NEUROBIOLOGY AUXILLARY GLOSSARY ACETYLCHOLINE – A neurotransmitter in both the brain and peripheral nervous system* (PNS). In the brain it helps regulate memory, whilst it controls the actions of skeletal and smooth muscle within the PNS. ACTION POTENTIAL – An electrical phenomenon which occurs when a neurone is activated and temporarily reverses the electrical state of its interior membrane from negative to positive. An electrical charge travels along the axon to the neurone’s ending (terminal) where it triggers the release of a neurotransmitter* and then disappears. ADRENALINE (U.S

can sell them, and people are allowed to buy them. But it's not legal, or safe, for people to use these medicines any way they want. Cigarettes and Alcohol Cigarettes and alcohol are two other kinds of legal drugs. (In Estonia, adults 18 can buy cigarettes and alcohol.) But smoking and excessive drinking are not healthy for adults and off limits for kids. Nicotine is the drug in tobacco leaves. Whether someone smokes, chews, or sniffs tobacco, he or she is delivering nicotine to the brain. Each cigarette contains about 10 milligrams of nicotine. Nicotine is what keeps people smoking despite its harmful effects. Because the smoker inhales only some of the smoke from a cigarette and not all of each puff is absorbed in the lungs, a smoker gets about 1 to 2 milligrams of the drug from each cigarette. A drop of pure nicotine would kill a person-in fact, nicotine can be used as a pesticide on crops. You might hear cigarettes referred to as smokes, cigs, or butts

Addiction and drugs

Smoking is a very addictive and risky hobby. So why do people start doing it in the first place? Firstly sometimes people try their first cigarette, they like it and so they start doing it more regularly. Secondly some people start smoking because there's a rumour saying that it's slimming. And another reason may be that it may relieve stress. After three or four cigarettes you get addicted to it because of nicotine. It is a drug that stimulates the brain. When the level of nicotine falls in your blood and you're a regular smoker, you usually develop withdrawal symptoms, such as craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger, difficulty with concentration, or just feeling awful. These symptoms are relieved by the next cigarette. Most smokers need to smoke regularly to feel normal and to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms. So once you start smoking it is very hard to quit. But why is smoking so harmful?

The Internet - a blessing or a curse?

It takes valuable hours from your working day without you even noticing. Because the Internet is limitless, it has no boundaries, much like the universe, people always discover new things, new websites, new information and that curiosity is what keeps them constantly online. Not only does the Internet reduce our face to face communication, it also has a dramatic effect on our intelligence. It has been scientifically proven that while surfing the Web, certain parts of the brain deteriorate, reducing the capabilities of one"s brain. It demands less brain activity than reading a book for example The Internet, at the same time, is both a blessing and a curse. When using it for the right things and for the right amount of time, it can benefit you, but you also have to see and feel the limit of it: when you surpass its usefulness and start browsing it just for fun.

Sheep senses and social cognition Sheep generally are held in low regard as far as cognition and social skills are concerned. However there is now interesting evidence from studies of their behaviour and brain function that they have highly sophisticated social and emotional recognition skills using faces, voices and smell. They are able to recognize and remember many diferent sheep and humans for several years or more and appear to have some capacity for forming mental images of the faces of absent individuals. The precence of such social cognition abilities in this species means that we must pay careful attention to welfare factors such as the composition and

Caffeine

14 A normal dose of caffeine is generally considered to be 100 mg, which is roughly the amount 15 found in a cup of coffee. However, more than half of all American adults consume more than 300 16 mg of caffeine every day, which makes it America's most popular drug. Caffeine is generally 17 consumed in coffee, cola, chocolate, and tea, although it is also available over-the-counter as a 18 stimulant. 19 Caffeine is believed to work by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain and other organs. This 20 reduces the ability of adenosine to bind to the receptors, which would slow down cellular 21 activity. The stimulated nerve cells release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline), which 22 increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood flow to muscles, decreases blood flow to the skin 23 and organs, and causes the liver to release glucose. Caffeine also increases levels of the 24 neurotransmitter dopamine.

If we want to suceed then we have no choice to do homework. But sometimes we get too much of it. We don't have the strenght or skills to do them. What does it cause? It causes us a lot of stress and anxiety. It effects us in many ways. For example students might be unable to sleep. Studying and thinking about a lot of things makes our brain to wake up and when we suddenly go to bed to have some sleep, then our brain don't let us to. Also students have more difficulty concentrating on their studies. Their thoughts might jump around places that they shouldn't be jumping in, during the study.

It is clearly that mobile phones have become an irreplaceable part of our lives. We use it to communicate with others, arrange our business or just for entertainment. As the mobile phones have simplyfied our lives in various ways, it also brings many disadvantages. To begin with, many researches have shown that mobile phone radiation may be harmful to human health. Also if parents trust their children to use mobile phones at very young age, the may get surprised when they finally see the bill. Because there are many addictive things like

Having a job while studying

Having a job while studying I think, that having a job while studying has both, positive and negative sides. One point of view in favour is preparation for the further life. On the other hand, having a job while studying shortens your spare time, time to relax and rest your brain, also you do not have time to do your homework properly, grades will suffer. Furthermore, young people should have enough time to spend with their friends and family, while students who work, use their ,,free time" to earn money, they enter to the grown-up world too soon, not to mention the fact that these working students usually do not have enough time for their personal life, relationships with opposite gender will suffer. They lose piece of their childhood.

be really empty. For example, a lot of students do not like maths or reading. Math develops logic and then we could imagine how many people would be without logical thinking. And reading books enriches vocabulary, so if people do not read books at all, their vocabulary would be quite small. On the other hand, learning different things like history and bilogy expand people's knowledge greatly. With learning so many different things one's brain and memory develops and that makes a person intelligent. In my opinion, students have to learn different subjects, even those that they find boring and let themselves be after graduating highly educated and smart participant of society.

Healthy life

Healthy life A Healthy lifestyle is one which helps to keep and improve people`s health and will being. If you want to live healthy life, then eat healthy food. In my opinion begins all still eating because food is our body`s fuel. If the fuel is of good quality, remains in the body mostly "working" or healthy. Drink enough water, walking in the fresh air every day. Get enough sleep, a good night`s sleep gives your brain a brilliant boost, it improves your memory and ability to focus. At least 7-8 hours of sleep is very important for me and I always trying to go to sleep before midnight. Of course it easy for me, because I go to school and I don`t have kids, but I believe, however, that most people really could more sleep, when they plan their day better organized. Have a laugh, think positively and set goals. Listen to classical music and try something new. Don`t drink alcohol or smoke.

of the human auditory spectrum. In addition, dogs have ear mobility, which allows them to rapidly pinpoint the exact location of a sound. Eighteen or more muscles can tilt, rotate, raise, or lower a dog's ear. A dog can identify a sound's location much faster than a human can, as well as hear sounds at four times the distance. Smell The olfactory bulb in dogs is roughly forty times bigger than the olfactory bulb in humans, relative to total brain size, with 125 to 220 million smell-sensitive receptors. The wet nose is essential for determining the direction of the air current containing the smell. General visibility A countershaded animal will have dark coloring on its upper surfaces and light coloring below, which reduces its general visibility. Many breeds will have an occasional "blaze", stripe, or "star" of white fur on their chest or underside. More pictures Thank you for listening!

million years ago. Fossil evidence points to the ways which we have gradually changed. We left the trees, started walking and began to live in larger groups. And then our brains got bigger. Physically we are another primate, but our bigger brains are unusual. We don't know exactly what led to our brains becoming the size they are today, but we seem to owe our complex reasoning abilities to it. It is likely that we have our big brain to thank that we exist at all. When we Homo sapiens first appeared about 200,000 years ago we weren't alone. We shared the planet at least four other upright cousins; Neanderthals, Denisovans, the "hobbit" Homo floresiensis and a mysterious fourth group. Furthermore we do not value education and intellectuality much anymore, instead we value more superficial things such as entertainment. Reading is not only amusing and entertaining but it also broadens the ming and keeps the brain functioning. It is a tremendous shame that people read less books time by time.
