20th - Century Archaisms "Among the technological archaisms I've had to explain to the Tuned In children--what a 'record' is, why they call it 'dialing' a phone, the fact that, once, you couldn't rewind TV shows--is the fact that, a long time ago, musicians used to make little movies of their songs, and people would watch them on TV."

Theatres in Estonia

and the "Estonia" in Tallinn, could become professional, and in 1911 the "Endla" of P ärnu joined them. Theatre became especially popular amongst Estonians in the second half of the 19th century. Before that time, theatre had mostly been staged in German for the benefit of the local nobility and merchants. Theatre in Estonian emerged in various song and drama societies, the strongholds of national thought. In the early 20th century, these societies turned into professional theatres, some of which, the national opera Estonia for example, function even today. The scheme from society to theatre is a general phenomenon, because all the present state theatres once belonged to societies. Theatre played an important role in advancing and safeguarding the spirit of Estonians during both the period of last century's national awakening and the oppression of the Soviet regime. After the restoration of Estonia's

public and how he suffered because of that. I think everyone of us have had those embarrassing moments in our life where would have been liked to sink through the floor. I think the same emotion was very well passed on in this film. I was impressed by the film and based on my personal emotions I dare to recommend this film also to those who normally do not go for historical films or dramas. I suggest it because it gives insight into the royal life of 20th century England through the story which cannot keep anyone indifferent. For those who do not trust my view, I would like to add that the film has also nominated for Oscars in 12 categories which is more than any film before - and believing forecasts by the film critics it will certainly get at least one golden man. Thus worth to see anyway!

Essay about necessaty of zoos

Zoos are sometimes seen as necessary alternatives to a natural environment. Not only people are trying to keep endangered species and rare animals in the nature reserves, but also the number of zoos built around the world is slowly growing. Do we actually need those kind of man-made "homes" for animals or is it better for them to live outside cement walls in their natural habitat? First of all, nowadays we need to help the nature and animals that are the ones facing quite big danger of becoming extinct. Mostly it is caused by our selfish attitude: we do not take care of nature. Zoo is one of the solutions to help to preserve nature and to protect it from poachers. For example Loxodonta africana is an African elephant who has been hunt down and whose population was significantly reduced in 20th century. The population in the Tanzanian Selous Game Reserve, once the largest of any reserve in the world, dropped from 109 000 in ...

The British - Who Are They?

The British Who are they? The British are world famous on almost all walks of life. Their culture is rich and varied. Theatre The British have a tradition of theatre. Long, long time ago the culture of theatre was introduced from Europe to the British by the Romans. Many auditoriums were constructed across the country. The most famous British playwright is obviously William Shakespeare. He lived from 1564 to 1616. During that time he wrote about 40 plays, which are still played and used in today's theatre. His plays are performed more often than those of any other playwright. The first professional woman playwright was Aphra Behn. Nowadays there are not so many world famous dramatists in England but the memory of William Shakespeare and many others has preserved until today. Important modern playwrights include Alan Ayckbourn, John Osborne, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, and Arnold Wesker. Music Many British music composers have ma...

Parliament for the University. It was first held by Isaac Barrow and then in 1669 by Isaac Newton. Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. With Roger Penrose he showed that Einstein's General Theory of Relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes. These results indicated that it was necessary to unify General Relativity with Quantum Theory, the other great Scientific development of the first half of the 20th Century. One consequence of such a unification that he discovered was that black holes should not be completely black, but rather should emit radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear. Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This would imply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science. His many publications include The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime with G F R Ellis,

He did not die at all, but went back up to Heaven to be with God, his father. The Traditional Egg Gift The first eggs given at Easter were birds eggs. These eggs were painted in bright colours to give them further meaning as a gift As chocolate became more wide spread in the 20th Century, a chocolate version of the traditional painted egg was developed. The size of the chocolate egg has grown over the years and is now more likely to be the size of an ostrich egg rather than a small birds egg. Special Food Boiled eggs are traditionally served at breakfast, then Easter cards and gifts may be exchanged Roast lamb, which is the main dish at Jewish Passover, is the traditional meat for the main meal on Easter Day. Arthur Conan Doyle

Public outcry led him to bring the character back; Conan Doyle returned to the story in "The Adventure of the Empty House", with the explanation that only Moriarty had fallen but, since Holmes had other dangerous enemies, he had arranged to be temporarily "dead" also. Holmes ultimately appears in a total of 56 short stories and four Conan Doyle novels (he has since appeared in many novels and stories by other authors). Following the Boer War in South Africa at the turn of the 20th century and the condemnation from around the world over the United Kingdom's conduct, Conan Doyle wrote a short pamphlet titled, The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct, which justified the UK's role in the Boer war, and was widely translated. Conan Doyle believed that it was this pamphlet that resulted in 1902 in his being knighted and appointed Deputy-Lieutenant of Surrey. He also in 1900 wrote the longer book, The Great Boer War

The name Winnipeg comes from the Cree words meaning muddy water, referring to Lake Winnipeg 60 kilometres to the north. The Winnipeg area was a trading centre for Aboriginal peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans. The first fort was built near the Forks of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers in 1738 by French traders. A settlement was later founded by the Selkirk settlers in 1812, the nucleus of which was incorporated as the City of Winnipeg in 1873. Globaalne soojenemine (inglise keeles)

GLOBAL WARMING Global warming is the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of Earth's climate system. Since 1971, 90% of the increased energy has been stored in the oceans, mostly in the 0 to 700m region. Despite the oceans' dominant role in energy storage, the term "global warming" is also used to refer to increases in average temperature of the air and sea at Earth's surface. Since the early 20th century, the global air and sea surface temperature has increased about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980.Each of the last three decades has been successively warmer at the Earth's surface than any preceding decade since 1850. More than 90% certain that most of global warming was being caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities. In 2010 that finding

SETTING Everything takes place in England in the beginning of the 20th century. Then was World War I. LANGUAGE and STYLE Sentences were quite long and quite complicated. Language was very difficult, because it's a very old book, very hard to understand. It was hard to read. Plot was confusing. WHOM DO I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK? I would recommended this novel to people, who likes crime novels and sentences which are difficult and of course them, who likes Agatha Christie.

were also taken to help the farmers. In 1941 the United States entered the Second World War when Japan attacked the Hawaiian Islands. The war ended in 1945 when the USA dropped the atomic bombs on two Japanese cities and made Japan to surrender. Today about 30 million of 260 million Americans are black. When they were freed after the Civil War, the Southerners were angry at them and showed a lot of prejudice. Until in 1870 the blacks didn't have civil rights or the right to vote. In the 20th century many blacks travelled to the North but even there they were treated differently. In the 1950s a black churchman by the name Martin Luther King started to fight for black people and said that they were equal to white people. After 1963 when he held his famous speech "I have a dream...", in 1964 the blacks were given same rights as the white. In 1968 King was murdered. The 1950s are known as the time of Cold War because of the competition with the Soviet Union

Women didn't have many rights that they do nowadays. They couldn't: own property sue people vote At the same time, women participated in the paid workforce in increasing numbers after the Industrial Revolution. Feminist ideas started to spread and the suffragette movement gained momentum. Suffragettes Suffragettes were members of women's organization (right to vote) movements in the late 19th and early 20th century, particularly in the United Kingdom and United States. Suffragist is a more general term for members of suffrage movements, whether radical or conservative, male or female. Women's suffragists in the United Kingdom was a national movement that began in 1872. Britain in WW I

Germany seeing Russia mobilizing, declared war on Russia. France was then drawn in against Germany and Austria- Hungary. Germany attacked France through Belgium pulling Britain into war. Then Japan entered the war. Later, Italy and the United States would enter on the side of the allies. Imperialism: empires got bigger and with that the competition between the empires grew. Everyone wanted more areas for themselves. Militarism: at the start of 20th century, an arms race had started. Nations had more technology and manpower than ever before and started making armies and new weapons. Nationalism: Much of the origin of the war was based on the desire of the Slavic peoples in Bosnia and Herzegovina to no longer be part of Austria-Hungary but instead be part of Serbia. But in a more general way, the nationalism of the various

The monastery was destroyed in 1581 during the military campaign of Stefan Batory, the King of Poland. A little aside from the church is Lake Mõla the water of which is very clear and deep. Sigova Seto Farm Museum, the subsidiary of the Izborsk Museum is located in the village of Radaja, Pechory district, in a pristine farmstead that once belonged to the Külaots family. The display provides an insight to the life-style of a Seto family of the early 20th century. Many of the objects exhibited still bear the warmth of the hands of their previous owners.Visitors can acquaint themselves with different domestic crafts like spinning or weaving, also with various farm tools, probably the most intriquing of which is a device for handling flax. Through centuries Border Hill has served as a natural border for many states. Today we can see the Piiripettäi, a pine tree on the slope of the hill marking the border of Setomaa. Earlier borders were

city, hosting domestic, commercial and religious functions, and retaining the upper town as the administrative centre of the country. Nevertheless increasingly historic residential buildings are being refurbished for touristic or public use and thus subject to increased life safety and accessibility requirements. The authentic setting of the inscribed World Heritage property includes some significant architecture from the late 19th century and early 20th century including theatres and schools as well as a number of exceptional wooden suburbs which form an integral part of the historic, urban fabric round Tallinn Old Town. Until recently the survival of the wooden quarters was threatened by unclear ownership in the years following independence and in a general indifference to the qualities they offered residents. This latter could be seen in a lack of maintenance, and inappropriate upgrading and repair approaches

strongly felt. Its narrow cobbled streets, medieval buildings with various decorative elements, attractive weather-vanes and soaring spires are very special and draw visitors in large numbers. Only a few town in northern Europe have medieval districts as well preserved as in Tallinn. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The rest of the capital could be called the New Town, dating mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Tallinn is a mixture of the modern and the medieval where tradition goes hand in hand with the most recent trends. Its cross-cultural history has given the city a special charm. It has about 30 museums, 25 galleries and 15 exhibition halls. Among its many twin towns and partners are Helsinki in Finland, Schwerin and Kiel in Germany, Stockholm and Malmö in Sweden, Gent in Belgium, Venice in Italy and Odessa in the Ukraine. 2. Toompea

in its rooms, but the street name remained in the form of Süsterstrasse and Cisternstrasse. It was not until the 18th century that the name Lai also started to appear. In 1872, when the street names were being fixed, Lai remained the sole name of the street. 4 1 Lai Street / 4 Nunne Street A good example of Neo-Renaissance and early Art Nouveau styles combined is Lai Street 1, the present Youth and Puppet Theatre, erected at the beginning of the 20th century as the Nobility Club. The three-storey building replaces two medieval properties. In 1784 an amateur theatre began playing in a house situated in the same place and soon became a professional German City Theatre. The famous German writer August von Kotzebue (1761-1819), the life and soul of the theatre, lived in Tallinn for several long periods. companies struggled to compete against imported goods and clamored for tariff protection. The cotton interests led the country into war with Mexico. Cotton was a staple that could be stored for long periods and shipped long distances, unlike most agricultural food production. Paradoxically, the cotton gin, a labor-saving device, helped preserve the weakening arguments for slavery, since cheap (slave) labor was needed to pick cotton. Later, the 20th century invention of the cotton-picker reduced the labor-intensive demands of cotton farming, and brought unemployment to many poor Southerners. By the late 1790s, Whitney was on the verge of bankruptcy and cotton gin litigation had left him deeply in debt. His New Haven cotton gin factory had burned to the ground, and litigation sapped his remaining resources. The French Revolution had ignited new conflicts between Great Britain, France, and the United States

of Tasmania. The Tasmanian devil is about one metre long and it is usually black. It eats small mammals and lizards and even dead animals. As it is a marsupial, its babies grow up in its pouch. The Tasmanian tiger (often also known as the Tasmanian wolf) also lived on Tasmania a hundred years ago. It had stripes on its back like a tiger. It was more than 1.5 metres long. Scientists believe that hunters killed all of them at the beginning of the 20th century. The egg-laying mammals are the strangest of all the Australian animals. They lay eggs like birds and feed their young with milk as mammals do.They form a link between birds and mammals. The platypus or the duck-bill is one of them. The female lays two eggs in a nest of leaves and grass at the end of a burrow in a river bank. When the young come out of the eggs , they start eating the milk that comes through the mother's stomach skin. The
