20th - Century Archaisms "Among the technological archaisms I've had to explain to the Tuned In children--what a 'record' is, why they call it 'dialing' a phone, the fact that, once, you couldn't rewind TV shows--is the fact that, a long time ago, musicians used to make little movies of their songs, and people would watch them on TV."

The Tower of London

loomed forebodingly over the huddled wooden buildings of medieval London, a visible expression of Norman power. The White Tower consisted of three storeys and contains the austere Norman Chapel of St. John, which remains one of the best preserved examples of a Norman chapel in England. The present castle, now covering eighteen acres evolved around the Conqueror's keep, being added to by successive generations. The Tower of London in The 20th Century During the First World War eleven German spies were shot by firing squad in the Tower of London. Only one bomb was dropped on the Tower during that war and fortunately it fell on the moat. During the Second World War the Tower of London was closed to the public and the crown jewels were removed to a safer location. During the war the Tower suffered bomb damage and two 19th century buildings were destroyed. Part of the Old Hospital Block was also destroyed.

The Noble Savage in the 20th Century Fiction

So when the main character learns, we learn, while he suffers, we suffer and when he has a happy ending, we are also happy. The teacher our icon meets is also the teacher for us. Despite the alien nature, the mentor is where the moral lies. The characteristics of the noble savage are projected to the mentor character because it creates a person who is able to teach us something new from the world he is from. Nevertheless, a mentor in the 20th century fiction does not have to be different in appearance, just alien to the modern world and its habitants. Even the slightest fraction of an idea commonly known to us raises interest and opens a door to a new understanding of things.

Philosophy today

Philosophy Today The Great Divide Most contemporary philosophers follow one of two approaches "Continental" philosophy "Analytic" philosophy Continental philosophy is more influential on the European continent Analytic philosophy is predominant in the major research universities in the English-speaking world Analytic Philosophy Analytic philosophy developed from attempts in the early 20th century to make our concepts precise. The model of this procedure was science. Emphasis in contemporary analytic philosophy is on language and meaning, and meaning is understood as a relation between language and objective reality. Thus, understanding the structure of language is what reveals the structure of reality. Continental Philosophy At the same time that analytic philosophy was emerging, E. Husserl was developing his

Essey: How does the United States influence Estonia

everyday life for almost every Estonian. Of course, it is not only the case of Estonia. Americanization is taking place all over the world. We could say, that we are just dealing with globalization, but since the most influence apparently comes from US and not equally from the rest of the world, I would say we rather deal with Americanization. Language is unquestionably an integral part of culture and through language people recognise their national identity. Until the 20th century, our mother tongue was most influenced by German language. During the first half of 20th century, Estonian language was closer to Finnish and the second half of 20th century was dominated by Russian influences. In the 21th century, however, Estonian language has been stoutly impacted by English. Some people are very protective and resolute about preserving Estonian language with its linguistic diversity just as it is without any foreign influences

Lived during the 15th century. He was a priest, theologian & translator. During that time, the Bible’s were only available in either Latin or Hebrew, which made it very difficult for common people to understand. He came out with a radical plan to translate the Bible into local languages (the first language was German – translated by Martin Luther). This inspired many other translators during that period. • What happened in the 19th and 20th century in translation studies? When and who created the term ‘translation studies’? Translation Studies – James S. Holmes - 1972 Ferdinand de Saussure – Lived during the 19th and 20th century. He was a Swiss linguist and a semiotician. Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas He was one of the most popular poets in the 20th century. Thomas grew up in Wales and left school at the age of 16. During his teen years he wrote numerous poems and had his first poem published in 1933. During his career Thomas also wrote short stories, essays, film scripts and one novel. His poems seem to be disorderly, overwhelming outpourings of language. In 1949 he began visiting the US for poetry reading tours, he became a celebrity there. His most famous play "Under Milk Wood"

Tallinn town hall

A lot of the medieval architecture of the Town Hall was destroyed or distorted in the course of that reconstruction. In 1667 the interior decor of the Council Chamber was modernised. Lunette paintings to themes of the Bible were ordered from painter Johann Aken and carved wooden friezes beneath them from Elert Thiele and Joachim Armbrust. In the 19th century both the windows of the Town Hall and its eastern façade were rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style. The structure stepped into the 20th century with big changes in its exterior and interior decoration, and smaller changes followed in the first half of the 20th century. The spire of the tower was consumed in flames in a Soviet air raid on 9 March 1944. This triggered the start of restoration work after the war.

Ireland

to world literature in all its branches, mainly in English. Poetry in Irish represents the oldest vernacular poetry in Europe with the earliest examples dating from the 6th century; Jonathan Swift, still often called the foremost satirist in the English language, was wildly popular in his day and remains so in modern times amongst both children and adults. The Irish tradition of folk music and dance is also widely known. In the middle years of the 20th century, as Irish society was attempting to modernise, traditional music tended to fall out of favour, especially in urban areas. During the 1960s, and inspired by the American folk music movement, there was a revival of interest in the Irish tradition. This revival was led by such groups as The Dubliners, The Chieftains, the Clancy Brothers, Sweeney's Men, and individuals like Seán Ó Riada and Christy Moore. Irish and Scottish traditional music share some similar characteristics

Book opinion To Kill A Mockingbird

Book opinion I read the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” written by Harper Lee, published in 1960. The books events take place in 1880’s Alabama. I really liked the book and I understand why it’s important for people- especially young people like high-schoolers to read this book. The book gives good insight on why we still have problems with racism around us and how much worse it was back in the 19th and 20th century. It has a good mixture of educational and historical topics and humour. Although many things are told the reader through metaphors, the meaning of the metaphor is often explained, as the book is told through a kid’s point of view. I would recommend this book to high schoolers, as it explains important topics that are still an issue to this day and it may be an eye- opening book to some people.

Jazz

Jazz Jazz is a type of lively music with strong, complex rhythms. It's earlier expression is said to be ragtime. Jazz was first played at the beginning of the 20th century by black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jazz began with a basic trio of musicians: a cornet, a trumpet or a violin and a trombone. Below this there was a guitar or a banjo, sometimes a piano and drums. Jazz musicians often accent or add notes or beats in unusual or unexpected places. Also they add other elements of black music such as blues and ragtime to make a unique American music form. Musicians make up tunes as they play.
