional Aboriginal cooking in Australia. It consists of such unique foods as kangaroo, wombat, turtle, eel, emu, and snake meat. Almost all Australians love sports. Soccer, rugby, cricket, cycling, bush walking (hiking), tennis, and golf are very popular among Australians of all ages. Australians love to celebrate their national holidays. Along with New Year's Day, Easter, and Christmas, they celebrate the Australia Day on January 26, the Queen's birthday, and they also have several festivals during a year. Two of the most important festivals are for Easter and Christmas.

Topic – Australia

It is known to both hunt prey and scavenge carrion and although it is usually solitary, it sometimes eats with other devils. It has a squat and thick build, with a large head and a short, stubby tail. The devil stores body fat in its tail and an unhealthy devil often has a thin tail. Unusually for a marsupial, its forelegs are slightly longer than its hind legs. Devils can run in bursts at the impressive speed of 13 kilometres per hour. Birds The Emu , is the largest bird native to Australia. The softfeathered, brown, flightless birds reach up to 2 m in height. The Emu is common over most of mainland Australia, although it avoids heavily populated areas, dense forest and arid areas. Emus can travel great distances at a fast, economical trot and, if necessary, can sprint at 50 km/h for some distance at a time. They are opportunistically nomadic and may

kangaroo. They have srong back legs and tails, they can jump more than 4 meters and travel at 70 kilometers an hour. Tke koalas live in eucalyptus trees, sleeping for 18 hours, and eating one kilo of leaves, each day. They drink almost nothing. Like kangaroos, they have a pouch on their front for their babies. Two very strange animals are the echidna and the plantypus. Their babies are born from eggs but drink milk from their mothers. There are more than 800 kinds of birds in Australia. The emu is a flightless bird. It is up to two meters tall and can run very fast. The birds are emu, black swan and cassowary, that are native to Austalia. The dingo was introduces by the aborigines. European settlers introduced cattle, sheep, horses, deer, foxes, rabbits, pigs and cats.

Australia Topic Koostas: Aineõpetaja: Tallinn 2011 Location Only one country in the world fills a whole continent. That country is Australia. The continent it fills is Australia, too. Australia, then, is both a country and a continent. If someone wants to make clear that he is speaking of the country, he may call it by its full name of Commonwealth of Australia. Sixty million years ago Australia and its nearby islands were separated from the rest of the world by a great upheaval. They were cut off from Asia by the ocean. Very few people and almost no animals visited Australia before English colonists began to settle there in 1788. During all those 60 million years the native Australian mammals developed by themselves, undisturbed by the animals developing elsewhere. Australia is the only continent except Antarctica that is all south of the equator. It's name means "southland". Si

Australia.

It consists of a shield containing the badges of six Australian states, enclosed by an ermine border. The shield is a symbol for the federation of the states, which took place in 1901. The crest, which is above the shield, is a seven-pointed gold star on a blue and gold wreath. The seven points of the star represent exactly the same thing that they do on the flag. The supporters of the shield are native Australian animals: the red kangaroo and the emu. Usually the coat of arms is depicted on the background of sprays of golden wattle with a scroll beneath it containing the word `Australia'. Australia's national anthem is `Advance Australia Fair', which replaced `God Save the Queen' in 1984. It was written by a Scottish-born composer, Peter Dodds McCormick. The unofficial anthem of Australia is `Waltzing Matilda'. It tells a story about a swagman, who has named his sleeping blanket Matilda
