Washington D.C. is the capital of the US. It is a city that has no state.
George Washington became the first president of the US in 1790. Washington picked a place for the capital near his home, Mount Vernon. The state of Maryland gave some land and Virginia gave some land.This made the the District of Columbia . The name of the capital is after George Washington.
Washington , D.C. has many beautiful buildings, wide streets and parks .Washington, D.C. is very special in the spring .It is cherry blossom time, these cherry trees were sent by Japan to the US in 1912. The trees have beautiful flowers in March or April. It is pretty time to see Washington, D.C.
The most famous building is the White House.It is the place where the President lives and works . The White House includes the private living quarters for the president and his family together with the President’s office and other rooms .The total numbers of rooms is now 132. Some rooms are open to the public on certain days .The original building was begun in 1792 and the offical title of that building was authorized in 1901 by President Theodore Roosevelt .Much of the interior is now furnished as it would have been in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.
The US Capitol is the most important and architecturally impressive buildings in the country . The building of the Capitol was started in 1793. The Capitol that we see today . The Capitol is the building where the US Congress works, members of Congress pass laws for the country. The Capitol is located on Capitol Hill.Congress has two parts. One is the Senate and the other is the House of Representatives. There is a statue on top of the Capitol. It is the goddess of Freedom.When Congress meets, the statue has a light .Today, the Capitol has 540 rooms. Visitors can see many of these rooms. They can also see hundreds of paintings and works of art in the Capitol.
In Washington, D.C. are many monuments that are dedicated to the presidents of the US, like The Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial , The Franklin D.Roosevelt Memorial and The Jefferson Memorial.These are very beautiful and very important monuments for the people who lives in the US.

Most of the people live in towns. There are 50 states in America. The biggest of the state is Texas, next by size are California, Alaska and Montana. Six states - Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut ,Rhode Island and Massachusetts are called New England. They are all small states in the U.S. that lie in the north-east. The first colony of immigrants settled down in Virginia, in the eastern part of the U.S.A. The biggest cities are New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, etc. The flag of America was adopted on 14 th June 1777. It is called the "Stars and Stripes". It is said that Betsy Ross sewed the first flag. It features 13 horizontal red and white stripes (for the first colonies which formed the U.S.A.) and 50 stars on the blue background. Red means courage, blue justice and white innocence. There is a star for every state of the USA.
