Film review
„The fifth element“ is a science fiction film which is directed by Luc Besson. It’s premiere in UK was on 6th June 1997 and in Estonia 9th January 1998. It’s screenplay is also by Luc Besson. Main characters were played by really famous actors like Bruce Willis (Korben Dallas), Milla Jovovich (Leeloo), Gary Oldman (Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg) and many more.
The story begins in Egypt in 1914 where an archaeologist  is about to discover the mystery behind the ‘Fifth Element’, a supreme being that comes to Earth every 5,000 years and, combined with the plain old four elements, defeats whatever evil is threatening the planet . The next thing happens in future, on 23rd century where the Fifth Element gets created once more in the ‘ perfect ’ form of Leeloo. The first half of the film is mostly about Korben Dallas- a former military man who now is a taxi driver and looks for the perfect woman . When Leeloo escapes from lab she falls basically to the back seat of Korbens taxi. And then begins the whole point of this story. It’s a competition between the good side, the bad side (a group of aliens) and then this one guy (Zorg) who appears to be on the bad side, but wants to get benefit to himself. Everyone wants to get the 4 rocks which decide the whole destiny of life. The movie was brightened up with a lot of humorous scenes and characters. There was this usual Bruce Willis type of humour, also this young Leeloo who firstly didn’t know anything and acted like a baby and also there was this really annoying character - DJ Ruby Rhod. It was quite unusual to combine real serious plot (destroying life) to comedy so it wasn’t an usual science fiction. Compare to ohter this type of films this was actually quite enjoyable even though the plot was really predictable. The thing what was really ridiculous was these silly costumes . Usually the aliens should look scary , but in this film you just can’t stop laughing at them and this blue singing diva? Theres no way you can take her seriously. The only scary thing was maybe the voice of the ultimate evil character. But besides funny moments there is also some action going .
To sum up I would say that it’s that kind of film where you don’t have to follow the plot too much. It’s not a scary or very serious movie, rather amusing after a long day. Also it’s nice to have this DVD in your collection because it’s just that type of film to whatch with your friends when you’ve got nothing else to do.
