ARVO PÄRT Arvo Pärt is an Estonian composer of classical and sacred (vaimulik) music. He was born 11. september 1935 in Paide, Järva County, Estonia and was raised by his mother and stepfather in Rakvere. While at the Tallinn Conservatory, he studied composition with Heino Eller. During the 1950s, he also completed his first vocal composition, the cantata Meie aed for children's choir and orchestra. He graduated in 1963. From 1957 to 1967, he worked as a sound producer for Estonian Radio. In the 1970s, he studied medieval (keskaja) and Renaissance music rather than to focus on his own music. About this same time, he converted from Lutheranism to the Russian orthotox (vene õigeusk) faith. In 1980, after a prolonged struggle with Soviet (NSVL) officials, he was allowed to emigrate with his wife and their two sons. He lived first in Vienna, where he took Austrian citizenship (kodakondsus) and then relocated to Berlin, Germany, in

period of the National Awakening. Choirs and brassbands were founded in every corner of Estonia, it culminated with the 1 st Song Festival in 1869. Since then the Song Festivals have taken place every 4-5 years and have certainly helped Estonians maintain their national identity. Tallinn is the seat of the Estonian National Opera. The Chamber Choir of the Estonian Philharmonic Society is also greatly appreciated thanks to the charisma and hard work of its long-time ex- conductor Tõnu Kaljuste and Paul Hillier. Male voice and boys' choirs are equally popular. There are also many pop singers and groups such as Koit Toome, Eda- Ines Etti, Vanilla Ninja, Terminaator, Bedwetters and Traffic. In the middle of the 19th century F. R. Kreutzvald published the national epic Kalevipoeg, based on themes from Estonian folklore. Then national art began to develop. The first Estonian born artist, Johann Köler, depicted Estonian peasants and the countryside in his paintings

Art Museum of Estonia

There are separate rooms in the palace that have been adjusted for arranging temporary exhibitions. The Baltic-German prints about the Kadriorg palace and park are displayed in a separate room. The engravings and lithographs with views of Kadriorg by the 19th-century masters like J. Hau, Th. Gehlhaar, L. H. Petersen and others make the visitors realize the historical significance of the palace ensemble and its importance in local cultural context. A collection of Estonian, Russian and English silver- and goldsmiths' works was added to the Kadriorg Art Museum's exhibition on the 8th of March in 2002. Silver Chamber is open during the opening hours of the museum (exept 13-14).
