Biggest shopchains in London Polina Tsvetkova Harrods Harrods is an upmarket department store located in Brompton Road in Knightsbridge. Harrods founder Charles Henry Harrod started his business in 1824, aged 25. Harrod's son Charles Digby Harrod built the business into a thriving retail operation selling medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruit and vegetables and employed 100 peope by 1880. In 1883 the store burnt to the ground but in short order, a new building was built on the same site. In 16 November 1898 Harrods debuted England´s first escalator.
