The most attractive decoration to go with the folk costume is the set of silver jewellery: numerous necklaces and a conic brooch worn by married women. The handicraft of Seto women is fine and colourful. Seto people are known for their original runic verse folk song - leelo. A Leelo choir consists of a chanter and the choir. The chanter is a good improviser. The verses recited by the chanter are repeated by the choir. One of the singers in the choir sings the kille - the highest pitch. The most outstanding chanters came to be called lauluimä (the mother of songs). The best chanters were able to recite 10 000 - 20 000 verses. The Seto folk dance is called kargus. Men and women dance separately, not in pairs. At earlier times in each village there was at

#!p_174824 Song Celebrations and Song Festival traditions Song Celebrations and Song Festival traditions are among the best known trademarks of Estonia. No wonder, as the scale of our Song festivals is unique in the world. Once every five years, the Estonian song festival grounds (Lauluväljak in Tallinn) are filled with folk costumes and smiling people. Imagine tens of thousands of singers forming one huge choir and hundreds of thousands of people sitting on the grass to hear traditional choir music no wonder it shocks, surprises and mesmerises overseas visitors! What makes it even more special is that, due to the small population of Estonia, there are less than million Estonian speakers and yet, a tenth of them attend the event. Long established song festival traditions are most likely the reason why Estonians not known for our pop-

Estonian teen How do you spend your free time? I'm pretty busy. Every day, I have music school, choir, or basketball training. I have been going to music school for seven years, and I'm going to graduate this spring. I have been going to basketball training for two years. I unfortunately can't go there very often because of music studies. When I'm home, I usually spend my free time on the computer or playing the guitar. What do you like / dislike about living in Võru? I learn guitar in X Music School. Guitar, and music in general, is my greatest passion. I find makeing and listening music relaxing. I also have solfedzo and music history lessons in Music School. I'm attending youth choir of my school. Choir singing is very popular in Estonia, because it's big part of our culture. I take part of student representive and drama group ,,X". I'm also participant in several youth projects, which include integrating national minorities and giving information about healthcare. About the sport, I used to take part of swimming trainings, but this year training times don't fit for me, so I'm going to swim and gym on my own twice a week. I'm also into skiing, but this sport can be done only in winter

scholarship to study at the prestigious St. Michael's School in Lüneburg, not far from the northern seaport of Hamburg, one of the largest cities in the Holy Roman Empire. This involved a long journey with his friend, probably undertaken partly on foot and partly by coach. His two years there appear to have been critical in exposing him to a wider palette of European culture than he would have experienced in Thuringia. In addition to singing in the a cappella choir, it is likely that he played the School's three-manual organ and its harpsichords. He probably learned French and Italian, and received a thorough grounding in theology, Latin, history, geography, and physics. He would have come into contact with sons of noblemen from northern Germany sent to the highly selective school to prepare for careers in diplomacy, government, and the military. Although little supporting historical evidence exists at this time, it is almost certain that while in

There should be no compulsory school subjects

There should be no compulsory school subjects. Students should be allowed to choose subjects they want to study. In school students do not want to learn some subjects, still they have to do it. Some lessons may not like for pupils. For example, students have to learn foreign languages, be in a choir or do psychical educaion even if they do not like it at all. However, should there be compulsory subjects or should there be not? On the one hand, students do not work hard if they are not interested in the subject. Then they just waste their time doing nothing important. Also, if there are the subjects the student wants then there is no more undone homework, distracting or undiscipline. Furthermore, there are many students together wanting to learn the same thing and the associate of them

It is held every five years in July on the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds simultaneously with the Estonian Dance Festival. The joint choir has comprised more than 30,000 singers performing to an audience of 80,000. Estonia is unique because of traditions and people in Estonia and also our current president Toomas-Hendrik Ilves who is extremely modern as in taking ’selfies’ during the Estonian Song Festival. Arvustus Briti talent

9. Viimasena esines Presentation School Choir. See on koor Iirimaalt Kilkennyst, kooris on 62 liiget. Minule isiklikult meeldis kõige rohkem neljas esitus, kus Jasmine Elcock laulis Birdy lugu "Wings"

Houses of parliament

St. Stephen's hall is the central meeting place where constituents can meet or "lobby" their Members of Parliament. It is from here that you will be shown your direction either to the House of Lords or Commons. An incendiary bomb destroyed the House of Commons in 1941. A reconstruction of Barry's original design for the house, taken from St. Stephen's chapel, the commons old meeting place, was completed in 1950. The seating arrangement in the house is reminiscent of choir stalls, the members of the cabinet sit on the front benches while opposition senior members sit directly opposite. The distance between the benches marked out on the floor in red lines, is exactly two sword lengths and one foot apart. Members are not allowed to cross these lines, thus ensuring that debates are kept orderly. In the centre of the floor stands the Table of the House, on which the mace is placed at the start of each parliamentary sitting; this is the Speaker's sceptre

The virtual world becomes more important. TV is absolutely irrelevant to real living. No surprise that television is often called "chewing gum for men's brains." People become lazy, instead of doing sports they watch TV. Television takes free time of the people. Instead of joining a choir or playing football or reading books people watch various programmes. Dinnertime is often pressed by television if it is not in the kitchen. If people are deprived for various reasons of watching their favourite programmes they feel inconvenience. The best thing is to watch only selective TV programmes and not to be governed by them. Only few people today can live without television. It should be said that television continues to

Theater of Tallinn

The current Estonia house - a representative building in the heart of Tallinn - opened the doors in the summer of 1913. The building was designed by Finnish architects Armas Lindgren and Wiwi Lonn. The "Estonia" theatre has had several names during history, but since 1998, it bears the name The Estonian National Opera. From 1994 the theater is managed by the general manager Paul Himma. The Estonian National Opera is the home of the symphony orchestra, the opera choir and the ballet. The theater repertoire includes classical operas, ballets and operettas as well as modern musical and children plays. The most popular performances are "Swan Lake" and the opera "La Traviata". The Estonian National Opera's majestic White Hall (218,8 m2) with its grand crystal chandeliers is an excellent place for festive receptions, formal occasions and dancing parties. The hall is provided with removable chairs (for 100 people) and tables. In the Opera House,

He was an outgoing man, loved to eat and drink, and his title of nobility unlocked the hearts of many a woman for him. Before passing away, he repented of his sinful life and asked his kin to bury him next to the main portal of the church. All church-goers would then step over his gravestone and his sins would be redeemed. P o r g a s s a a r, Kristina; A l j a s, Eva-Grete; K u u s k e m a a, Jüri. Tallinn: Medieval capital. German merchants. While Tallinn was still unfortified, the church with heavy bars for closing the entrances, loopholes and hiding places for refugees served also military purposes. When the fortifications around the town were completed in the 14th century, the St. Nicholas' Church lost its defensive function and became a typical medieval parish church. In the 15th century large-scale reconstructions, in the cause of which the choir and the three- aisled main body got their present appearance, were undertaken. The Baroque spire with airy galleries was raised higher stage by stage through several centuries. During the Soviet air-raid on March 9, 1944 the St. Nicholas' Church and the buildings surrounding it were severely damaged. The most precious art treasures survived merely thanks to their timely evacuation from the church. Hence, besides Baroque epitaphs and other masterworks of carving, a remarkable

Referaat Elton John'ist

he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. One of his instructors reports that, when he entered the Academy, she played a four-page piece by Handel, which he promptly played back like a "gramophone record." For the next five years, John took the tube (subway) into central London to attend Saturday classes at the Academy, in addition to his regular school duties at Pinner Country Grammar School. John has since stated that he enjoyed playing Chopin and Bach and singing in the choir during Saturday classes, but that he was not otherwise a diligent classical student. "I kind of resented going to the Academy," he says. "I was one of those children who could just about get away without practicing and still pass, scrape through the grades." He even claims that he would sometimes skip classes and just ride around on the Tube. However, several instructors have testified that he was a "model student," and during the last few years he was taking lessons from a private

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Muusikakool (Higher School of Music) was established in Tallinn in 1919 (in 1923 renamed Conservatoire). Lüdig became the first director of the institution. At the same time a similar school was opened in Tartu. In 1921 Lauljate Liit (The Singers’ League) was organised, its first chairman was the choral composer and conductor Konstantin Türnpu (1865-1927). The activities of the League were wide-ranging: organisation of national and regional song festivals, choir and brass band concerts, competitions for developing new repertoire, and music publishing. The League issued Muusikaleht (Music Magazine), reflecting musical life in Estonia and offering reviews of music events in the world. Eesti Akadeemiline Helikunstnike Selts (The Academic Society of Estonian Musicians) was established in 1924 as a central organisation to promote national music, to publish works of different genres of music, to commission musical competitions, and to award scholarships

on his visits to Tallinn while the palace was being built. Visitors can admire several of his possessions. Russalka (The Mermaid) on the seashore is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of Tallinn. It was made by Amandus Adamson in 1902 and commemorates the Russian armoured ship (of the same name) and her crew which sank in the Gulf of Finland in 1893. The Song Festival Dais, built in 1960, is the site of the famous Estonian song festivals. The stage was designed for a choir of more than 30,000. The biggest audience (300,000, which was approximately a third of Estonians in Estonia at the time) gathered in 1988 for the most special of all song festivals, called the Singing Revolution, while Estonia was still a Soviet Republic. There is also a monument to the centenary of the song festival (unveiled in 1969) and a stone wall carrying memorial plaques for all the festivals. Pirita

were often accompanied by a musical instrument. Today folksongs are often used by modern composers. A major change in Estonian culture occurred during the period of the National Awakening. Choirs and brassbands were founded in every corner of Estonia, it culminated with the 1 st Song Festival in 1869. Since then the Song Festivals have taken place every 4-5 years and have certainly helped Estonians maintain their national identity. Tallinn is the seat of the Estonian National Opera. The Chamber Choir of the Estonian Philharmonic Society is also greatly appreciated thanks to the charisma and hard work of its long-time ex- conductor Tõnu Kaljuste and Paul Hillier. Male voice and boys' choirs are equally popular. There are also many pop singers and groups such as Koit Toome, Eda- Ines Etti, Vanilla Ninja, Terminaator, Bedwetters and Traffic. In the middle of the 19th century F. R. Kreutzvald published the national epic Kalevipoeg, based on themes from Estonian folklore
