In this case the threat could be explained as: "Give me a treat or I will play a trick on you." Children today usually do not play tricks if they do not get treats. However, some children still get up to mischief (pranks or things to make fun of people; like putting toilet paper in trees; writing on windows with soap or throwing eggs at peoples' houses). People sometimes dress up as ghosts, witches, goblins and other scary things for Halloween. A jack-o-lantern is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday of Halloween. The tradition of carving a lantern started in the British Isles however, it was traditionally carved out of a turnip. They were created on All Hallows' Eve and left on the door step to ward off evil spirits. An offering or, as we now know it, a "treat", would also be commonly left to placate roaming sprites and evil spirit. Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain

He was also the most celebrated sculptor of his time, and the second part of his career, in particular, demonstrated that Modernist sculpture was surprisingly adaptable to official needs. In this sense, Moore was the contemporary equivalent of the great Neo Classical sculptors such as Canova and Thorwaldsen. Moore was born in Castleford as the son of a mining engineer. He became well-known through his large-scale abstract cast bronze and carved marble sculptures, and was instrumental in introducing a particular form of modernism to the United Kingdom. His ability in later life to fulfill large-scale commissions made him exceptionally wealthy. Yet he lived frugally and most of the money he earned went towards supporting the Henry Moore Foundation, which continues to support education and promotion of the arts. His forms are usually abstractions of the human figure, typically depicting mother-and-child or lying figures

As a member of the Hanseatic League, Tallinn gained control of trade with the East by the so-called goods yard right. Fast development of trade and economic prosperity led to the need for new utility rooms in the Town Hall and its more dignified appearance. In 137174 the Town Hall acquired its full present-day length and ground floor volume. From that time the Town Hall has its oldest and rarest pieces of medieval woodcarving: benches in the Gothic style. The carved side posts of the bigger bench, featuring the story of Tristan and Isolde and Samson's fight with the lion, are some of the most beautiful examples of medieval art in Estonia. In 140204 the existing Town Hall was rebuilt into a two-storied building with festive halls, utility rooms and offices with the room layout defined by the foundations. A tower was put up at the east end. The projecting main floor was supported on an arcade, allowing the first-floor rooms to be built much more spacious

Members of the Brotherhood left Tallinn in the 1940s. The site of the House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads probably had a residential building on it from the 14th century. In the first half of the 16th century, the Blackheads bought it and built a new hall with an archless ceiling. The next serious rebuilding took place in 1597, when the facade was redesigned in the Dutch Renaissance architectural spirit, with a profusion of ornaments and carved decorations. One of Tallinn's most eyecatching doors, on the front of this building, dates to 1640. The twonaved and vaulted guild hall, bought from the Olav Guild, dates to the 15th century. The next renovation took place in 1908, but this time it only affected the interiors, which were given a neo classical appearance.

Books can also be borrowed from libraries. In 2010, Google estimated that there were approximately 130 million unique books in the world. Etymology The word book comes from Old English "bc" which itself comes from the Germanic root "*bk-", cognate to beech. Similarly, in Slavic languages (e.g. Russian, Bulgarian and Macedonian) "" (bukva--"letter") is cognate to "beech". It is thus conjectured that the earliest Indo-European writings may have been carved on beech wood. Similarly, the Latin word codex, meaning a book in the modern sense (bound and with separate leaves), originally meant "block of wood". On the eastern façade of the chapel is the cenotaph of a citizen merchant, composed like the sixteenth-century winged altarpieces. It is the work of two late-Gothic stonecarvers Clemens Pale and Hinric Brabender (nicknamed Bildensrieder). A skeleton with a toad on its chest and a serpent around its skull has been carved in the lower niche. According to Estonian folklore, Olev, the man who built the church, fell down and got killed when he was putting finishing touches to the spire. A toad and a serpent sprang out of his mouth. Olev was buried on the very spot where he died. A stone block with the carved figure of Olev, a toad and a serpent, was placed on his tomb. St Olaf's Church was a Roman Catholic one up to 1524. Tradition has it that they arrive on January 6th, the date the Wise Men gave gifts to Jesus. Shoes are filled with straw or barley for the tired camels that must carry their riders through the busy night. By morning the camel food is gone and in place of the straw or barley are presents. Shoes also may be placed on balconies on the night of the 6th January in the hope that the Wise Men will fill them with gifts. Most homes have a manger, like cathedrals and churches. These are complete with carved figures. During the weeks before Christmas, families gather around their manger to sing, whilst children play tambourines and dance. The Spanish especially honor the cow at Christmas because it is thought that when Mary gave birth to Jesus the cow in the stable breathed on the Baby Jesus to keep him warm. Christmas is a deeply religious holiday in Spain. The country's patron saint is the Virgin Mary and the Christmas season officially begins December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception

known in English history as the Danes, the Norwegians invaded Ireland & Scotland. The Danes were of the same Germanic race as the Anglo-Saxons, but they still lived in tribes, were pagans. The Danes were well armed with long swords, spears, daggers, axes, bows, iron helmets & chain armour. Their ships were sailing-boats, but they were also provided wiht oars. The sails were often red & blue & green. At the prow of the ship there was usually a carved dragon's head which rose high out of the water. The Danes were bold & skilful seamen. The word ,,Vikings" probably means ,,pirates" or ,,the people of the sea inlets". At first they only raided & plundered. Came in spring & summer, burnt churches and monasteries, loaded their ships and returned home. London itself was raided in 851. The Danes were successful, because the Anglo-Saxons had neither a regular army nor a fleet, no coastguards, so the raiders could appear unexpectedly

In about 1230, quite a number of German merchants came over to Tallinn from Gotland at the invitation of the Order. They settled down outside the fortress, at the foot of the hill. They erected a chapel among their wooden houses. The church was built against the northern wall of the chapel

In some parts of Australia the tribes called the places where initiation ceremonies were held, bora grounds. They were called Buna grounds in other parts of the country, but the sites were not randomly chosen and were used for thousands of years by the tribe. The bora ground itself was identified by two circles that were drawn on the ground or were formed by rocks or pebbles. The circles were connected by a path and other symbols were drawn into the earth or carved into trees near the grounds. These symbols were highly significant in ceremonies and also warned people (women and uninitiated youths and strangers), to stay away from the area. The people also believed that a person's spirit could visit living people to harm or warn them of danger. This usually resulted in a 'inquiry' about the death of a person who was considered to have died prematurely or in unusual circumstances. The inquiry - usually undertaken in consultation with an

from Chinese-American leaders. But what struck me most was what one of the protesters said. In most American nuclear laboratories, in fact in most research laboratories, Mandarin seems to be the official language of communication. What in effect this means is that Chinese-Americans have so outnumbered Americans themselves in these research facilities that it becomes more convenient for everybody to speak Mandarin. Chinese Americans understand that knowledge is power. They have carved a niche for themselves where they can exercise power – in the highly classified field of nuclear warheads and missiles. Unfortunately we, as a people, have not carved out any niche in any part of America industry or life, except maybe in being very religious. I am not certain that being very religious is carving out a niche for a group of people. I am not here advocating that a Capitalist Nigger should steal military secrets. What I am advocating is

This script was the ancestor of the `Times New Roman' font we find on our computer screens today. Another feature familiar to computer users is `italics'. Initially, characters written by hand resembled the carved letters, but gradually scholars began to change the form of their writing, slanting letters and connecting them. The credit for inventing Roman script using capitals and small letters goes to Aldus Manutius of Venice, in 1495 AD. The old Roman capitals and Greek letter forms were thus transformed into the twenty- six alphabet letters that we know today, with both upper and lower-case letters in common use by the end of the sixteenth century.

"It was very... hard -- you can't imagine how hard -- for me to simply take you away, and leave them... alive." His voice was muffled by his arm. "I could have let you go with Jessica and Angela, but I was afraid if you left me alone, I would go looking for them," he admitted in a whisper. I sat quietly, dazed, my thoughts incoherent. My hands were folded in my lap, and I was leaning weakly against the back of the seat. He still had his face in his hand, and he was as still as if he'd been carved from the stone his skin resembled. Finally he looked up, his eyes seeking mine, full of his own questions. "Are you ready to go home?" he asked. "I'm ready to leave," I qualified, overly grateful that we had the hour-long ride home together. I wasn't ready to say goodbye to him. The waitress appeared as if she'd been called. Or watching. "How are we doing?" she asked Edward. "We're ready for the check, thank you." His voice was quiet, rougher, still reflecting the strain of our conversation

the king said to him, “I want to be like you. Can you give me something that will bring balance, serenity, and wisdom into my life? I will pay any price you ask.” The wise man said, “I may be able to help you. But the price is so great that your entire kingdom would not be sufficient payment for it. Therefore it will be a gift to you if you will honor it.” The king gave his assurances, and the wise man left. A few weeks later, he returned and handed the king an ornate box carved in jade. The king opened the box and found a simple gold ring inside. Some letters were inscribed on the ring. The inscription read: This, too, will pass. “What is the meaning of this?” asked the king. The wise man said, “Wear this ring always. Whatever happens, before you call it good or bad, touch this ring and read the inscription. that way, you will always be at peace.” This, too, will pass. What is it about these simple words that makes them so powerful

thousands of lives." That, however, is another story. 3. The First 3,000 Years ON A DAY nearly 4,000 years ago, in a town called Menet Khufu bordering the thin ribbon of the Nile, a master scribe sketched out the hieroglyphs that told the story of his lord's life—and in so doing he opened the recorded history of cryptology. His was not a system of secret writing as the modern world knows it; he used no fully developed code of hieroglyphic symbol substitutions. His inscription, carved about 1900 B.C. into the living rock in the main chamber of the tomb of the nobleman Khnumhotep II, merely uses some unusual hieroglyphic symbols here and there in place of the more ordinary ones. Most occur in the last 20 columns of the inscription's 222, in a section recording the monuments that Khnumhotep had erected in the service of the pharaoh Amenemhet II. The intention was not to make it hard to read the text. It was to

Mr. Collins attending them to point out its beauties, and Lady Catherine kindly informing them that it was much better worth looking at in the summer. The dinner was exceedingly handsome, and there were all the servants and all the articles of plate which Mr. Collins had promised; and, as he had likewise foretold, he took his seat at the bottom of the table, by her ladyship's desire, and looked as if he felt that life could furnish nothing greater. He carved, and ate, and praised with delighted alacrity; and every dish was commended, first by him and then by Sir William, who was now enough recovered to echo whatever his son-in-law said, in a manner which Elizabeth wondered Lady Catherine could bear. But Lady Catherine seemed gratified by their excessive admiration, and gave most gracious smiles, especially when any dish on the table proved a novelty to them. The party did not supply much conversation. Elizabeth was ready to speak

prevent it. If the wish is not expressed by one of the characters, it may be implied by the character's dire situation. Audience members making strong identification with a character in trouble will make the wish themselves, desiring the hero to be happy, triumphant, or free, and getting themselves in alignment with the forces polarizing the story. Spoken or not, the story hears the wish, seemingly attracted by the intense emotion contained in it. Carl Jung had a motto carved above his door, "Vocatus atque non vocatus, deus aderit," which loosely translated means "Summoned or not, 304 STORIES A R E ALIVE the god will come." In other words, when the emotional conditions are right, when the need is great, there is an inner cry for change, a spoken or unspoken wish that calls the story and the adventure into being.
