20th - Century Archaisms "Among the technological archaisms I've had to explain to the Tuned In children--what a 'record' is, why they call it 'dialing' a phone, the fact that, once, you couldn't rewind TV shows--is the fact that, a long time ago, musicians used to make little movies of their songs, and people would watch them on TV."

Finished topic- mass media

MASS MEDIA By ''mass media '' we intend to those means of communication which can reach large or mass audiences. The most important are probably Television, Radio, the Press and Internet. The English-speaking peoples have always allowed more freedom of speech and of the press than most other countries. This gave them an advantage from the start in communications. The ground work for mass communications in the 20th century was laid in the 19th century by two inventions which allowed people to communicate by wire. These were the electric telegraph and the telephone. The telegraph was invented in Britain in 1837. They were being used in the Civil war. It allowed messages to be sent electrically over telegraph wires. This was much faster and more reliable than sending messages by horse messenger. the telephone was invented In 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. The first radio broadcasts were transmitted

Turgenev, Emile Zola, Lord Alfred Tennyson, and Gustave Flaubert. American-born and never married, James would live the majority of his life in Europe, becoming a British citizen in 1915 after the outbreak of World War I. Many of his works have inspired other author's works and adaptations to the stage and screen. Jack London Jack London, whose life symbolized the power of will, was the most successful writer in America in the early 20th Century. His vigorous stories of men and animals against the environment, and survival against hardships were drawn mainly from his own experience. An illegitimate child, London passed his childhood in poverty in the Oakland slums. At the age of 17, he ventured to sea on a sealing ship. The turning point of his life was a thirty-day imprisonment that was so degrading it made him decide to turn to education and pursue a career in writing

donate books to towns. The growth of a public library system in the United States started in the late 19th century and was much helped by donations from Andrew Carnegie. This reflected classes in a society: The poor or the middle class had to access most books through a public library or by other means while the rich could afford to have a private library built in their homes. The advent of paperback books in the 20th century led to an explosion of popular publishing. Paperback books made owning books affordable for many people. Paperback books often included works from genres that had previously been published mostly in pulp magazines. As a result of the low cost of such books and the spread of bookstores filled with them (in addition to the creation of a smaller market of extremely cheap used paperbacks) owning a private library ceased to be a status symbol for the rich.

peasants whose identity was largely influenced by regional loyalty. The name they often used while referring to themselves -- "country people" -- also seemed to be a sign of social self- determination. Climbing the social ladder in a society with a fixed class system was possible only for the very few. For an Estonian, this automatically meant Germanisation. Such a process of individuals revising their ethnic adherence, which had begun in the Middle Ages and continued until the early 20th century. Serfdom and the intensifying manorial economy The impact of the Swedish social order in Estonia continued under the Russian Empire. Although the Northern War meant a severe setback to the development of schools, the Swedish church and school systems remained practically unchanged. Most peasants learned to read at home, though the level of literacy in North Estonia was 40%, in South Estonia 55% and in Saaremaa Island 62%.

circumstances. New Zealand's National Anthems The words for "God Defend New Zealand" were written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish immigrant Thomas Bracken. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876. The winner of the competition was John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song became increasingly popular during the 19th century and early 20th century, and in 1940 the New Zealand government bought the copyright and made it New Zealand's national hymn. While being used as New Zealand's national anthem at the British Empire Games from 1950 onward, it was first officially used at the Olympic Games in 1972. Following the performance at the Munich games, a campaign began to have the song adopted as the national anthem. In 1976 a petition was presented to parliament asking for it to be made the national anthem,

Old Tallinn

Baltic shores. The round cannon tower, built in the 15th century, has a diameter of 17 meters. Its height is 38 meters and its walls are 4 meters thick. The tower was just high enough that its guards had a view into the kitchens of neighbouring buildings. The tower s name, "peek in the kitchen", comes from its height. The tower was partially destroyed during the Livonian War (1558-1583), but the building itself did not fall. The tower has been rebuilt several times, but up until the 20th century, it was still being used as a gunpowder storage and storehouse. Today the tower tells the story of the birth and development of Tallinn and the most important military events from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The external wall still holds stone and iron cannonballs from Russian tsar Ivan IV. The Great Coastal Gate, built along with the city wall, is situated on the northern side of the Old Town, near the harbour.

THE HISTORY OF JOURNALISM

Professional and ethical standards In the UK, all newspapers are bound by the Code of Practice of the Press Complaints Commission. This includes points like respecting people's privacy and ensuring accuracy. However, the Media Standards Trust has criticised the PCC, claiming it needs to be radically changed to secure public trust of newspapers. This is in stark contrast to the media climate prior to the 20th Century, where the media market was dominated by smaller newspapers and pamphleteers who usually had an overt and often radical agenda, with no presumption of balance or objectivity. Little note: Publishers, owners and other corporate executives, especially advertising sales executives, can try to use their powers over journalists to influence how news is reported and published. Journalists usually rely on top management to create and maintain a "firewall"

Donne wrote poetry exclusively for personal pleasure. His use, for example, of religious imagery in love poems and images of physical love in religious poetry shocked his contemporaries, and his work was not widely appreciated in the 18th and 19th c. His reputation grew at the beginning of the 20th c, when his passionate, dramatic poetry became popular again, and it is only since then that he has been widely recognised as one of the great poets of the English language. English Parliament and Elections

Commons met in a church and now the Parliament looks like one. When the MPs address each other they don't say the names directly but they address them as "my right honourable friend from Winchester" etc. This was created to take off the heat of a debate. An MP's life The informality of the Commons may result from the fact that in history the members were supposed to be ordinary people just representing people. This way the MPs were not even paid until the 20th century. This way only rich people were able to afford being a member of the Parliament. Even now they don't get paid very much one MP has to share an office and a secretary with two other MPs. Most MPs are full-time politicians. But the old tradition where the MPs have other jobs reflects from the working hours of today. The Parliament doesn't sit in the morning. Work time is "gentlemen's hours" and they start their work later. They have a lot of holidays too

New Zealand - lühireferaat

As more and more settlers arrived, conflicts over land led to several wars between the British and Maori in the North Island. The South Island remained rather peaceful until in 1863 gold was found there, and thousands of people hurried to New Zealand to look for gold. New Zealand became a separate colony in 1841. In 1907, New Zealand became an independent Dominion, and a fully independent nation in 1947. British culture dominated New Zealand life throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. However, since World War II, New Zealand has moved towards its own unique national identity and place in the world. New Zealand is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of New Zealand. In 1893, New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. New Zealand's economy has traditionally been based on exports from its very efficient agricultural system

Nurses also provide many services to patients independent of the doctors. Various kinds of therapists give special treatment as ordered by the doctor. Other skilled workers serve clinics, medical laboratories, X-ray departments and operating theatres. Diseases There are many different diseases in the world. Some have been stamped out, others have improved and come back. New diseases have also developed, such as AIDS, stress, diabetes etc. These diseases are called the diseases of the 20th century. Today many diseases are well known and can be cured. Such diseases are flu, pneumonia, measles and many others. Coughs and cold are common diseases in winter. They can easily be cured if you rest and make medicine properly. But if you don't cure them well, they might turn into a worse disease. Toompea Castle is also one of the most potent symbols of the reigning power. Today Toompea is the seat of the Government of Estonia as well as the Riigikogu, both of which are often simply colloquially referred to as Toompea. For centuries there was only one access to Toompea - Pikk Jalg - but there is also another way leading up to Toompea - Lühike Jalg, which was made in the 14th century. At present Pikk Jalg and Lühike Jalg are used only by pedestrians. Until the 20th century there was no way down from the western side of Toompea except for a foot-path. The stairs were built in 1903 and called Patkul Stairs after Dietrich Friedrich von Patkuli who had been the deputy Governor in Tallinn during the Great Northern War. Pikk Jalg (Long Leg) - the original road leading to the ancient Estonian stronghold (therefore the oldest street in Tallinn) and the only public road connecting the upper and lower town. Australia

The Australian Capital Territory was formed in 1911 to provide a location for the new federal capital of Canberra. Canberra an aboriginal word meaning "meeting place" is the newest city, and unlike other cities, it is a long way 120 kilometres from the sea. It was created just for the sake of having a capital city. It is small in area and population. Australia has an active tradition of music, ballet and theatre. The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous 20th century buildings, and one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world. Australian Aboriginal music, dance and art have a great influence on Australian visual and performing arts today. Over the past 50 years, Australian culture has been strongly influenced by American popular culture (particularly television and cinema), large-scale immigration from non-English-speaking countries, and Australia's Asian neighbours.

The code subordinated women to their fathers and husbands, who controlled all family property, determined the fate of children, and were favoured in divorce proceedings. Many of these provisions were only reformed in the second half of the 20th century. The second book deals with the law of things: the regulation of property rights--ownership, usufruct, and servitudes. The third book deals with the methods of acquiring rights: by succession, donation, marriage settlement, and obligations. In the last chapters, the code regulates a number of nominate contracts, legal and conventional mortgages, limitations of actions, and prescriptions of rights. 6.Comparative criminal law

world literature in all its branches, mainly in English. Poetry in Irish represents the oldest vernacular poetry in Europe with the earliest examples dating from the 6th century; Jonathan Swift, still often called the foremost satirist in the English language, was wildly popular in his day and remains so in modern times amongst both children and adults. Music and dance The Irish tradition of folk music and dance is also widely known. In the middle years of the 20th century, as Irish society was attempting to modernise, traditional music tended to fall out of favour, especially in urban areas. During the 1960s, and inspired by the American folk music movement, there was a revival of interest in the Irish tradition. Of note also is a growing genre of Irish music fused with heavy Heavy Metal called Celtic Metal / Celtic Battle Metal (also sometimes called Folk Metal). Inuit Culture

Today the parka style of coat is worn in other places in the world and it is made of many other materials. Traditions Although Inuit life has changed significantly over the past century, many traditions continue. Traditional storytelling, mythology, and dancing remain important parts of the culture. Family and community are very important. The Inuktitut language is still spoken in many areas of the Arctic and is common on radio and in television programming. Changes to Inuit Life during the 20th Century Inuit a century ago lived very differently than Inuit today. Before the 1940s, Inuit had minimal contact with Europeans. Europeans passed through on their way to hunt whales or trade furs but very few of them had any interest in settling down on the frozen land of the Arctic. So the Inuit had the place to themselves. They moved between summer and winter camps to always be living where there were animals to hunt. In winter camps they lived in snow shelters called igloos. In

USA topic

America's pop culture America's pop culture is the music, movies, television. It doesn't really reflect the true culture of American people. We all know The Simpsons, Mickey Mouse, Elvis Presley, Superman, Indiana Jones, Madonna and South Park because America has exported them to other countries. Nowadays ofcourse spreads American culture the Internet and TV. Pop culture is Heavily influenced by mass media (at least from the early 20th century on) and perpetuated by that culture's vernacular language, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of the society. America's pop culture is widely spread into Europe, but not very much into the East countries, because India has Bollywood and it is as huge as Hollywood. Of course America has stolen some ideas from other countries, like Japan, where there are very many TV shows and comedy shows. Pop culture is meant for the masses

Islam

The groom is required to pay a dowry (mahr) to the bride, as stipulated in the contract. A man may marry up to four wives if he believes he can treat them equally, while a woman may marry one man only. In most Muslim countries, the process of divorce in Islam is known as talaq, which the husband initiates by pronouncing the word "divorce". Scholars disagree whether Islamic holy texts justify traditional Islamic practices such as veiling and seclusion (purdah). Starting in the 20th century, Muslim social reformers argued against these and other practices such as polygamy, with varying success. At the same time, many Muslim women have attempted to reconcile tradition with modernity by combining an active life with outward modesty. Certain Islamist groups like the Taliban have sought to continue traditional law as applied to women. Calendar The formal beginning of the Muslim era was chosen to be the Hijra in 622 CE, which was an

inglise keeles Eesti tutvustus: Project: Estonia

At the same time, the way of life of the local people is characterised by strong families, marriage, children and respect and love for fellow men. The local cultural heritage offers as much variety as the nature. Many rare work and mythological motives are retained in folk songs. The flax-growing that spread rapidly in the beginning of the 19th century was the basis of the prosperous Mulgi family farms in Southern Viljandimaa. 19. The second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century constituted the golden age for many local families. The mulgi inhabitants were actually the first farmers in Estonia who bought the farms for their families after being released from the servitude. The farming was developed rapidly thanks to flax-growing. The wealthiest farmers gained even so much money that for the first time in history Estonian farmers became owners of mansions. The wealthy mulk were the first of Estonian farmers to build manses, until

The second translation I read is by Peter Bush, with an introduction by Juan Goytisolo. This translation was also written using the tragicomedia of 21 acts. Goytisolo, one of the most famous writers of the 20th century, writes in his introduction that this translation of La Tragicomedia "now gives readers in the English-speaking world access to an astonishingly modern work... in a form that reflects the spirit of the original" (Bush p VII). The translation 5 was first published in 2009 in Great Britain, a long time after the translation by Mabbe. However

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

5 Have the Russians walked on the Moon? Though the exploration of Mars has taken place over hundreds of years, it began in earnest with the invention and development of the telescope in the 1600s. Increasingly detailed views of the planet from the Earth inspired speculation about its environment and possible life, even intelligent civilizations that might be found there. Probes sent from Earth beginning in the late 20th century have dramatically increased the knowledge of the Martian system. Engineering interplanetary journeys is very complicated, so roughly two thirds of all spacecraft destined for Mars failed before completing their missions. But since 6 August 2012, there have been two scientific rovers on the surface of Mars beaming signals back to earth, and three orbiters currently surveying the planet. Mars is the only planet we know of that can currently feasibly support human life.

Canada topic

The native people Indians and Inuits (Eskimos) , proud and free have been retreated, live in the North West territories, in the remote and lonely areas, which except a few settlements, and a few mines, is as God made it. Here the Indian is a nomadic hunter still. Here the Eskimo, in a Stone Age of his own. The number of Indians and Eskimos are about 380, 000 and 25,000 accordingly. Thanks to their rapid birth rate their number has increased during the 20th and 21st century. Picturesque Quebec is the most French of Canada's big cities. It attracts many visitors. Canada's largest city, Montreal, is also largely French. Next to Paris it is the largest French- speaking city in the world. In the two cities many signs are in both French and English.

iteration, as in the compositions of La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and John Adams. (See also Postminimalism). The term "minimalist" is often applied colloquially to designate anything which is spare or stripped to its essentials. It has also been used to describe the plays and novels of Samuel Beckett, the films of Robert Bresson, the stories of Raymond Carver, and even the automobile designs of Colin Chapman. The word was first used in English in the early 20th century to describe the Mensheviks. Minimalist design The reconstruction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's German Pavilion in Barcelona The term minimalism is also used to describe a trend in design and architecture where in the subject is reduced to its necessary elements. Minimalist design has been highly influenced by Japanese traditional design and architecture. In addition, the work of De Stijl artists is a major source of reference for this kind of work

Marilyn Monroe

He encouraged her to apply to the The Blue Book modeling agency. She signed with the agency, and she began researching the work of famous actresses Jean Harlow and Lana Turner, and enrolled in drama and singing classes. Monroe had her hair cut, straightened, and lightened to golden blonde.[15] She became one of Blue Book's most successful models, appearing on dozens of magazine covers. In 1946, she came to the attention of talent scout Ben Lyon. He arranged a screen test for her with 20th Century Fox. She was offered a standard six-month contract with a starting salary of $125 per week. [16] Since Norma Jeane was not considered a commercial stage name, Lyon suggested she adopt Marilyn (after the famous actress Marilyn Miller). [17] For her last name, she took her mother's maiden name of Monroe. During her first six months at Fox, Monroe was given no work, but Fox renewed her contract and she was given minor appearances in Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! and Dangerous Years, both
