The school’s headmaster is Mr. Brocklehurst, a cruel, hypocritical, and abusive man. Brocklehurst preaches a doctrine of poverty and privation to his students while using the school’s funds to provide a wealthy and opulent lifestyle for his own family. At Lowood, Jane befriends a young girl named Helen Burns, whose strong, martyrlike attitude toward the school’s miseries is both helpful and displeasing to Jane. A massive typhus epidemic sweeps Lowood, and Helen dies of consumption. The epidemic also results in the departure of Mr. Brocklehurst by attracting attention to the insalubrious conditions at Lowood. After a group of more sympathetic gentlemen takes Brocklehurst’s place, Jane’s life improves dramatically. She spends eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. After teaching for two years, Jane yearns for new experiences. She accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield, where she teaches a lively French girl named Adèle

When she waked up, Mrs. Reed decided to send Jane to the Lowood School, Jane was also happy to leave. When Jane arrived to the school she found out that her life was better in her aunt house than in that school. The school’s headmaster was Mr. Brocklehurst, a cruel, hypocritical, and abusive man, who treated the students really bad. In school Jane found a friend named Helen Burns who was also at same age as Jane. In the winter Helen got sic and died. The epidemic also resulted in the departure of Mr. Brocklehurst by attracting attention to the insalubrious conditions at Lowood. Jane spent eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. After teaching for two years, Jane accepted to be a governess at a manor called Thornfield, where she thought a French girl named Adele. Tom Phillips, the chicken farmer, said that he was driving slowly and carefully as always, but suddenly the truck started to make strange noise and he could not control it any more. Then he crashed. As a result the crates, where the chickens were held, went to pieces and chickens broke free. At the moment there is a real chaos in the middle on Mellowtown, chickens everywhere and pieces of the crates also. And what's worst, as there is worldwide bird flu epidemic, people are frightened maybe some of the chickens are diseased and that they could catch the infection. All the citizens look shocked. I asked local police officer Arthur Brown to comment what had happened. He said it is early to answer. He is still investigating, but he added that it seems that the farmer had been careless, because the load wasn't secured properly. Officer Brown said that the main priority at the moment is to clean up the mess and to catch all the

3) Discuss the meaning and origin of the following words and phrases: Among other sources use the evidence of the Corpus of Historical American English (http://corpus.byu.edu/coha/) department store – The term was first brought to use in the 19th century. In 1877, George and Edward Butler founded a small wholesale mail-order company in Boston, which later became known as the Butler Bros. Their innovation of the “Five Cent Counter” started the epidemic of department stores all over the country. From the French department, which meant “group of people” and “departure”, English has borrowed the sense of “separate division”. Meanwhile, store originally meant “supplies or provisions for a household, camp, etc” and was related to warfare. The word as “a place where goods are kept for sale” was first recorded in 1721 in American English.

The British In 1770, the Australian Aboriginals culture and way of life dramatically changed when Lieutenant James Cook took possession of the east coast of Australia and named it New South Wales. 9 The British colonisation of Australia began 18 years later, which was a catastrophic event for indigenous Australians. The Europeans spread epidemic diseases such as chickenpox, smallpox, influenza and measles. The British settlement then appropriated land and water resources from the Australian Aborigine, and were ignorant in their assumption that the semi-nomadic Aborigines could be driven off and made to live somewhere else. In fact, the loss of 'traditional lands,' food sources and water resources was a fatal blow to the Aboriginal communities, who already weakened by disease,

enduring as political communities. The European colonization of the Americas nearly destroyed the populations and cultures of the Native Americans. During the fifteenth through nineteenth centuries, their populations were ravaged by conflicts with European explorers and colonists, disease, displacement, enslavement as well as internal warfare. Scholars now believe that, among the various contributing factors, epidemic disease was the overwhelming cause of the population decline of the American natives. In the sixteenth century, Spaniards and other Europeans brought horses to the Americas. Some of these animals escaped and began to breed and increase their numbers in the wild. Ironically, the horse had originally evolved in the Americas, but the early American horse became game for the earliest humans and became extinct about 7,000 BC, just after the end of the last ice age

follorw up suggesting that in some areas witchcraft represented a female-led peasant rebellion. The history of the witches was recorded by the elite, so that today we know the witch only through the eyes of her persecutor. Two of the most common theories of the witch hunts are basically medical interpretations, attributing the the witch witch craze to unexplainable outbreaks of mass hysteria. One version has it that the peasantry went mad. According to this, the witch-craze was an epidemic of mass hatred and panic cast in image of a blood-lusty peasant mob bearing flaming torches. Another psychiatric interpretation holds that witches themselves were isane. One authoritative psychiatric historian, Gregory Zilboorg, wrote that: ...millions of of witches, sorcereres, possessed and obsessed were an enormous mass of severe neurotics [and] psychotics ... for many years the world looked like a veritable isane asylum..

This is, of course, exactly what the Buddha already discovered 2,600 years ago as a characteristic of the human condition. A person in the grip of ego, however, does not recognize suffering as suffering, but will look upon it as the only appropriate response in any given situation. The ego in is blindness is incapable of seeing the suffering it inflicts on itself and on others. Unhappiness is an ego-created mental- emotional disease that has reached epidemic proportions. It is the inner equivalent of the environmental pollution of our planet. Negative states, such as anger, anxiety, hatred, resentment, discontent, envy, jealousy, and so on, are not recognized as negative but as totally justified and are further misperceived not as self-created but as caused by someone else or some external factor. “I am holding you responsible for my pain.” This is what by implication the ego is saying.
