Georgia was a magnet for New Englanders seeking their fortunes. He invented the cotton gin, which was the beginning of his success. After he failed in his cotton gin business, Whitney worked with interchangeable parts. Whitney is most famous for two innovations which later divided the United States in the mid- 19th century: the cotton gin (1793), and his advocacy of interchangeable parts. In the South, the cotton gin revolutionized the way cotton was harvested and reinvigorated slavery. While in the North, the adoption of interchangeable parts revolutionized the manufacturing industry, and in time contributed greatly to their victory in the Civil War.[3] He died on January 8 , 1825 at the age of 59 The cotton gin is a mechanical device which removes the seeds from cotton, and it had been extremely labor-intensive. The cotton gin was a wooden drum stuck with hooks, which pulled the cotton fibers through a mesh. The cotton seeds would not fit through the mesh and fell

By 1848, after buying Florida from Spanish and winning Texas and the west from Mexico, America reached all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, over 5000 kilometers. THE CIVIL WAR Expansion brought many problems, the most important was the problem of slavery. The Republican Party was made to gain support against slavery. After Abraham Lincoln, the republican candidate, was elected for President in 1860 the northern part of america was slave free and it south there was still slavery. In 1861 the war broke out between south and west, and in the question of slavery. In 1865 south had to surrender and the north had won. Then slavery was abolished all over America. This incident was kept under wraps possibly because Covey was afraid the news of Frederick's victory would ruin his reputation as a "slave breaker" or he was simply ashamed of his defeat. In 1837, Douglass met Anna Murray, a free African-American, in Baltimore while he was still held in slavery. They were married soon after he obtained his freedom; Douglass escaped slavery on September 3, 1838, boarding a train to Havre de Grace, Maryland dressed in a sailor's uniform and carrying identification papers provided by a free black seaman. After crossing the Susquehanna River by ferry at Havre de Grace, Douglass continued by train to Wilmington, Delaware. It recognized the United States as a separate country in 1783. When Independence was declared in 1776, the 13 colonies became 13 States. In each State, the elected Assembly became the basis for a democratic government. Throughout the 1800s, new States kept joining the Union. And America kept gaining new territories. Soon it stretched all the way to the Pacific Ocean. While America expanded to the west, the Northern and Southern States argued over whether slavery should be allowed in the new western States. In 1860, Abraham Lincon was elected President. He was against slavery and promised to stop it from spreading any further. 11 Southern States decided to break away from the Union. The Federal Government did not allow this and a bloody Civil War began. In 1865, the North won the war. The Constitution was amended to abolish slavery and solidify the Union. When World War I began in 1914, America tried to stay out of the fighting, but it did

Reasons why people work

Reasons why people work In today's society it is known that people work because they need money to live. As Leonardo da Vinci said " God sells us all things at the price of labour " and unfortunately it tends to be true. However, there are still some of the other reason why people work. As Mothet Teresa said " Work without love is slavery" and fortunately there are many people in world who work because they love what they do. For example artists, musicians and actors do not earn a lot of money, however they can give the world something we need- entertainment. In addition to musicians, actors, and artists there are many other sincere, thoughtful and open-minded people who find time in addition to their daily work to help those who need help giving food to homeless people, helping children who are left without parents and

was adopted by the Confederation Congress on July 13, 1787. Also known as the the Ordinance of 1787, the Northwest Ordinance established a government for the Northwest Territory, outlined the process for admitting a new state to the Union, and guaranteed that newly created states would be equal to the original thirteen states. Considered one of the most important legislative acts of the Confederation Congress, the Northwest Ordinance also protected civil liberties and outlawed slavery in the new territories. The following three principal provisions were ordained in the document: (1) a division of the Northwest Territory into "not less than three nor more than five States"; (2) a three-stage method for admitting a new state to the Union—with a congressionally appointed governor, secretary, and three judges to rule in the first phase; an elected assembly and one nonvoting delegate to Congress to be elected in the second

ideals became the vision for modernday America, where these ideologies are deeply rooted in the nation. The Enlightenment was important America because it provided the philosophical basis of the American Revolution. The Revolution was more than just a protest against English authority; as it turned out, the American Revolution provided a blueprint for the organization of a democratic society. And while imperfectly done, for it did not address the terrible problem of slavery, the American Revolution was an enlightened concept of government whose most profound documents may have been the American Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution. To feel the full impact of the Enlightenment on America one needs only to look at the first inaugural address of Thomas Jefferson, who, along with Benjamin Franklin, is considered to be the American most touched by the ideas of the Enlightenment.

The politically correct view is that Columbus did not discover America, because people had lived here for thousands of years. Worse yet, it's claimed, the main legacy of Columbus is death and destruction. Columbus is routinely vilified as a symbol of slavery and genocide. Native Americans had built great civilizations with many millions of people long before Columbus wandered lost into the Caribbean. Columbus' voyage has even less meaning for North Americans than for South Americans because Columbus never set foot on our continent, nor did he open it to European trade. Scandinavian Vikings already had settlements here in the eleventh century, and British fisherman probably fished the shores of Canada for decades before Columbus

Political parties in the US

Today, the United States has two major political parties. One is the Democratic party, which evolved out of Thomas Jefferson's party. The other is the Republican party, which was formed by people in the states of the North and West, such as Abraham Lincoln, who wanted the government to prevent the expansion of slavery into new states then being admitted to the union. Most Americans today consider the Democratic party the more liberal party. Democrats believe the federal government and the state governments should be active in providing social and economic programs for those who need them, such as the poor, the unemployed or students who need money to go to college. Republicans are not necessarily opposed to such programs. They believe, however, that many social programs are too costly to the taxpayers

Mostly people are discriminating people who aren't the same skin color as they are, but there are many more discriminations. Racism is belief, that people, who aren't the same skin color, who don't look like you or whose life standards aren't like yours, then you are better and more intelligent than them. White people mostly discriminate black people. They call them dumb and violent. Biggest issue with racism is in USA. Many centuries ago black people were white people's slaves, but when the slavery became unacceptable, white people and black people had to live together in America and have mixed. Nowadays many americans still believe, that black people aren't as intelligent as they are and call them violent and dumb. Some even are, but that doesn't mean that all white people in America are good intelligent. In my opinion white people aren't more intelligent than black people. Mostly black people live in poor South countries, wich can't give a good education to their people

Priorities of Estonian History

This rewriting of history occurred again during the Soviet period, when de facto control of Estonia was in Russia's hands. When Estonia became an independent nation in 1918 (1920 from the perspective of some people, such as Russians), and again in 1990 (1993 from the perspective of some people, such as Russians), Estonians had the opportunity to tell the story from their own perspective. Words such as "pärisorjus" (lit. true slavery) have entered Estonian historiography to describe the subjected state in which Estonians existed prior to the Revolution. Germans and Russians (at least in particular time periods) on the other hand would have chosen terms such as "serfdom," "a fair economic system which benefits the strong and yet provides means of living for those are not as capable." Perhaps serfdom truly was slavery, but what is the difference between the terms "serfdom" and "pärisorjus"? How should we

Racism has been the problem in USA for many centurys. It is a kind of discrimination where people, who are black or another race, have not been treated according to normal human rights- they were not allowed to go normal schools and be part of the community. That made them develope their own society and became hostal to white people. After the black people came out of slavery the other problems started, they were pushed away from the everyday society, they had to work harder to get jobs, education but in the other hand there was people who helped them and tried to solve those issused to make a better community. But it still has not made any big changes, there are people who even now are discriminative to black people. History of the USA.

The Americans were led by George Washington who in 1788 became the country's first president. On the 4th of July, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was written and that day is now celebrated as the Day of Independence. The war ended in 1788 and during the time following it, the Americans bought large pieces of land from foreign countries to themselves, creating a big country. By 1860 America was a big country but there was a big difference between the free North and the slavery South. The biggest problem was the issue of slaves and due to that the Civil War broke out in 1861. President Abraham Lincoln tried hard to unite the country again. Though both sides were strong, the North had more men, more factories and stronger leaders. In 1865 the South accepted the loss. Lincoln was shot in 1865 and the next president wasn't strong enough to unite the country, so problems weren't solved.

During the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) Napoleon blocked sea "roads" to prevent the importation of sugar ships. As a result, the sugar cane began to look for replacements. Found that sugar beet can be separated. Beet-sugar was very low at that time, however, and sugar prices rose. After the Napoleonic wars the French abandoned the stock trades under the control of sugar cane, and became available again. Beet-sugar production died. The situation changed again, however, if the 19th mid-century, slavery was abolished, cheap labor has disappeared, and the price of sugar rose again. By that time, was bred to sugar beet and sugar cane had reached the same level. Was about to begin an entirely new chapter in the history of the sugar. However, from more than half the world cane sugar production continues today.

The American Civil War (18611865) was a civil war between the United States of America (the "Union") and the Southern slave states of the newly formed Confederate States of America under Jefferson Davis. The Union included all of the free states and the five slaveholding border states and was led by Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party. Republicans opposed the expansion of slavery into territories owned by the United States, and their victory in the presidential election of 1860 resulted in seven Southern states declaring their secession from the Union even before Lincoln took office. The Union rejected secession, regarding it as rebellion. The war began in 1861 with the bombing at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. After 4 years of war, the South finally surrendered and the Confederate States of America was destroyed. Political system The U.S

I feel totally librated. I feel free. I feel I am in charge. I am in control. From here on, whatever happens is because I allowed it to happen. I have made what I believe is my own major contribution to the debate on the state of the Black Race. Whether you agree with me or not is immaterial. The only important point is that we must stop the blame game and accept responsibility for the present state of the Black Race. Truth shall set you free, it has set me free. RAPE OF A RACE Let’s take slavery for instance. We attribute everything that has happened to the Black race to slavery. We delude ourselves about African Kingdoms which had thrived before the onslaught of first the Arabs, and later the Caucasians. We talk about the Pyramids of Egypt, the great empire of Mali and the learning capital of Timbuktu. Yes, I am constrained to agree that these were great legacies that our ancestors left

criminals people living in the West. In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), he paints a realistic picture of the life of two young boys growing up in the Mississippi area. The themes of childhood and nature recur in his masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885). In both these works Mark Twain shows his deep distrust of `respectable' society and his sympathy for social outcasts and the common man. He uses humour to criticise the practice of slavery and the hypocrisy and prejudices of his times. In his characterisations he displays a penetrating insight into human psychology. Mark Twain's use of language is also strikingly original. The stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are told from the point of view of the young protagonists and contain slang, regional dialect and illogical sentence constructions that make the dialogue come to life. As a writer Twain did not emulate European models; he created a distinctly Am lit style

18th cent., when Jamaica was a leading world sugar producer. Freed and escaped slaves, sometimes aided by the maroons (slaves who had escaped to remote areas after Spain lost 3 control of Jamaica), succeeded in organizing frequent uprisings against the European landowners. The sugar industry declined in the 19th cent., partly because of the abolition of slavery in 1833 (effective 1838) and partly because of the elimination in 1846 of the imperial preference tariff for colonial products entering the British market. Economic hardship was the prime motive behind the Morant Bay rebellion by freedmen in 1865. The British ruthlessly quelled the uprising and also forced the frightened legislature to surrender its powers; Jamaica became a crown colony. Poverty and economic decline led many blacks to seek temporary work in neighboring

Eestlaste sõjavarustus Muistses vabadusvõitluses

Muistse vabadusvõitluse lõpuks olid Eesti väed juba suhteliselt hästi relvastatud, kuid nagu näha, ei kinkinud see siiski neile vabadust. Summary There have been many wars on Earth that have changed the destiny of different countries. Estonia is no exception. During the years 1208-1227 there was a war between the joint forces of Estonian tribes and a Christian knights' order ,,Swordbrothers" that led the Estonians to a 500-year slavery. This was the first larger war on Estonians' territory. Estonians used different weapons and armor during that war. Simple weapons like war axes, maces, daggers and spears were smithed by Estonian blacksmiths, but more expensive and exotic weapons like swords, crossbows and most armor (an exception for the basic leather armor) were bought from Russian, Scandinavian or German merchants. Some weapons and most metal armor were taken looted from dead knights on the battlefields, so for

Factories meant more work for people but the conditions were inhuman. By the end of the 18th century Britain was the most industrialised country enjoying an international trade boom. During the late 18th century a huge network of canals and railways were built. Telegraph lines, magazines and newspapers became a part of every day. In the 1840s, when Britain was struck by famine, millions of citizens had to live in overcrowded tenements and their work regimes came close to slavery. canals and railroads. After the "wheat frontier" had passed through an area, more diversified farms including dairy cattle generally took its place. Warmer regions saw plantings of cotton and herds of beef cattle. In the early colonial south, raising tobacco and cotton was common, especially through the use of slave labour until the Civil War. In the northeast, slaves were used in agriculture until the early 19th century. In the Midwest, slavery was prohibited by the Freedom Ordinance of 1787. Nowadays less than 2% of the population is engaged in agriculture. Large stretches of level or gently rolling land, especially in the Midwest provide ideal conditions for large-scale agriculture. The farms have narrow specialization, are very well mechanized and have high productivity. Besides providing its own people with food, the US has sent much food to other countries.

During the 19th century many people went to live in the west

During the 17th and 18th century when slavery existed in the United States, house slaves were slaves who worked and often lived in the house of the slave-owner. They usually lived more comfortably than field slaves. A pejorative term house Negro/house Nigger was sometimes used in reference to the black slaves instead. The term comes from Malcolm X’s speech "Message to the Grass Roots" (1963). Massa refers to the colloquial black English pronunciation of master, used by black slaves when addressing the masters of the house they worked in

Summary of philosophy of right (õiguse filosoofia kokkuvõte)

Present man is: in conflict with fellow man; in a state of inequality; has a developing reason. To develop, it is necessary to move bact to the previous state, while keeping the virtues of the present. The man of the future will be: reasonable; equal; free; in sympathy with others. Montesquieu - The Spirit of the Laws In this political treatise Montesquieu advocates constitutionalism and the separation of powers, the abolition of slavery, the preservation of civil liberties and the rule of law, and the idea that political and legal institutions ought to reflect the social and geographical character of each particular community. Kant Idea for a universal History with a cosmopolitan purpose Kant was a Calvinist. Natural law preditermines every natural event. But history can not be predicted because men act chaotically.
