would be like without electricity. Yet like air and water, we tend to take electricity for granted. Everyday, we use electricity to do many jobs for us -- from lighting and heating/cooling our homes, to powering our televisions and computers. Electricity is a controllable and convenient form of energy used in the applications of heat, light and power. 7.1 The science of electricity In order to understand how electric charge moves from one atom to another, we need to know something about atoms. Everything in the universe is made of atoms--every star, every tree, every animal. The human body is made of atoms. Air and water are, too. Atoms are the building blocks of the universe. Atoms are so small that millions of them would fit on the head of a pin. Atoms are made of even smaller particles. The center of an atom is called the nucleus. It is made of particles called protons and neutrons. The protons and neutrons are very small, but electrons are much, much smaller

patchy clouds, letting a sliver of night sky fall onto the caged mirror of the 200-inch (508- centimeter) Hale Telescope. Caltech astronomer Avishay Gal-Yam had two hours before the supernova would dip too low in the sky for the telescope to see it. Still more luminous than a billion suns, the supernova outshone the combined light from all the stars in its home galaxy, glowing white-hot from the radioactive decay of unstable nickel atoms forged in the explosion. Gal-Yam pointed to a computer screen showing a squiggly line--the glow broken down into its component colors, or wavelengths. Each dip in the line represented a wavelength of light absorbed by a different element--silicon, cobalt, calcium, iron--in the debris of the star. Destruction and creation were conjoined on the screen. The elements revealed there, like those from countless earlier supernovas, will eventually find their way into new stars and perhaps new

EXCITATION – An influence of one neurone on another which facilitates an action potential. EXCITATORY POSTSYNAPTIC POTENTIAL (EPSP) – A change in local potential occurring at the synapse which depolarizes the postsynaptic membrane and works towards producing an action potential in the postsynaptic cell. FOREBRAIN – The largest division of the brain which includes the cerebral cortex* and the basal ganglia*. It is implicated in the higher brain functions. FREE RADICALS – Atoms or groups of atoms with unpaired electron which display extraordinary activity in their interactions with matter. They have damaging effects on living cells and appear to be implicated in the mechanisms of neurodegeneration. FRONTAL LOBE – One of the four divisions (parietal, temporal, occipital) of each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex. It plays a role in controlling movement and associating the functions of other cortical areas. GABA – see GAMMA-AMINO BUTYRIC ACID

In reprocessing 95% of spent fuel can be recycled to be returned to usage in a power plant. What is nuclear energy? Nuclear energy was first discovered by French physicist Henri Becquerel in 1896, when he found that photographic plates stored in the dark near uranium were blackened like X-ray plates, which had been just recently discovered at the time 1895. It is energy released by the splitting (fission) or merging together (fusion) of the nuclei of atoms. The conversion of nuclear mass to energy is consistent with the mass-energy equivalence formula E = m.c², in which E = energy release, m = mass defect, and c = the speed of light in a vacuum. Nuclear chemistry can be used as a form of alchemy to turn lead into gold or change any atom to any other atom (albeit through many steps). Radionuclide (radioisotope) production often involves irradiation of another isotope (or more precisely a nuclide), with alpha particles, beta particles, or

commonly found molecules are alkanes (linear or branched), cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, or more complicated chemicals like asphaltenes. Each petroleum variety has a unique mix of molecules, which define its physical and chemical properties, like color and viscosity. The alkanes, also known as paraffins, are saturated hydrocarbons with straight or branched chains which contain only carbon and hydrogen and have the general formula CnH2n+2. They generally have from 5 to 40 carbon atoms per molecule, although trace amounts of shorter or longer molecules may be present in the mixture. The alkanes from pentane (C5H12) to octane (C8H18) are refined into petrol, the ones from nonane (C9H20) to hexadecane (C16H34) into diesel fuel, kerosene and jet fuel. Alkanes with more than 16 carbon atoms can be refined into fuel oil and lubricating oil. At the heavier end of the range, paraffin wax is an alkane with approximately 25 carbon

" Chemically speaking, an electrolyte is any substance that ionizes, i.e. gains or loses an electron or electrons, when dissolved in a solvent like water. A classic example is table salt, chemical formula NaCl, which dissociates into a positively charge sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions when dissolved in water. Water just so happens to be the most versatile solvent there is, a property it owes to the arrangement of its hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Without getting too into the details, every H2O molecule possesses a partial negative charge near its oxygen atom and partial positive charge near its hydrogen atoms. The polar nature of water's structure allows it to dissolve more substances than any liquid on Earth (which explains why it's known in chemistry circles as "the universal solvent"), including electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, magnesium, and hydrogen phosphate

There are a variety of technologies that have been developed to take advantage of solar energy. These include: Photovoltaic Systems Producing electricity directly from sunlight. Solar cells convert sunlight directly into electricity. Solar cells are often used to power calculators and watches. They are made of semiconducting materials similar to those used in computer chips. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. This process of converting light (photons) to electricity (voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect. Solar cells are typically combined into modules that hold about 40 cells; a number of these modules are mounted in PV arrays that can measure up to several meters on a side. These flat-plate PV arrays can be mounted at a fixed angle facing south, or they can be

Hendrik Antoon Lorentz (18 July 1853 4 February 1928) was a Dutch physicist who shared the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman for the discovery and theoretical explanation of the Zeeman effect. He also derived the transformation equations subsequently used by Albert Einstein to describe space and time. Lorentz theorized that the atoms might consist of charged particles and suggested that the oscillations of these charged particles were the source of light. When colleague and former student of Lorentz Pieter Zeeman discovered the Zeeman effect in 1896, Lorentz supplied its theoretical interpretation. The experimental and theoretical work was honored with the Nobel prize in physics in 1902. Lorentz' name is now associated with the Lorentz-Lorenz formula, the

It has been found that molecules are held together stably by means of the chemical bonds formed through the sharing of electrons between neighboring atoms. The explosive loss of an electron disrupts such bonds and converts a stable molecule into energy-rich radicals which, in their attempt to regain stable electronic configurations, may decompose several other molecules.1 Still, it is difficult to explain how an infinitesimally

Its discoveries shift development of science revolutionary, giving opportunity to make us all healthy and wealthy, ending myriad diseases and even old age. Nanotechnology is bottom-up: aggregating individual atoms and molecules to make a desired object. It is known as the fastest developing field, demanding billons dollars of investments into growth. The study was divided into three sections, in first part author explored the term of nanotechnology, patenting in Europe and United States, also approaching in patent law etc. Next sections analyzed the problems of patenting nanotechnology, mainly regarding research area originality and into practice reaching patent law bottlenecks
