The author of the book, Philip Prowse, was born on the 9th of June , 1947 in Cornwall, south- west England . Philip studied English literature at Cambridge in 1965 to 1968. After he received his degree from Cambridge, Philip started working for the British Council. British Council is a British Government organization. Their purpose is to teach English language and about British culture. Philip worked in Birmingham, but in 1969 government sent him to Egypt where he was an adviser for training teachers. He also worked in Portugal , but after 2 years working there he moved back to England with his wife , where their daughter was born. He travelled all over the Europe and his family returned to England. Philip had begun writing. In 1972 John Milne asked Philip to write something to a Heinemann series. The book was success and it’s still in print .
The main characters in book are Peter Jones who is a lorry driver and John Stevens whose mother and father are dead and he is living with his uncle .
Peter was fifteen when his father died and he had to get a job to make a living. When he was seventeen, Peter started to work for a company called Universal Transport Limited. This company had a lot of lorries. At the beginning he couldn’t drive a lorry because he was too young but when he was old enough he started to drive with lorry.
Peter went to work and got biscuits to deliver to Manchester . When he started driving, he saw a hitch -hiker. He picked him up because it was raining. Peter asked where the boy wanted to go and the boy told him that he ran away from home. Peter wanted to know much more and they went to a café to drink a cup of tea and talk . In the café, Peter saw a newspaper where there was a boy’s description and he was wanted. The article said about his uncle death and John was a suspect. Peter asked John if he killed his uncle but John said he did not kill his uncle. Peter believed him and told him that he will find out who killed his uncle. Peter has a criminal past and he knows some guy who may help them . That guy called Jeff Beck gave them one contact who should know more than police in Bristol. That guy was called Bob and he sells information to the police. He gave John up and he was busted . Peter started to solve that problem and he promised to find the real murderer. He went back to the Bob and asked more information. He got it and started to chase one boy who drove away with a motorcycle. He started to chase him and police saw that and started to chase Peter. Finally Peter caught Tommy . The police arrested both but in the police station Tommy told everything about the murder and told the police that he killed John’s uncle accidently. They Released Peter and John. They went back to the lorry and Peter told John to start working with him in the same company. John agreed.
