Reasoning that flows from the general to the specific like this is deduction. A typical syllogism in the frequency analysis of an English monoalphabetic substitution would have as its major premise, "The most frequent letter in the cryptogram is probably the substitute for e," as its minor premise, "x is the most frequent letter in the cryptogram," and as its conclusion, "x is probably the substitute for e."
