People like to travel during their summer holidays. Some people go abroad to see new countries, some people prefer to go to the country- side to enjoy country-life far from noise and fuss of big cities. Other people like staying at home doing nothing, but watching TV and playing computer games. Some people like to spend their holidays in cities, visiting theatres, museums and going sightseeing. But a great number of people go to the seaside. As for me, I prefer to go on holiday to the seaside. I do not like crowds. My family and I always have our holiday on the coast. Sea and sunbathes, that is what we look forward to every summer. Hotels at the large seaside towns are rather expensive, so we usually go camping. Last year we spent our holidays in a camp. Each day was full of small joys. We swam in the sea, lay in the sun, played different games and had a wonderful time. We lived there for about a month. The time passed very quickly. It was a wonderful holiday

Anthropology and Tourism

activities as tourism does not take place in a vacuum. Nash (1996) highlights, that anthropology of tourism includes in itself linkages or shortcomings between social life and culture. Taylor (1871) defines culture as a whole complex, which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, 1 Anthropology of Tourism Madli Tuvike morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. Nash (1996) summarized that culture is a system of activities for a group. It can be argued that, for adventure tourists, the adventurous activities are the culture and lifestyle itself. This can be illustrated on examples of some adventure tourism activities, such as snowboarding, surfing or climbing. People who practice these will dress similar, associate with people who are

Backpaking lifestyle

With a decline in identities based on logics of production and tradition, Shields (1992) suggests selves are instead increasingly fashioned and differentiated through aesthetic consumption practices. Distinctive consumption becomes a life project wherein ‘the particularity of the assemblage of goods, clothes, practices, experiences, appearance and bodily dispositions’ are designed together into a lifestyle (Featherstone, 1987, p. 59). Lifestyle practices such as habits of dressing, what to eat, how to spend leisure time and even ‘favoured milieux’ become ‘decisions not only about how to act but who to be’ (Giddens, 1991, p. 81). As increased consumer choice may afford a dizzying array of life options (Gergen, 1991), the stylising of a distinctive mode of living also promises the opportunity to anchor one’s self amidst the cacophony of liquid modernity (Bauman, 2000). Featherstone (1987) does

Travelling

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities. They travel to enjoy picturesque places, to try different food People can travel on foot, by train, by plane, by sea, by ship and by car. All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. Of course, travelling by air is the fastest and the most convenient way, but it is the most expensive too. Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see much more interesting places of the country you are travelling through. Modern trains have very comfortable seats. There are also sleeping cars and dining cars which make even the longest journey enjoyable. Speed, comfort and safety are the main advantages of trains and planes. That is why I prefer travelling by train. Travelling by sea is popular mostly for pleasure trips. On board large ships and small river boats people can visit foreign countries and different pla
