song "My Country 'tis of Thee" which was considered America's national anthem before the ‘’Star-Spangled Banner’’. By including this phrase throughout the speech, along with the entire first verse, Martin Luther King attempts to unite the people with a common dream of freedom by using an inspirational lyric that is well known across America. Repeating such phrases makes the speech more memorable and compelling. The use of symbolism is also prevalent throughout this speech. This can easily be seen in the following sentence: ‘’I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight’’. Martin Luther King uses the valleys, hills, mountains and rough places to symbolically represent racial inequalities and hardships across the land that must be corrected

The creation of the `Union Jack' was initiated during what can be considered a new era of British national flags, after the succession of the Stuart dynasty to the throne and during the growth of British naval power. 10 The first reference to the Union flag dates from a proclamation of 12 April 1606 declaring the personal union of the symbolism and ceremonies. The Cross of St. Patrick, as part of the crowns of Scotland and England, when King James VI of Scotland (1567-1625) ascended the English throne, thereby becoming James I of Great Britain (1603-25). (Smith, 1975) The design of the first union flag was formed by superimposing the Red Cross of England on top of the White Saltire of Scotland. However, the flags of England and Scotland continued to be flown separately on land.
Fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) – they could add to social value, but rather fulfil a definite purpose. Decisions on these kinds of brands are done rather quickly. The decision to even buy something in that product category is a simple need. The products don’t also differ too much from each other. In branding, it is thus essential to portray the relative advantages in a direct way. High-involvement products – things that portray social symbolism and status. These products are more expensive, they depict social class and are leveraged for acceptance to those classes. There is uncertainty and risk involved in this buy. There is often post buy regret and rationalisation for the reason of that buy. To reduce the risk, the difference with competition needs to be delivered to the customer. The brand has to be portrayed unique and therefore has to be perceived more valuable (as it is more expensive).

Hy...

Psychology Gleitman Blood flow in the brain during different activities: the rate of blood flow is measured by special radiation counters that are placed at various points of the skull and that monitor radiation from mildly radioactive gas injected into the bloodstream. Blood flow pattern depends on what the patient does ( different pattern is found when person is reading aloud, yet another when he watches a moving light and so on). Ambiguous sights and sounds: The way ambiguous figures are perceived often depends on what we have seen just before. For example, if we are first shown an unambiguous figure of a rat, the ambiguous picture will be seen as a rat. If we are first exposed to an unambiguous face, we see the ambiguous figure as a face. What holds for visual patterns also holds for language. Many utterances are ambiguous. If presented out of context, they can be undestrood in several different ways. For exam...

English literature is one of the oldest literatures in Europe; dates back to the 6th century AD. Oral literature, i.e. not written down, spread from person to person. In 449 AD Anglo-‐Saxon tribes invaded England – beginning of the Anglo-‐Saxon period in English literature. The first form of literature was folklore, carried by scops and gleemen, who sang in alliterative verse (a kind of simple poetry). Prose developed much later. The first form of recorded English literature was the epic Beowulf, which was produced sometime near the end of the 7th and beginning of the 8th century. It has no ...
STYLISTICS 1. Style, stylistics, a survey of stylistic studies The term ,,style" is polysemantic. Latin ,,stilus"--a writing instrument used by the ancients for writing on waxed tablets. The ‘matematization’ of Logic Syllogisms have been the main form of argument studied in logic for 2000 years (from Aristotle to the 19th Century). It was believed that all arguments, even every complex ones, could ultimately be reduced to a series/combination of syllogisms. However, in the 19th Century, the limitations of this theory became clear and new formalisms were developed. The idea was to handle more complicated problems, more efficiently, with the aid of mathematical symbolism. Propositions In Propositional Logic, the fundamental units are statements (propositions). Propositions might be simple or compound. A Simple proposition does not contain any other proposition. It rains Tallinn is the Capital of Estonia A Compound proposition contains at least one simple proposition. If it rains, then I will take my umbrella. It is not the case that Tallinn is the Capital of Estonia. Connectives
Criticism of Realist literary method. Literary modernism: end of the 19th century-1920 (reached its height) and ended 1940s. A self- conscious break with traditional aesthetic forms. Rejecting the sentiment and discursiveness typical of Romanticism and Victorian literature for poetry that instead favored precision (täppis) of imagery and clear, sharp language. Modernist writers embraced the unconscious fears of a darker humanity. Sub movements: surrealism, formalism, avant-garde, symbolism, imagism Structuralism: Writers used myth and music as a part of the books structure. J. Joyce "Ulysses". Deep structure is the same as in "odyssey" and T.S. Elliot "the fisher king"-more complicated experiment. Aldous Huxley ,,point counter point"-builds his chapters on principles of music. R. Aldington ,,death of a hero"-a jazz novel. Polyphony-harmony. Cacophony Virginia Woolf ,,the waves"-symphony. Psychoanalysis: The greatest influence of psychoanalysis on literary production has

works from Scandinavia and Europe, and an influential role was played by the journals Noor-Eesti (1910-1911) and Vaba Sõna (Free Word, 1914-1916). This important development was due to a change in the general world-view, and the widening and deepening national consciousness. At its height (the years before the First World War) the Young Estonians immersed themselves in the ideas of Western philosophy and art (Impressionism, Symbolism etc), obviating Russian and German influences, initially Scandinavian ones were emphasised, followed by other European ideas. The needs of an evolving cultural society directed the attention of the literary intelligentsia and artists towards the great Western cultural centres, many went to study in Helsinki, Berlin, Paris, and so on. However, Estonian composers were not very eager to study in the West (exceptions being: Adalbert Wirkhaus in Leipzig with Max Reger, and Juhan Simm in
Like the tragic, fairy-tale story of Princess Diana, the events around the sinking of the Titanic fall into dramatic patterns that harmonize with deep, archetypal images, shared and understood by everyone. 246 EPILOGUE: LOOKING BACK ON THE JOURNEY S Y M B O L I S M OF "TITANIC" From its archaic, archetypal name on down, the Titanic is laden with symbolism and meaning. Late in the afternoon of December 2, Tokyo time, the force picked up, apparently on a blanket broadcast, an electrifying open-code message intended for it: NIITAKA-YAMA NOBORE ("Climb Mount Niitaka"). It informed the strike force that the decision for war had been made and directed it to proceed with attack. Niitaka-yama, also known as Mount Morrison, is a peak on Formosa whose 12,956-foot elevation made it the highest point of what was then the Japanese empire. The symbolism could not have been lost on the officers. The force refueled from its tankers.
