The story begins as old Jacob Jankowski goes back to his memories and tells the tales of his youth .

The story on three sentences .
Jankowski's life takes a full 180, when his parents die in a car accident . He turns his back on his former life and jumps on the first passing train ,which belongs to the Benzini Brothers' Most Spectacular Show on Earth circus . His life after that is full of success , but also tragedy, which is caused by a forbidden love against his bosses wife.

What is the conflict in the story?
The main conflict was in the relationship between Jankowski and the circus director August. The stance was critical even in the beginning of their meeting and August constantly humiliated Jankowski. Things did get better between them after Jankowski schooled the circuses new star-Rosie the elephant , for which August was grateful . The good relations only lasted until August noticed the feelings between Jankowski and August's wife Marlena. August even tried to kill Jankowski several times, but always failed.

What is the style like?
The book was narrated by the main character, Jacob Jankowski. When he is older, the narration is mostly his thoughts and emotions at the time, with some dialogue. When he is younger, there is more action and less descriptions. The sentences was quite long.

Who is main character? What is he like? How does he change during the story?
The main character is Jacob Jankowski. He is an emotional and extremely kind-hearted person , who loves animals and can't see them suffer. In the beginning he is modest and quite shy, but as the story progresses, he becomes bolder and mentally stronger.

What did you enjoy about the book?
I loved how the book was a mix of varied emotions- joy, sorrow,suffering, which made the book less tedious. The other thing that made the book enjoyable was the need to know what would happen next, which was really compelling.

What didn’t you enjoy about the book?
Since the book was in a foreign language, it was sometimes hard to understand some words and that tired me. A somewhat negative thing was not being able to tune myself out of the story.
