As the men's trucks rumble toward the front, they pass a house, and Paul hears the cackle of geese. He and Kat agree to come back later, take the geese, and feast on them. The sound of gunfire and shells fills the air, gripping the new recruits with fear. Kat explains to the recruits how to distinguish which guns are firing by listening to the blasts. He announces that he senses there will be a bombardment later in the night: the English batteries have begun firing an hour earlier than usual. Paul reflects that the roar of guns and whistling of shells sharpens men's senses. They are the petroleum gases. Depending on demand and the cost of recovery, these gases are either flared off, sold as liquified petroleum gas under pressure, or used to power the refinery's own burners. During the winter, butane (C4H10), is blended into the petrol pool at high rates, because its high vapor pressure assists with cold starts. Liquified under pressure slightly above atmospheric, it is best known for powering cigarette lighters, but it is also a main fuel source for many developing countries. Propane can be liquified under modest pressure, and is consumed for just about every application relying on petroleum for energy, from cooking to heating to transportation. The cycloalkanes, also known as naphthenes, are saturated hydrocarbons which have one or more carbon rings to which hydrogen atoms are attached according to the formula CnH2n. Cycloalkanes have similar properties to alkanes but have higher boiling points.
PISTON ACCELERATION Sadly, while there is no substitute for revs, there are plenty of barriers: piston speed is one, as was already noted. But that is a rather indirect limit, as it ignores the fact that it is not speed so much as all the starting and stopping of pistons that does the damage, or at least the worst of any damage. The acceleration forces generated by the starting and stopping are felt even in an engine's main bearings, but they are at a peak in the connecting rod and piston and have a particularly disastrous effect on the latter, as any attempt to make a piston stronger is apt also to make it heavier-which aggravates the very situation the strengthening of the piston should improve. Even so, an engine's true Achilles heel, the problem that may most strongly resist solution, often is the disastrous effects piston acceleration may have on the piston's rings.

Partici- pant observation is a research approach in which the researcher becomes a spy of sorts. With disguised identity and intent, the investigator infiltrates the setting of interest and becomes a full-fledged participant in the group to be studied. So when I wanted to learn about the compliance tactics of encyclopedia (or vacuum cleaner, or portrait photography, or dance lesson) sales organizations, I would answer a newspaper ad for sales trainees and have them teach me their methods. Using sim- ilar but not identical approaches, I was able to penetrate advertising, public rela- tions, and fund-raising agencies to examine their techniques. Much of the evidence presented in this book, then, comes from my experience posing as a compliance professional, or aspiring professional, in a large variety of organizations dedicated to getting us to say yes.
